Survivor: Island Of The Idols Episode 8 & 9 Recap: Much, Much More Than A Vote

Survivor: Island of the Idols Episode 7 and 8 Recap: Much, Much More Than A Vote

Well wow. What an incredible, emotional and – a word I don’t use lightly – important two-hours of Reality TV, the likes of which only a show such as Survivor can manage. Those that watch the show religiously know that the merge episode is consistently one of the best, most explosive hours of each season, and it was again…but not nearly in the way it normally is. As it has over the years – and as it has more than a few times already this season – Survivor became about much more than the game tonight, a microcosm of real-life issues that we as a society are confronting and will continue to confront into the future.

Such complexities are simply not found on other TV programs. And a two-hour episode of Survivor couldn’t have come at a better time, as the additional time was appropriately used to make sure that they didn’t rush or brush over these systemic problems that face us all.

As I do at the beginning of every recap, please heed the following: Remember that this recap assumes that you have already seen this week’s episode of Survivor: Island of the Idols. If you have not and don’t want to be spoiled, please come back later! It’s important to add that while we WILL hit on all of the important developments of the episode, this is not a linear “blow-by-blow” recap. It is more of a discussion and reaction of what we just witnessed together.

Survivor: Island of the Idols Episode 7 and 8 Recap: Much, Much More Than A Vote

Welcome to those that may be reading this recap for the first time! This Recap marks the very first that we have the honor of featuring the genius artwork of one Erik Reichenbach, the two-time Survivor icon who also happens to be one hell of an artist. His Survivor Art has become quite popular in its own right, and for the past long while had been featured over at People’s Survivor Blog, written by self-proclaimed know-it-all himself, Stephen Fishbach.

With Stephen recently announcing he was hanging up his blogging duties to focus more on his podcasts and family life, we were thrilled to have worked it out with Erik to be the EXCLUSIVE Survivor site to host his drawings/musings/art each and every week of the season moving forward. I know that Erik has a following, and perhaps we’re even picking up a few lost souls with seemingly nowhere to turn following the end of Fishbach’s blog, so to those who are joining us, and to those faithful long-time readers I say: You’ve picked one hell of a week! (And to see Erik’s artwork, keep scrolling down…there are TWO pieces this week for the double-episode!)

Now to lose everyone right away, I’ll begin wit a quote from one of my heroes, Mr. Fred Rogers (yes, that Mister Rogers) who once said: “Anything that is human is mentionable, and anything that is mentionable is manageable. When we can talk about our feelings, they become less overwhelming, less upsetting, and less scary. The people we trust with that important talk can help us know that we are not alone.”

I find this quote to be very relevant given the context of tonight’s two-hour “merge episode.” Usually, at this point in the game, the two pre-merge tribes jockey for position and power, and more often than not this culminates in an entertaining collision of personalities, strategy and opportunity. Of course, every move in the game is important, but when a Sole Survivor is crowned, we can often draw a direct line back to the merge episode as the main turning point in the game, that set the rest of the game in motion. It’s usually unpredictable and thrilling, and is often many fan’s “favorite” episode each season.

Survivor: Island of the Idols Episode 7 and 8 Recap: Much, Much More Than A Vote

Tonight though, was different, in nearly every sense of the word. Over the course of the two-hours we saw three hidden Immunity Idols found and then either wasted (ugh Kellee!) or used (Janet). We saw three Immunity Necklaces, with Aaron winning the first individual Immunity Challenge, and also the second, along with Missy who won one as well. We saw Production break the fourth wall during a confessional, and even a sound crew in frame while Kellee tried to avoid Dan on the beach.

Probst and a contestant had a testy but needed exchange during a Tribal Council, and Boston Rob and Sandra taught us that on Survivor, there are no free lunches (unless you count the merge feast, etc., although we catch his drift). But first and foremost, there was some truly terrible gameplay…”terrible” as in like, poor, crappy, not good…but also “terrible” as in nasty, dirty and perhaps over-the-line. So let’s do this Elaine-style and dive right in, shall we?

So much important stuff was stated during the episode, that I do think that a lot of it speaks for itself. The producers did not set out to make Dan a “bad guy” on National TV, but his inappropriate mannerisms and “touching” of female contestants has been something that the show had shown us nearly from the very beginning of the season…that “slow build” did help the audience have at least a better understanding of the situation heading into this week’s episodes. Dan said it best tonight, and I paraphrase, but it doesn’t quite matter if he is aware of it, not aware of it, or whatever, what matters is that it’s the other person’s truth in terms of how they feel.

“Perception is reality” is a concept that usually comes up at the end of each season during the Final Tribal when the jury is weighing which of the finalists they should award the million bucks to. And in trying to portray this touchy subject (no pun intended) over the course of a two-hour episode, I do feel like the Producers did a good job in trying to show the story from all angles.

Survivor: Island of the Idols Episode 7 and 8 Recap: Much, Much More Than A Vote

As a male myself, I don’t think it is at all appropriate that I try to “man-splain” the details of sexual misconduct or to try to summarize for you the specifics of this collection of incidents. It’s all in the episodes and again I think those involved said it best. I think we all agree that it’s a bummer that Janet threw her game in the toilet in order to do something that she felt was “right,” and that I at least have faith in Jeff Probst, the Producers and this show, that they will remove Dan or anyone else from the game if they deem their actions to be inappropriate…they haven’t yet, so for the time being all of the #MeToo discussions are just healthy debates, and are super-informative for the audience, who gets exposed to different ideas brought up by different people, who come from all walks of life.

RELATED: Survivor

What I would like to address however, is that everything is all fine-and-dandy with the on-air debate, except for the fact that we, the viewers, got to see it all unfold so we know the real “truth” of the matter: That Missy and Elizabeth are, in fact, guilty of taking some nuggets of truth and embellishing them to their advantage in the game.

Elizabeth said over and over again that Dan‘s conduct with her specifically never left her feeling like Dan violated any personal boundaries, and we see and hear Missy telling her that they need to sort of “lean in” to this story in order to swing the vote and the game in their direction. It was dirty. It was maybe inexcusable. But it was completely fair and legal in the context of the game of Survivor. This isn’t quite like Russell Hantz throwing people’s socks into the fire, because it is dealing with the issue of sexual harassment or misconduct, but all is fair in love, war and Survivor…right?

RELATED: Survivor: Island Of The Idols Episode 7 Recap: A Calculated Risk

Survivor: Island of the Idols Episode 7 and 8 Recap: Much, Much More Than A Vote

I think what feels equally dirty for viewers is how Janet took the brunt of the damage for the shady gameplay of others. It’s one thing for them to “go there” when it comes to embellishing their feelings about Dan and his behavior, but it’s another that a very well-liked player like Janet ends up feeling so ostracized afterwards, that she nearly quits the game. And no one came to her rescue. Maybe the most shocking of it all was how they continued to cut to a reaction of Missy, who just looked reaction-less, and also how Elizabeth didn’t seem to really ever own her actions as being “dirty.” Is this how everyone else felt? Man, I can’t wait to read the comments this week!

“The Right Side of the Island”

We could spend countless paragraphs and articles on the overarching topics that Survivor hit on this week, but here’s the last time I’ll say this: The best responses are the ones contained in the episode.

RELATED: Survivor: Island of the Idols Episode 6 Recap: An Aaron Judgment

So let’s segue over into the other kind of “terrible” gameplay! First up…Kellee Kim, what the actual eff were you thinking not playing an Idol? One of your TWO Idols? The “Island of the Idols” has thus far contained a curse for anyone who comes across one of the islands many hidden idols…by my count, Kellee’s TWO unused Idols were the third and fourth souvenirs taken out of the game without being used. Is that some sort of a record?

What is a record, is that Kellee became the first woman and only the second-ever contestant to find two hidden Idols in the same episode (the first was Tai Trang), and also the first woman and second-ever contestant to leave the game with not one but TWO Idols in her pocket (James Clement made the famous blunder previously on Survivor: China). And sorry Kellee, this move follows your questionable call last week to take a “calculated risk” and give away yet another Idol to keep Dean safe in the game! Kellee was great and likable and all that, but she will hands-down be shown in the future montages of “worst moves in Survivor history” or “biggest blunders” or whatever you want to call it. Why are players so hesitant to use their Idols this season?

Survivor: Island of the Idols Episode 7 and 8 Recap: Much, Much More Than A Vote

The other disappointing move this week was how Jamal wasted what could have been a very cool and creative power: The ability to craft his own – anything! – on a piece of parchment that he received from Boston Rob and Sandra. His lame “Legacy Advantage” idea was only made lamer by how he decided to present it to his tribe. Just imagine what he could have come up with! Or how he could have chosen to reveal it back at camp! Heck, he could have hidden it in an obvious place, to be found by an unsuspecting soul. Instead, Jamal really ended up sabotaging himself.

RELATED: Survivor: Island of the Idols Episode 5 Recap: Orange Is Dead

That being said, I’m sorry to lose both Kellee and Jamal. As Kellee stated in her closing remarks, she was her own worst enemy in this game, and for Jamal, he was just fighting an uphill battle for too long. With how “weighty” these episodes have been, I will absolutely miss Jamal’s presence and his incredible insights he’s given…most of all, he’s reminded the viewers that it isn’t really about what is being said, it’s about our own ability to listen, internalize, and really understand where another human being is coming from. Both Jamal and Kellee are two great examples of why this cast is just rockin’, and why this has been one of the most surprisingly better seasons of the past several years.

Survivor: Island of the Idols Episode 7 and 8 Recap: Much, Much More Than A Vote

Episode Take-Away: Putting all of the controversy aside, I’m really digging this season. The cast is fantastic, but oddly there doesn’t seem to be anyone “running the game” at this point, which is a bit strange as usually around the merge is when we start to see front-runners emerge. If anything, the duo of Tommy and Lauren looks powerful and maybe even sneakily unstoppable, unless some other perceptive player(s) can sniff it out and put an end to it before it’s too late. Also, Aaron wins his first two Immunity Challenges?

RELATED: Survivor: Island of the Idols Episode 4 Recap: Blind Faith

His target will get bigger and bigger, but can anyone stop him? Also, is Janet‘s game truly toast at this point or is there any sort of redeemable path forward for her? And with all of the drama tonight, it’s easy to forget just how easy Noura threw Kellee under the bus in the opening scene! Both Jamal and Kellee – the other two in that scene – are now out of the game, so somebody else is bound to feel the Noura burn soon enough!

Voted out this week: Kellee and Jamal

Won Immunity: Aaron (1), Aaron (2), Missy (1)

Vote #1: No Idols were played (although I can’t believe they weren’t!): 8 – Kellee (Elizabeth, Aaron, Missy, Elaine, Dean, Dan, Tommy, Lauren), 5 – Dan (Noura, Karishma, Kellee, Janet, Jamal)

Vote #2: Janet plays an Idol on herself. 6 – Jamal (Aaron, Tommy, Lauren, Janet, Dan, Noura), 3 – Karishma (Lauren, Elizabeth, Elaine), 0 – Janet (2 votes negated by Idol, cast by Karishma and Missy), Jamal no vote due to IOI penalty

Real Housewives Of Orange County Star Kelly Dodd Is Engaged To Rick Leventhal!

Kelly Dodd engaged

Kelly Dodd engaged

Kelly Dodd is off the market, everyone! Her man Rick Leventhal just popped the question and the ring is massive. Real Housewives of Orange County viewers haven’t even seen Rick on the show. At this point, we’ve just seen Dr. Brian Reagan counseling Kelly as she deals with those train rumors.

Nevertheless, she’s onto the next one and they’re moving at lightning speed. Kelly and Rick just started dating this summer, but he popped the question tonight.

Kelly told People, “I’m beyond excited for our future together. Rick is my best friend. My partner in crime. I’m so in love. I can’t believe this happened to me. I feel like I just won the lottery.”

Kelly revealed, “He said this amazing speech about our love and then got down on one knee and pulled out this giant ring. I couldn’t believe it!” And, again, it really is a giant ring.

Rick told People, “And I feel like the luckiest guy on earth.” Aaawww. I would love to know what Dr. Brian thinks though.

Kelly originally broke the news via Instagram Story, before she spoke to People. She is in town for BravoCon, which works out perfectly since Rick has a New York City apartment. He filled the place with flowers and champagne for the proposal.

In the video, Kelly said, “Look at that, it’s a little big. Engaged!” Rick responded, “You deserve a big ring.”

In an Instagram post, Kelly wrote, “I can’t believe I just got engaged !! @rickleventhal you are my Prince and my dream come true!!! #love #engaged #myprince.” In his own Instagram post, Rick wrote, “Dreams do come true.”

Stephanie Hollman Real Housewives Of Dallas

On tonight’s Real Housewives Of Dallas Travis Hollman celebrates his milestone entrance into middle age with two epic 50th birthday parties.

First Stephanie Hollman invites all their close friends and family to Medieval Times to watch Travis be crowned King of … The Over The Hill?

Then comes the ultimate event with massive mid-life crisis themed birthday party. Everyone dresses up as their version of a mid-life crisis. For D’Andra Simmons her worst middle-aged nightmare is turning into Mama Dee. And oh man does she ace this costume.

Things get crazy though when one of the ladies refuses to attend the event which is not so great timing considering the ladies are just days away from leaving on a group trip to Thailand. D’Andra’s behavior also raises cause for concern. Still on a wedding high, LeeAnne Locken is optimistic that this cast trip will finally be one of peace and positivity for her.

Since it’s a pre-cast trip episode that means lots of filler scenes, aka the calm before the transcontinental storm! Kameron Westcott tries to bond with her daughter with some archery. Kary Brittingham has her first photoshoot for her jewelry line which makes it all feel very real. Stephanie struggles with her self-esteem and goes to therapy. Which is probably far more effective than that life coach!

Danielle Staub Returns To Cause Drama On Real Housewives Of New Jersey Tonight

Danielle Staub Returns To Cause Drama On Real Housewives Of New Jersey Tonight

Like it or not, Danielle Staub is back on Real Housewives of New Jersey tonight. The episode was filmed before she and Teresa Giudice had their falling out, which we will hopefully see as the season progresses. Joe Giudice calls Teresa, their daughters, and their omnipresent attorney from the ICE detention facility. He doesn’t want them to visit him because they would have to talk to him through a screen, which is a major contrast from the low-security prison he was in for years.

Understandably, Gia, Gabriella, and Milania Giudice are emotional during that phone call. Dolores Catania throws a fun event to get Teresa’s mind off of the drama. And, this is where Danielle comes in. Teresa invites her, which causes some drama. Let’s hope Margaret Josephs throws some shade her way.

Aside from the deportation story, which is bound to dominate the season, there are some other things happening during tonight’s new episode of Real Housewives of New Jersey. Dolores‘ ex-husband Frank Catania is still working on the new house for her boyfriend, David Principe. It’s an unconventional situation that works for the three of them, except for one thing: David is not comfortable with the PDA in front of Frank.

Not only that, but Frank worries that Dolores has a different time table for their relationship than David does.

I’m not sure what else we can expect from RHONJ aside from the never-ending Giudice family saga. Will Jackie Goldschneider continue to harp on that Instagram Story video of Jennifer Aydin making fun of her? Will Melissa Gorga introduce the clearly-contrived storyline about how she wants to have another baby? We will find out!

Kenya Moore Wants To Have A Second Child Via Surrogate

Kenya Moore Porsha Williams

Kenya Moore Porsha Williams

Kenya Moore’s daughter Brooklyn Daly just turned one year old about a week ago and Kenya is already thinking about giving her a sibling. To make matters even more complicated, Kenya and her husband Marc Daly announced their separation in September.

However, she has been very open about her desire to get back together and work on their relationship. Is this really the best time to add a baby? That’s not my call to make, but Kenya recently opened up about the possibility of having a second child.

Kenya told Us Weekly, “I didn’t need to consider [surrogacy the first] time. But now that I’ve had complications after giving birth, it’s probably the only way I could carry, have a child again.” Kenya has a very rough birth. She lost a lot of blood, had to undergo an additional surgery that day, and she even thought she died at one point during the dramatic delivery. No one can blame the 48-year-old mom for looking into other options if she does decide to add to her family.

Kenya told the magazine that she wants to have another kid because her daughter “Brooklyn loves other kids.” Kenya explained,  “I would like for her to have a playmate and someone who is like her confidant and close [friend], and I want that for her. I just don’t know [when].” And, again, there’s that whole separation thing. Neither Marc nor Kenya has actually filed for divorce, so it’s unclear what’s happening between them or how another baby would factor into their decisions. Maybe she will have baby number two on her own.

RELATED: Kenya Moore Thought She Died During Delivery Complications; Wants A Second Child

Kenya also said that she feels like she is “pushing a certain number” when it comes to her age. She wants to take the precautions to make sure that she is just “healthy, vibrant [and] available” for a second baby as she has been with little Brooklyn.

Kenya has a lot to figure out these days and I’m not even talking about her feuds with her Real Housewives Of Atlanta co-stars.

Kathryn Dennis Says She & Thomas Ravenel Resolved All Of Their Custody Issues

Southern Charm Kathryn Dennis

Southern Charm Kathryn Dennis

Wait. Did hell freeze over? Are pigs flying? There’s actually some positive news in Kathryn Dennis and Thomas Ravenel’s highly-documented custody issues. Yes, the Southern Charm star and former cast member (sorry, Thomas) are finally on the same page when it comes to their kids Kensie and Saint.

There has been a lot of drama between these two. Kathryn allegedly didn’t tell Thomas that she got in a car accident while their kids were present. A friend of his accused Kathryn of burglary. A video surfaced of Thomas allegedly doing drugs. Kathryn claimed that Thomas launched a fully-decorated Christmas tree at her and drunkenly fell in a pool while he was holding their daughter. Thomas accused Kathryn of going to rehab to cover up getting an abortion. And those are just the very recent stories. There’s a lot more drama in their history. There’s no word of what it took for them to put all the madness behind them, but they seem to be in a truly better place these days.

Kathryn tweeted yesterday, “Just want to let my fans hear from me officially that Thomas and I have resolved all matters related to our children. I believe that this joint custody arrangement is in our children’s best interests. Happy to move forward. Thank y’all for all of your patience, support & love -kd.”

Thomas responded to a fan that congratulated the former couple with “Just retweeted it. That was quite nice of her.”

Wow. It is just that simple. After so much drama, no one saw that coming. For the sake of their two kids, let’s hope that the amicable state of their co-parenting relationship actually lasts. Now, I am just wondering if Thomas will continue his lawsuit against Bravo.

Yes, after restraining orders, months of public mudslinging, and a divorce that was just way too messy for an eight-week marriage, these two hung out. And made a public spectacle of it, of course.

One of Danielle’s many enemies, Margaret Josephs, weighed in on their reconciliation during her appearance on Watch What Happens Live last week.

During the episode, Andy Cohen told Margaret, “Danielle and Marty, I guess, were posting today on Instagram. They were together today. What do you think about them together?”

Without any hesitation, Margaret said, “I think they’re freaks.” She was not done though. She went through a super-abbreviated recap of their divorce drama. Margaret said, “Listen, she gets a restraining order against him, accuses him of abuse. They’re married for eight weeks and she trashes his family all over town. She gets engaged to some other nutbar.” Oh, wow. I almost forgot that Danielle got engaged within days of finalizing her divorce from Marty. She was almost a duchess, you guys. Countess Luann de Lesseps was shaking. I kid.

Margaret concluded, “And now, they’re like back together? They’re both freaks. They deserve each other.” And they clearly just want some attention. And they got it. Congratulations, you guys. But, no matter how many exes Danielle hangs out with or how many engagement rings she receives, she’s never gonna be full-time on Real Housewives of New Jersey again. Especially not at this point.

90 Day Fiance: Leida Margaretha Reconciles With Husband Eric Rosenbrook’s Daugther Tasha

Leida Margaretha Reconciles With Husband Eric Rosenbrook’s Daugther Tasha

90 Day Fiance alum Leida Margaretha made it clear that she wanted to be her husband Eric Rosenbrook’s “number one priority.”  As the season progressed, Leida alienated Eric’s ex-wife and elder daughter.  Tasha Rosenbrook was the prime target because she was sharing an apartment with her father at the time Leida moved to the U.S.

On screen, the drama peaked when Leida threw Tasha out of their apartment.  The damage between father and daughter seemed irreparable as Eric backed the decision.  Offscreen, the drama escalated on social media to the point where Leida filed a restraining order against her step-daughter, who recently changed her name to Alari Stark.

Recently, Leida decided to drop the restraining order in an effort to make amends.  She and Alari spoke to In Touch Weekly about their reconciliation.

As the one who put the order in first place, Leida took a moment to explain why she decided to drop it.  She said, “the restraining order [was] never meant to be forever.  I did that because I had to.  I have nothing against Alari.  It breaks my heart to see this family had to [be] this way, and I know that my husband, Eric, is really [caring] and he loves his kids.  Then when I heard they’re both sincere and talk each other again, I’m thinking like, ‘[Why] should I continue this family feud?”

Leida revealed that their shared love of cosplay helped she and Alari to find common ground.  Leida explained, “at the same time, I heard from my husband that Alari has nothing against me either, so I think it [was] best to proceed to dismiss the restraining order.  Especially [since] Alari and I shared the same hobbies like crafting, cosplay, and art, so it’s so unfortunate if we can’t support each other as a family.  We are family, whether you like it or not, we are somehow related.  So, that’s also the reason why I decided to drop it.”

But it was not an easy process.  Alari explained that she had a hard time trusting her step-mother again.  She said, “the 90 Day drama aside, I’ve been going through a lot  and things have been stupid hard for me lately.  So allowing anybody new in my life, whether or not I’ve known them in the past, has been a trip.  A middle school friend recently reached out to me and though we were great friends then, with my paranoia, I’m having a hard time trusting them.  Cosplay has helped, but this isn’t anything I’ve planned on stopping, despite the many people trying to get me to.  The family support is nice though.”

Cosplay became a family affair.  Leida and Alari worked together on a costume for Eric’s youngest daughter Jennica.  “While both Alari and I were working on the costume separately because we’re not allowed to make contact to each other I was also at the same time, [in the process of getting] my lawyer to prepare all the paperwork and send it to the court and wait for the judge to sign it,” Leida said, “so at that time while we’re both working on that, my husband Eric was our middle guy, or the messenger of both Alari and I.”

Leida spoke highly of her step-daughter, “we shared the same hobbies, talents, interests, so its not hard at all.  And yes, shared interest of cosplay helps a lot.  Also, Alari has an amazing talent, also she needs more guidance, more support from the family, and more great resources.  We just need to keep supporting each other, since we’re family.”

The two cosplay enthusiasts presented panels together at the Wizard Wold Comic Con in Madison, Wisconsin last month.  Clearly, their relationship has come a long way.  And Leida is intent on being a good stepmother to all of Eric’s daughters.  She said, “I will always help and keep supporting not only Alari but for all the kids, [including] her sisters and my own son, to improve their talents.”
