U.S. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche addressed one of the most pressing questions surrounding Saturday night’s shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner. Specifically, the senior official revealed that Donald Trump was likely the gunman’s target when he opened fire at a Washington Hilton checkpoint.

U.S. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche stated on Sunday that President Donald Trump and administration officials were likely targets of a suspect who fired on a security agent at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, Reuters reported. The man discharged a shotgun at a Secret Service agent at a Washington Hilton hotel checkpoint before being tackled and arrested.

“It does appear that he, he did, in fact, set out to target folks that work in the administration, likely including the president,” Blanche told NBC News. Blanche added that the suspect likely traveled by train from Los Angeles to Chicago and then to Washington.

The suspect faces federal charges on Monday for assaulting a federal officer, discharging a firearm, and attempted murder. A law enforcement official identified the suspect as Cole Tomas Allen, a California resident around 31 years old. Social media postings suggested he was a teacher in Torrance, near Los Angeles.

Washington interim Police Chief Jeffery Carroll confirmed the suspect carried a shotgun, a handgun, and multiple knives. Carroll said authorities took him to a local hospital for evaluation, and preliminary information indicated he was a hotel guest. Trump told reporters officials believe the gunman acted as a “lone wolf.”

The Secret Service agent’s bulletproof vest saved his life, and Trump confirmed the officer was in “good shape.” Secret Service spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi confirmed the officer’s release from the hospital. Security personnel rushed Trump and first lady Melania Trump from the dinner around 8:35 p.m. NATO leader Mark Rutte called it an attack “on our free and open societies.”

The venue previously witnessed an attempt on President Ronald Reagan’s life, when a would-be assassin shot and wounded him outside the hotel in 1981.

On April 23, Stephen Colbert declared that he would sit down with Barack Obama on May 5, just days before “The Late Show” comes to an end.  

“Folks, before we get started, I have a quick but exciting announcement,” Colbert revealed while sitting behind his desk at New York’s Ed Sullivan Theater. “Tuesday, May 5, here on The Late Show, in his first interview from the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago, I will be sitting down with former President Barack Obama.”

The Obama Foundation’s official Instagram account corroborated Colbert’s announcement with a precise and effective comment, writing, “Couch booked. Volume up. Ready to go.”

Notably, Stephen Colbert has conducted several interviews with Barack Obama. The upcoming sit-down will be their last interaction on the CBS platform. During the television host’s time at Comedy Central, where he headlined The Colbert Report, Obama made a total of three guest appearances on the show.

Since Colbert’s switch to CBS, the Democrat politician has appeared on “The Late Show” twice. Obama first agreed to appear on the CBS program in 2016, just months before his second presidential term ended.

As regulatory scrutiny of major digital platforms intensifies across Europe, one proceeding drew outsized attention, not for what transpired inside the room, but for who wasn’t there. Reports suggest that Elon Musk reportedly did not appear before French authorities in connection with an ongoing inquiry into content on X(formerly Twitter).

Authorities in France, conducting the probe into X (formerly Twitter), issued a summons for Elon Musk to appear for a voluntary interview in Paris. However, according to reports late Monday, he was not present when the meeting convened.

French prosecutors launched the X probe in January 2025 over claims its algorithm interfered in French politics. It was later widened to cover Grok’s role in spreading Holocaust denial and creating non-consensual sexual deepfakes from images of women and some children posted on X. The case led to a wave of regulatory and legal measures targeting X and xAI in the UK, EU, and globally.

In February, the Paris prosecutor’s cybercrime unit raided the company’s offices over suspected criminal offenses tied to content on the platform. French authorities set April 20 as the date for Musk’s interview as part of an investigation they first launched in 2025.

In a statement issued to the BBC on Monday, the Paris prosecutor’s office stated that it had “taken note of the absence of the people summoned.” They further noted that the absence of those summoned does not prevent the investigation from moving forward.

Meanwhile, when the BBC requested comment earlier Monday, X directed reporters to a February post from Musk that described the probe as a “political attack.”

However, the billionaire’s absence from Monday’s interview in Paris is not the first instance of him appearing to disregard authorities. Musk previously failed to appear for a court-ordered hearing in Los Angeles in September 2024, tied to a US Securities and Exchange Commission investigation into his acquisition of X.
