Below Deck Recap: Worst First Day Ever

How many terrible groups of charter guests does it take to make not one, but two crew members cry? This week on Below Deck, the answer is just one. You guys! I cannot reiterate enough what monsters these guests are. And it’s only the first charter of the season! We’ve barely left the dock and chaos has completely taken over My Seanna. And I blame it almost entirely on Charley Walters and his band of vile friends. Well, if you can even call them “friends.” But let’s not ahead of ourselves.

Need I remind you, this is also the third time Bravo has let Charley onto this show. Two seasons ago, he and his gaggle of mean girl gays were the ones who forced Josiah Carter into a gold speedo. And reminded him of the gay bullies who terrorized him after he came out. Which, let me tell you, is sadly all too real in the hateful world of gay-on-gay social circles. (They also got chewed out by Captain Lee Rosbach that season for dangerously operating the jet skis without a kill switch, and putting their lives in danger.)

And yet, this season is easily Charley and the gang’s worst showing yet. It honestly makes me wonder. Do they think they’re coming across well? Likable? Like anything other than superficial, bratty demanding, demogorgons who deserve to be tossed overboard and committed back to the deep? It’s just gross behavior. And at this point, in 2020, being a pack of pretentious snobs whose behavior sends anyone in the service industry into tears is just…not a good look. Like, at all. Read the room, Charley.

Already one man down, the crew is responsible for pulling out an around-the-world themed dinner. The guests want different international cuisines for each course. They want a unique, exotic cocktail paired with each. Oh, and they also want their luggage unpacked at the same time. Which naturally sends the entire interior into complete disarray. Francesca Rubi is immediately pulled in opposite directions, serving dinner, overseeing cabin turn-downs and pushing Izzy Wouters to work faster than a literal snail’s pace.

Meanwhile, it’s the first day and Izzy is already over being a stewardess. Apparently, the third stew has worked both interior and exterior before, and would much rather be lugging ropes as a deckhand. Seeing an opportunity, she goes right over Francesca‘s head and straight to Captain Lee to pitch herself as a potential deckhand. That way, he would just have to find a new stew and she’d bring more experience to Eddie Lucas‘ deck team than, say, sweet Shane Coopersmith.

With Francesca and her geisha kimono running a million different directions, dinner service goes…not smoothly. In fact, it goes terribly. Like, I’ve maybe never seen a worse dinner service in the history of Below Deck. And it’s certainly not Rachel Hargrove‘s fault. Nor is it Elizabeth Frankini‘s, who’s whipping up perfect cocktail after cocktail with Shane‘s help.

But with the chief stew down in the cabins, it’s taking forever for each course to be served. Eddie has to request service over the radio multiple times. The food is coming out cold. The terrible guests are getting cranky. And Francesca is finally pushed to her limit when Charley and his pal start bringing their own plates to the galley.

By the end of the night, the guests are patronizingly dissatisfied and Francesca gets called to the bridge for a little chat with Captain Lee. And trust me, you never want to get called to the bridge on the first night. Still in her kimono, the chief stew promptly breaks down in tears, sobbing uncontrollably. Captain Lee is understandably baffled by this brazen display of emotion. As he says, “There’s no crying in yachting!” But like the ever-wise leader he is, the captain kindly talks Francesca down from the ledge. He supports her. He’s kind. He urges her to get some sleep and try again in the morning. These are the moments that remind me that Captain Lee is the leader I would always want on my team.

The next day is a chance at a new start, and everyone is feeling better with some sleep. Well, everyone beside Captain Lee, whose ribs are still killing him. However, day two just means it’s someone else’s turn to cry. And this time it’s Rachel. After literally the most complicated breakfast order known to mankind, the chef realizes she doesn’t have the kitchen space she needs to make the 20,000 different kinds of omelettes the guests have requested.

Service is once again slow, this time on the galley end, and the guests are quick to express their dissatisfaction. As omelettes start getting sent back with mistakes, Rachel begins hyperventilating — the next crew member to be pushed to the brink by this god-awful group.

It’s now up to the deck crew to turn the day around. And the best solution for everyone? Get these guests off the boat. Eddie quickly organizes a beach day, and even plays into the guests’ collective infatuation with James Hough by using the deckhand as a personal jet ski chauffeur. At the beach, Izzy also seizes the moment to pitch Eddie on switching to the deck department. She even gets an impromptu interview when the tender starts floating away and she leaps into action to anchor it ashore. Eddie’s so impressed that he promises to put in a good word with Captain Lee. At the very least, he thinks, the stew has more sense of urgency than Sunshine Shane.

Oh sweet, sweet Shane. Speaking of Shane, the junior deckhand sees everyone else heading to the beach as the perfect opportunity to relax and go for a swim. Naturally, he changes into board shorts, discards his shirt and hops into the water like the California dreamboat he is. However, what he doesn’t realize is that Captain Lee is keeping a watchful eye on the bridge.

And the captain is not impressed, especially when Shane isn’t answering Eddie‘s radio calls from shore. The green deckhand is swiftly reprimanded, and he’ll probably think twice the next time he wants to remove his My Seanna rash guard.

For dinner, the guests have requested a Neon Carnival-themed party to celebrate one of their birthdays. (Honestly, I can’t keep track of which girl’s birthday it is, and does it even really matter?) Their one request — on top of the dozens of others — is that James serve as eye candy for dessert, dressed in a sparkly speedo. Oh, and they also want to do body shots off him. Because that’s not crossing a line at all. But the handsome Brit is all for it, especially if it helps the crew get a better tip.

So without much fuss, James dons the disco ball-inspired budgie snuggler and paints a giant 35 on his chest. But before Rachel can bring the cake and surprise in a speedo out, the guests start a massive argument. Over what else? Their respective crushes on James.

One of the guests is furious at the birthday girl for getting attention from the deckhand earlier in the day via jet ski. She’s especially mad because she claims she basically called dibs on him the moment they stepped on the boat. And suddenly, the guests are all leaving the table, screaming at each other and stomping off in a huff. It takes major wrangling from Francesca to get them to all sit back down. Because, she promises, the birthday surprise will be worth it.

James finally appears and most of the guests melt at the sight of the thirst trap in a sparkling speedo. The lights go out. The neon carnival begins. Body shots are done, off of James, in the darkness. Everyone seems happy except for the guest who had the first crush on James. She sees the deckhand in a speedo as further evidence of the injustice done against her by the birthday girl. Because if the deck crew are there for anything at all, it’s to be boy toys for thirsty, entitled charter guests, right??

Eboni K. Williams Says Race Is “Absolutely Discussed” On Real Housewives Of New York; Says “It’s Unavoidable”

In October, Eboni K. Williams was announced as the first Black co-star on Real Housewives of New York. Former RHONY star Bethenny Frankel has said that she suggested several African American women’s names to join the show.

Leah McSweeney, who is going into her sophomore season, is a long-time supporter of the Black Lives Matter Movement. She also spoke out hoping to bring some racial diversity to the show.

People reported that Eboni discussed how race will be part of RHONY during an interview with SiriusXM’s Bevy Smith on Bevelations.

Eboni stated, “Race is absolutely discussed, I think in responsible, but very authentic ways on this season. It’s already happening. I can tell you that much.”

The cast is still filming the season. “I believe it will continue to happen because it’s what you said — it’s unavoidable,” Eboni added.

The television host and attorney continued, “I’m not one to bite my tongue or ignore the big elephant in the room. When it’s brought to me to discuss, you know, as we say in the South, I cut no cards.” Season 13 is beginning to sound like it tackles some actual issues besides drinking to excess and naked tiki-torch throwing.

“But listen, I’m also not the preachy type. I’m not here to lecture you. I have two full-time jobs–one is not to be a professor to white women about Black America, ’cause that doesn’t pay,” Eboni remarked. “However, what I am is a human, and somebody that thinks that God has blessed me with a particular temperament and skillset to engage in these dialogues, responsibly and authentically.”

So, why did Eboni decide to become part of the New York Housewives? “People know me as a lawyer, people know me as a journalist, people know me as a broadcaster,” she explained.

“People don’t know my heart. People don’t know me as a friend,” Eboni said. She added, “People don’t know me as a lover. And I’m excited to share that.” It sounds as if Eboni will be very open about her life, which is important as a Housewife.

“So, I’m open hearted with these ladies, too. I’m not going to take no bulls—- and I’m not going to play with them,” Eboni said. “But listen, when they show me they want to grow, I’m open and so excited to support them in their growth.”

But Eboni has a special bond with one particular co-star–Leah. They are the two youngest RHONY cast members, but they also have a lot in common.

Eboni shared, “I call Leah Black-adjacent–she’s adjacent to the culture.” Eboni also appreciates how Leah is able to be herself.

“Leah is exactly who she is, she’s unapologetic about who she is,” Eboni commented. “She acknowledges how the culture –our culture– has influenced her career and her aesthetic and her lens and she pays homage. She’s not trying to be a Black girl and I really, really love that about Leah,” the newbie Housewife added.

Time will tell how well Eboni gels with her RHONY co-stars Sonja Morgan, Ramona Singer, and Luann de Lesseps.

Candiace Dillard Wished Death On A Blogger Who Recently Died Knowing He Suffered With Medical Issues

We’re all pretty familiar with the very basic rules of human nature. One of the first things we learn is not to put our hands on people. Most of us are also told early on to watch what we say. Because in some areas if you are going to talk that talk, please be prepared to walk that walk. That seems to be the overall lesson on this season of Real Housewives of Potomac.

Candiace Dillard was involved in a physical fight with Monique Samuels. Candiace has a mouth on her and uses it frequently. Despite having a run in with her mother’s purse, and Monique’s hands, Candiace seems mostly unafraid to talk that talk. No one will dispute that violence is never the answer, but words are a weapon all on their own. In August, Candiace had some words for blogger, Khyle Paylor, who seemingly sided with Monique in the dispute. Candiace insulted the man physically and wished death on him as well. Sadly, Khyle has passed away. Candiace must have been absent the day we were learning to watch what we say.

Obviously no one in their right mind thinks Candiace wished death on someone and they perished as a result. If that were the case, I would be on Candiace’s doorstep asking her to wish me into a vacation. But exactly what are Candiace’s damn boundaries? Unfortunately for Candiace’s often spiteful tongue, some things can’t be erased with an apology. Not that she’s into apologizing.

Mother Dorothy might want to keep that purse handy. We get it, Candiace is an emotional entity, but she needs to start checking herself. Just because someone does not agree with her doesn’t mean she needs to disparage a person’s physique and wish death on them. Repeatedly. But that’s what happened when DMV (DC, Maryland, VA) area blogger Khyle chose #teammonique.

In an especially sad twist of fate, the gentleman at the core of Candiace’s disdain has died. According to All About The Tea, Khyle passed on November 4. In August of this year, Candiace posted what amounts to be an incredibly juvenile but vitriolic clip about Khyle. The Instagram video, shared by OnThisDayEntertainment included Candiace calling Khyle an “obese piece of shit who needs to drop dead” among other horrible things. Also, describing Candiace’s words as “horrible” is being incredibly generous.

Apparently, Candiace “had intimate knowledge of Kyle’s medical condition and knew he was on dialysis and suffered with health issues. ”

Candiace’s failure to prevent herself from engaging in malicious words has already gotten her in trouble. If you argue that physical fighting is wrong, please feel free to include that emotional abuse is also a thing. Fat shaming someone, going off script and attacking health issues, wishing someone dead – that steps into emotional abuse territory, whether it’s acknowledged or not.

Candiace should realize not everything that pops in her head should come out of her mouth. Anger is a valid emotion. However, making a video publicly humiliating someone and wishing them dead is an INCREDIBLY bad look. Candiace can ovary up and apologize to Monique. Or Ashley Darby. Or even her mother. But she can’t take back the poor display against Khyle. Maybe this will be the one thing that helps Candiace to watch her words, because next time Karma might not be so forgiving.

Blind Item: A Real Housewives Star’s Husband Is Cheating On Her With A Fan

Real Housewives viewers have seen the demise of many marriages play out on screen. Ramona Singer’s ex-husband Mario Singer cheated on her. There was some cheating in Luann de Lesseps‘ marriages… both of them.

Teresa Giudice and Joe Giudice couldn’t get past their legal issues and cheating allegations. Now, there’s apparently a new cheating scandal brewing with one of the other Real Housewives husbands.

The website Crazy Days and Nights teased, “The husband of this northeast Housewife has been cheating on her the past few months with a fan he met at a restaurant.”

Let’s narrow this down. “Northeast” means we are talking about Real Housewives of New York, Real Housewives of New Jersey, or Real Housewives of Potomac. Since none of the New York Housewives are married, that removes them from the list of possibilities.

In Potomac, Ashley Darby, Karen Huger, Candiace Dillard, Wendy Osefo, and Monique Samuels have husbands.

We all know that Michael Darby has a super sketchy history, so that’s the obvious guess here. But, I just want to know who’s watching Real Housewives of Potomac, thinking to themselves “I want to get with Michael.” Then again, there’s someone for everyone, right?

Considering how shocking it was (to me, anyway) when Erika Jayne was revealed as the West Coast Housewife who was secretly separated, I have no idea who to guess for this one.

Austen Kroll Was “Sick And Tired Of” Kathryn Dennis Pretending She Didn’t Drink; Happy She’s Honest About Drinking On Southern Charm This Season

During the first episode of Southern Charm Season 7, Craig Conover was shocked when Kathryn Dennis ordered a rum and coke. She hasn’t had an alcoholic beverage (on camera) for a few seasons.

In the trailer for this season, Kathryn even mockingly jokes about people saying “She’s off the wagon” in regard to her own behavior. However, Austen Kroll says Kathryn has been drinking for a while and she just didn’t let people know.

Austen told Us Weekly, “I am so sick and tired of this, like, you know, ‘I don’t drink’ narrative.” He added that he was so over “people trying to cover it up” by hiding her drinking on the show.

“As soon as, like, you know, she came out of the gates and she was like, ‘I’m drinking again,’ I was, like, ‘Yes.’ You know, like, ‘Good,’” Austen said.

Austen added, “I don’t care to talk about this with someone, you know, off-camera. So, I think that she, you know, faced [it] kind of head-on and what that does is it prevents other people from talking about it, you know, behind [your] back.”

Austen thinks it’s a good thing that Kathryn is being honest about her behavior. He hopes “it doesn’t turn out to be a problem” and “from what I know, it’s not, but you know, I mean, own it.”

Someone hiding their true behavior on a reality show? I’ve never seen that before. Cue, my eye roll.

Patricia Altschul Denies That Madison LeCroy Used Austen To Get On Southern Charm; Austen Claps Back

Last season, Southern Charm fans met Madison LeCroy, Austen Kroll’s on-again-off-again girlfriend who had blowout fights with him, following that failed threesome video.

We also saw her relationship with Southern Charm matriarch, Patricia Altschul. Madison is her hair stylist. Madison’s constant drama with Austen and her feud with Shep Rose helped her go from Austen’s sometimes-girlfriend to an actual Southern Charm cast member. Now, some fans are wondering if that’s a coincidence. Did Madison use Austen to become a reality TV star?

Comments By Bravo shared a screenshot of a very interesting conversation that started with a fan. Then Patricia jumped in and Austen finished it up.

One Southern Charm viewer commented, “Cannot stand Madison. Used Austen to get [on] the show… Period!!!”

That’s when Patricia chimed in to say that’s “not true.” She claimed, “I tried for years to get her on. She was at many #southerncharm events invited by me.” There could be something to that. Patricia’s son Whitney Sudler-Smith created Southern Charm and he’s a producer, so, perhaps, Patricia does have some major pull in regard to casting.

“and ultimately on the show because of whom,” Austen asked in response to Patricia’s claims. That’s when Patricia said Madison joined “because I convinced her.”

Austen replied, “I’m legitimately laughing out loud thinking about this conversation. ‘Come on the show and wash my hair, I swear it’ll be different than Thomas [Ravenel], and Landon [Clements] and Cooper [Ray] and Kathryn [Dennis] and Ashley [Jacobs]!'”

I’ll connect the dots with you on that one. Everyone Austen listed had a close relationship with Patricia at some point and now they don’t. He’s seemingly implying that Madison could join that list if she’s not careful.
