Ashton Kutcher claims his good looks have previously worked against him in Hollywood. The actor recently admitted that his appearance limited the types of roles he was considered for over the years, especially those involving serious roles.
Ashton Kutcher talks about his looks affecting his acting career
During a New York Comic Con panel for his upcoming series The Beauty, Kutcher opened up about how his looks have shaped his acting journey. “I think every role you get, part of it is what you look like, right? It’s a very big part of what you’re imbuing as the character,” the 47-year-old actor said. “And so, there are roles that I’ve gotten because of the way I look. And there are roles that I haven’t gotten because of the way I look.”
Kutcher admitted the experience has been “frustrating” at times, especially when he missed out on “down-on-your-luck” or gritty roles. Still, he acknowledged that casting choices are often visual. “You’re trying to tell a story with pictures. And the pictures need to create a feeling for the audience,” he explained.
The actor, best known for That ’70s Show and The Butterfly Effect, said that over the years he’s come to understand how appearance plays into storytelling but The Beauty gave him a chance to break that mold.
Kutcher said his role in The Beauty gave him the chance to take on something “complex” and “nuanced.” The Hulu series explores themes of beauty, power, and perception. “Without giving away too much, almost every one of us has an incredibly nuanced role where, in some way, shape or form, we’re playing something that we are or we aren’t at any given time,” he said.
Kutcher also touched on The Beauty’s central theme aka society’s obsession with appearance and the double standards around cosmetic enhancement. “Why is it okay to make our teeth better but not our face better, or our nose better?” (via People)
The Beauty will premiere on Hulu in 2026.
