A planned makeover of a historic Washington, D.C., golf course has become a legal battle over presidential authority, environmental protection, and preservation. Donald Trump has now announced a firm construction date, even as a federal judge has restricted work at the site and demanded clarity from his administration.
Donald Trump announces date for DC golf course renovation
Donald Trump said on Truth Social that renovations at East Potomac Golf Links would begin Nov. 15, with the course expected to reopen in about 15 months. He had previously indicated that work would start in September. In a subsequent post, he said the Interior Department, which oversees the property, was enthusiastic about the plans.
The project forms part of Trump’s broader effort to reshape Washington landmarks and White House surroundings. However, the announcement comes amid litigation over whether the administration can proceed without satisfying legal requirements.
U.S. District Judge Ana Reyes previously ruled that the government must notify the court before undertaking substantive construction at the golf course. Last week, she also ordered officials to stop removing trees, describing the earlier action as “inexcusable” (via Reuters).
The legal battle took another turn when crews cut down roughly 500 trees on Oct. 10. The administration defended the work as a public safety measure and said it would bring the golf course back to its original layout under a 2019 plan, developed before Trump pursued his own renovation plans.
Trump’s announcement of a November schedule prompted Reyes to question the administration’s legal position. Reyes wanted officials to clarify how the new timeline squared with their earlier claim that “no final agency action” had taken place. In a court filing, Associate Attorney General Stanley Woodward argued that changing the golf course’s design did not meet the legal definition of an agency action.
The legal challenge began in February, when the DC Preservation League went to court to block the takeover, warning that the project could breach environmental protections and threaten a historically significant site. The administration pushed back on Oct. 9, asking the court to throw out the case on the grounds that the plans remained at an “early, conceptual stage.”
