Immediately after John Lennon’s death in 1980, reporters swarmed Paul McCartney for his reaction. The two were not only bandmates, but also lifelong friends. In his shock over the New York City shooting, Paul’s response was unexpected. In a famous clip scrutinized by fans, he said, “[It’s a] drag, isn’t it?”

A new documentary on Paul includes comments by John’s son, Sean. The film, Man on the Run, depicts Paul’s career, including his time as a Beatle and creating Wings, the band with then wife Linda.

Sean opened up in the new documentary, saying Paul’s reaction was not unexpected. “I always notice the look in his eyes and the tone of his voice. Really felt like someone who was unable to process what was going on,” he said. “He just seemed almost robotic, which I think some people took possibly as coldness, but I never took it as that, ‘cause I understood even then what it was like when something that terrible happens.”

Paul said that he was “very shocked” to hear about John’s death in an interview at that time. He had heard the “terrible news” by phone that morning and had not decided if he would attend the funeral.

Sean clarifies Paul and John’s bond in the documentary, saying his father listened to Paul’s McCartney album often. “When the Beatles broke up, he had to grow up, but in a way I feel like my dad passing was probably the real growing up moment,” he says. “They had a once-in-a-millennium chemistry that I don’t think we’re likely to see again.”

Stella, Paul and Linda’s daughter, confirms her father’s emotional state following John’s death. “I remember some, the biggest reaction I’d ever seen and him leaving the kitchen and going outside,” she says in the documentary. “That was heartbreaking, like truly heartbreaking.”

Man on the Run includes past interviews with John, Linda and many others. It debuts in theaters February 19 and 22, before heading to Prime Video on February 27.
