Attendees at President Donald Trump’s Great American State Fair told NBC News politics hasn’t overshadowed the celebration. The 16-day event on the National Mall commemorates America’s 250th anniversary. Trump kicked off the fair on Thursday after musical acts dropped out over partisanship concerns.

The fair features food and culture booths from all 56 states and territories. The federal government agency displays several blocks of the Mall in temporary halls. A massive Ferris wheel and a scaled-down replica of Trump’s planned triumphal arch anchor the site.

“It’s kind of neat, because here it’s just been all about America,” said Pamela L., 59, from Virginia Beach. She added that “people are just being people, enjoying” the event. Nicole Briggs, 52, from Virginia, called it “a once-in-a-lifetime event for our generation.”

Daniela Guerrero, 25, a local resident, initially expected Republican-tinged programming at the fair. “It, I think, has been very much nonpartisan,” she said afterward. Her friend Grace Guber, 27, had similarly anticipated “a MAGA rally” before attending.

Freedom 250, a public-private partnership, organized the event separately from the congressionally created America250. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy delivered a partisan speech at the opening ceremony Thursday night. He derided departed musical acts, calling them “libtards that canceled on us.”

Several states declined to send delegations, citing financial burdens and partisanship concerns. Oregon Governor Tina Kotek specifically cited concerns about the event becoming “a more partisan affair,” to the Salem Statesman Journal. At least six states led by Democratic governors opted out of participation.

Lynn Frank, 52, from North Carolina, expressed disappointment over her state’s absence from the fair. “A state fair shouldn’t be political,” she said after her Democratic governor declined participation.

London Mayor Jokes Donald Trump Has a ‘Crush’ on Him Amid Feud

London’s Mayor, Sir Sadiq Khan, quipped that Donald Trump has a crush on him. The US president had called him “grossly incompetent” just days before. Speaking at the launch of his Heat Ready London plan at Islington Fire Station on Thursday, Khan brushed off Trump’s harsh words with a quip.

“I’m not sure why I’m living rent-free inside President Trump’s head,” London’s Mayor told reporters at the event (via BBC). “I’m not quite clear why this man appears to have a crush on me,” Sir Sadiq Khan added. He went further, offering a tongue-in-cheek explanation for Trump’s fixation, saying, “It could be because I’m the mayor of a progressive, multicultural, liberal, successful city.

Khan also pointed to London’s recent international recognition, noting that the city had won the Lee Kuan Yew award for urban planning last week, and suggested that achievement may be the real source of Donald Trump’s irritation.

Trump had made his remarks at the White House on Wednesday, telling reporters that Khan was a “bad person” and a “horrible representative” for the United Kingdom.

The two have clashed repeatedly over the years. Their feud stretches back to 2015, when Khan publicly condemned Trump’s call to ban Muslims from traveling to the United States. After Khan was elected Mayor in 2016, he described Trump’s views on Islam as “ignorant.” Tensions flared again after the 2017 London Bridge terror attack, when Trump mischaracterized Khan’s public safety statement on social media.

The “crush” language from Khan draws an ironic parallel to Trump’s own peculiar diplomatic vocabulary. Recently, the US President described his relationship with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El Sisi in similarly emotional terms. During the G7 summit in France, Trump recounted their first meeting ahead of the 2016 election. “I met him… and we fell in love. Deeply in love,” Trump said. He added that they had “great chemistry,” and the meeting ran over time.
