Survivor: Island Of The Idols Episode 10 Recap: And The Game Continues On

Survivor: Island Of The Idols Episode 10 Recap: And The Game Continues On

This past week was maybe the most brutal in the history of Survivor. The game has a tendency to spill over into real life from time to time, as everybody always is saying how Survivor represents a microcosm of human society. But after last week’s episode, things didn’t just “spill over,” the whole dam broke wide open. The entire controversy surrounding Dan and his inappropriate “touching” of other players, including Kellee, combined with a perfect storm of misinformation regarding all sides, led to an ugly hour of television for millions that were watching.

As millions more expressed their outrage and anger on social media following last week’s airing, things have snowballed to the point that many refused to watch the show at all moving forward, and even two prominent voices in the Survivor community – People‘s Stephen Fishbach and The Hollywood Reporter‘s Josh Wigler – announced that they would no longer even cover the show (to be clear, Fishbach “retired” his blog the week prior, which is pretty coincidental timing, and Wigler  – who was facing issues outside of the game, mixed with his utter disgust over last week’s episode – announced he was done with Survivor…I personally wish the both of them the best moving forward both personally and professionally).

Worst of all: Complete “radio silence” from the official CBS Survivor and Jeff Probst Twitter accounts. It seems they were just hoping this PR nightmare would die down on its own or possibly blow over, as I think it’s quite obvious at this point that the response to last week’s episode was not at all how CBS, Probst and the other producers had expected it to be.

We’ll get to all of the controversy, but with tonight’s newest episode, the game continued on, for better or worse. As I do at the beginning of every recap, please heed the following: Remember that this recap assumes that you have already seen this week’s episode of Survivor: Island of the Idols. If you have not and don’t want to be spoiled, please come back later! It’s important to add that while we WILL hit on all of the important developments of the episode, this is not a linear “blow-by-blow” recap. It is more of a discussion and reaction of what we just witnessed together.

Survivor: Island Of The Idols Episode 10 Recap: And The Game Continues On

Yes, what a week it was. If you’re reading this, it looks like you decided to continue watching what is and always has been the greatest Reality TV Competition Show of all-time…whatever your reasons. Perhaps you found yourself disturbed, or even downright disgusted, at what went down last week, but you are deciding to stick it out anyways. Maybe you watched out of curiosity to see if there would be any sort of follow-up discussion in the aftermath of last week’s Tribal Council (there wasn’t). Or perhaps you find yourself reading this Recap because you’re feeling lost after Wigler and Fishbach‘s coverage disappeared at the very moment you needed insight into all of this the most.

My strategy as a guy who has loved Survivor from Episode 1 Season 1, and who has covered the show professionally since Season 20, is to lean into the controversy. I love reading fan reaction to the show, and when topics like the ones that were raised last week pop up, my inclination is to want to listen even more, not less.

RELATED: Survivor: Island Of The Idols Episode 8 & 9 Recap: Much, Much More Than A Vote

We were all different levels of disturbed this past week, and if you follow Twitter at all, you spent the week reading statements made about the incident from all of those involved, from Aaron’s emotional video apology, to Missy’s written statement, to Elizabeth’s written statement, to Kellee’s twitter response to Janet’s twitter response, to the insightful interview of Jamal by XfinityTV’s Gordon Holmes. If you haven’t read these, I urge you to (after finishing this Recap of course…). The more knowledge we have, the more perspective and perhaps compassion we gain for everyone associated with this messy, messy situation, a situation that none of them – and none of us viewers – signed up for.

Survivor: Island Of The Idols Episode 10 Recap: And The Game Continues On

There’s much more to say about all of this, which is why I’m also announcing that I’m bringing back the FilmSurvivor Podcast this week to discuss everything that’s been going on with the show as of late. I’ll be joined by fellow Survivor-lover, the incredible Mara Reinstein of US Weekly and Parade, who has covered the show in the past and who was out on the island many times as an elite member of the press (including for upcoming Season 40).

I plan to let Mara do a lot of the talking, and me a lot of the listening, as we try to grapple with where the show goes from here, and if it is at all possible for this season and Survivor as a whole to ever recover from the feeling that this controversy has left everyone with. Join us won’t you? It will be up Thursday evening (click the FilmSurvivor Podcast link above or subscribe to the FilmSurvivor Podcast on Podbean and/or iTunes).

RELATED: Survivor: Island Of The Idols Episode 7 Recap: A Calculated Risk

Now, on to tonight! Survivor’s 39th Season marched right along tonight, without barely a mention of what had come before. It brought with it a new twist that actually was sort of cool, a double-elimination episode the likes of which I’m not sure we’ve ever seen? The 11 remaining players were randomly split into two teams (of 5 and of 6), and one person from each team would win Immunity…however both teams would separately go to their own Tribal Council, where each team would vote out one member before all was said and done.

And although it appeared that Karishma and Janet were the easy targets this week, this episode was really all about them, and they both showed that they may have some lasting staying power in the game: Janet as a real threat to win, and Karishma as the ideal “goat” candidate to sit next to at the end.

Survivor: Island Of The Idols Episode 10 Recap: And The Game Continues On

In Janet‘s case, she mended things with Dan and tried to subtly work her way back into her teammate’s good graces. The “team split” left her as the easy target, but nowadays the obvious vote is rarely the person who is sent home. With Karishma, as Boston Rob joked, she is most likely being kept around because nobody would vote for her to win the game, but to Karishma’s credit, she really worked things to her advantage tonight, and even ended up stumbling upon a hidden Immunity Idol to boot. Better still, she didn’t have to play it, and somehow managed to get one of the most aggressive players, Missy, out of the game with a massive blindside.

Survivor: Island Of The Idols Episode 10 Recap: And The Game Continues On

The episode ended with yet another “learning moment” (there have been several this season, from the “durag” comment between Jamal and Jack, to the women’s alliance bias discussion, to last week’s sexual misconduct talk), but this time it was Missy bringing it to Jeff‘s attention. In all of the other drama that happened last week, Missy pointed out that in fact, two African-Americans had won Immunity at the same time, and that was to be celebrated.

I loved Jeff’s response, because he was right…in many ways, it would have been highly inappropriate for Jeff, a white male, to bring this to the attention of others…or if not, it was at least on Jeff’s mind that it could be perceived in such a way. With Missy bringing it to his and our attention, it allowed everyone to realize that it was an important moment on the show, and one that should be celebrated.

Never mind that those same two players – Aaron and Missy – both left the show as a result of tonight’s twisty episode. They were both incredibly strong players, Aaron as the game’s most dominant physical threat (he had already won two individual Immunities) and Missy as one of the game’s biggest strategic threats. I do agree with the assessment that Missy was playing the game too fast, too hard, and this can be tracked all the way back to Day One with her. For a minute it really looked like she was in control and that Tommy was in big trouble, but Karishma‘s unpredictable nature really ended up being Missy’s downfall.

Survivor: Island Of The Idols Episode 10 Recap: And The Game Continues On

Speaking of Tommy, his “power couple” relationship with Lauren is one of the closest things to watch as we are now down to just nine players remaining. Of the nine, Karishma and Janet feel like they are completely on the outside, and I’m imagining Elizabeth will feel similar now that her closest ally’s torch has been snuffed out. Dan is a dead-end as far as winning the game goes (could you imagine???) and Noura is just…Noura.

Tommy and Lauren have a long way to go and there’s lots of game still to be played (and lots of Idols still to be found), but it’s starting to appear that there may not be anyone savvy enough, or another coalition that is organized or focused enough, to identify them as the big threats that they are and really go after them. Any combination of things can still happen, but I’m really thinking at this point, that Lauren is really in an incredible spot, next to Tommy as her human shield.

What do you all think? I’m really looking forward to reading your reactions not only to this episode, but to last week’s episode fallout too, and I do hope to hear from you after listening to the Podcast as well! And now, another brilliant piece of art from former Survivor, Erik Reichenbach!

Episode Take-Away: I was wondering how the show would move forward, and I wasn’t at all surprised that it did just decide to press right along. From a game standpoint, I kind of dug the double-Tribal twist, and I think it played out quite nicely. We lost two really strong players this week, which only makes the game all the more interesting moving forward. We’re down to nine players, with the Finale just four weeks away.

That may not be enough time to distance itself from the controversy, and we all know that regardless of how this season goes, we are all in for a serious “learning moment” when it comes time for this season’s Live Reunion Show. I’m not sure this season can recover from what it’s gone through, but I do know that Survivor is not going anywhere anytime soon. Let’s all process it and heal together.

RELATED: Survivor: Island of the Idols Episode 3 Recap: Lessons Learned?

On a side note, how is that Boston Rob and Sandra twist working out? It has to go down as maybe THE lamest theme and twist in the show’s history, and it’s been all but forgotten these past two weeks. Yes, I enjoy the in-game commentary from Rob and Sandra from their little spy shack during Tribal, but I’m not sure it’s worth it ultimately. The “Statler and Waldorf” of Survivor, these two “Idols” and icons deserve better.

Survivor: Island Of The Idols Episode 10 Recap: And The Game Continues On

Voted out this week: Aaron and Missy

Next Week’s Episode: Finally some drama at the Island of the Idols as Sandra is bit by a chicken while eating! And the power duo of Tommy and Laura continue to maneuver themselves further into the game.

With Kameron Westcott and Stephanie Hollman scarcely speaking you’d think they’d be barely able to survive the trip without some major issues, but after Kameron reads up on the ground rules for proper decorum in Thailand they decide to just get along to go along. Which is a good thing because D’Andra Simmons has no such plans!

D’Andra has a surprise in store for LeeAnne when she shows up to their first dinner wearing one of LeeAnne’s L’Infinity dresses as a joke. A joke which LeeAnne does NOT take well. As LeeAnne freaks out and finds an unlikely defender in Brandi Redmond, Kary and D’Andra are put on the defense! Kary refuses to be contrite, however, mentioning all the negativity and rudeness LeeAnne has directed at her since Day 1 (true).

Kim Richards “Never Really Liked” Camille Grammer’s Ex Kelsey Grammer

Kim Richards “Never Really Liked” Camille Grammer’s Ex Kelsey Grammer

Although Camille Grammer is a super polarizing figure among the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills fans, we are (pretty much) all on the same page when it comes to Kelsey Grammer. He is one of the worst husbands in Real Housewives history. We will never forget him cheating on Camille during Season 1. Since then, Camille has shared that they don’t talk, instead parenting their children through a third party. She also said that he never contacted her when her home burned to the ground in the wildfires.

I can’t decide if Kelsey is a worse husband or a worse ex. Either way, he’s one of the worst. Recently, he referred to Camille as “pathetic” and claimed that she asked for a divorce at his mother’s funeral. Now, Camille’s former RHOBH costar Kim Richards is weighing in on their never-ending drama.

In an interview with HollywoodLife, Kim began, “That’s terrible. Maybe there’s something we don’t know. I don’t know. But I feel bad if that’s happening because nobody wants to be … Nobody likes that. And I don’t think that’s fair.” And it’s completely unnecessary. If he doesn’t want to be associated with Camille anymore, he shouldn’t talk about her.

Kim also told the website, “I don’t really like that guy.” Same here, Kim.

Kim seemingly referred to his Season 1 antics when she remarked, “I never liked what he did to her. I don’t know him personally. I met him and I liked him when I met him, but I think what he did to her was pretty s***ty but I don’t know their story. So I only know what I saw. He could be a great guy and there could be a reason that I don’t know about.”

Kim continued, “I was friends with her when that happened and I thought that was really not…. But people cheat people, that happens, people leave. So maybe he’s a great guy, she’s a great girl. I don’t know. I just thought to do that publicly during that time was not very fair.” Agreed, Kim

Kelly Dodd Says Her Ex-Husband Is Jealous Of Her Engagement

Kelly Dodd Engagement Drama – Says Ex-Husband Is Jealous

Anyone who has been keeping tabs on the Real Housewives of Orange County knows that cast member Kelly Dodd is always bringing attention to herself with something she says. But most recently, it’s something she did that has everyone talking. Kelly recently announced via Instgram that she is engaged to her new boyfriend Rick Leventhal.

Cast mates Emily Simpson and Braunwyn Windham-Burke, along with various Housewives from the other franchises immediately reacted on social media to show their excitement over the engagement. Kelly happily showed off that goose egg of a rock he put on her finger.

But not everyone is excited for Kelly and her new fiancé. This past weekend at BravoCon, Kelly revealed that ex-husband Michael Dodd is none too pleased about her engagement. During her panel with fellow cast mates Shannon Beador, Tamra Judge, Gina Kirschenheiter, Emily and Braunwyn, Kelly told the crowd, “Michael and I are fighting right now,” adding, “He’s jealous of the engagement.” Kelly was married to Michael from 2006-2017 and they share a daughter, Jolie, who often appears on RHOC alongside Kelly.  Kelly continued, “We’re not in the best shape right now.”

But a little jealousy from her ex won’t kick Kelly off cloud nine. In an interview with People, Kelly says “I’m beyond excited for our future together”. She continued to gush, “Rick is my best friend. My partner in crime. I’m so in love. I can’t believe this happened to me. I feel like I just won the lottery!” For his part, Rick is equally excited adding, “I feel like the luckiest guy on earth.”

Kelly and Rick have been on a whirlwind romance since August after being introduced by Real Housewives of New York star Ramona Singer. Rick is a Fox News correspondent living in New York. But, Kelly is banking on him being transferred to Los Angeles soon so they can be closer to one another.

Despite Rick not being shy about his relationship with Kelly, she says he won’t be filming with her anytime soon. Kelly said, “He works for Fox. So, I don’t think Fox will allow him to film.”

That’s a shame because I for one would be curious to see this relationship play out on screen.

Nene Leakes Dishes On Her Open Marriage Discussion With Husband Gregg

Nene Leakes Explores The Idea of Open Marriage With Husband Gregg

Nene Leakes of The Real Housewives of Atlanta is never one to shy away from speaking her mind. The longtime Housewifefaces a lot of challenges this season, from the return of nemesis and new mother Kenya Moore, to continuing her feud with onetime friend Cynthia Bailey

The “I said what I said” peach is now giving her castmates a rest from the drama and sounding off about her longtime marriage to husband and cancer survivor, Gregg Leakes. And although Nene has been absent from the first two episodes of RHOA season 12, She’s planning to make up for lost time with some eyebrow-raising revelations about her current state of errr, affairs.

As Nene recently told Entertainment Tonight, “We’re just really having a grown-up, adult conversation about open marriages,” NeNe explains, clarifying that she and Gregg do not currently have an open marriage. “Of course, I wouldn’t want to have an open marriage and, if it really got to that point, I’d probably give Gregg the peace sign, but people have had a lot of things to say about our relationship.”

She went on to say, “Our relationship is great!” She continued, “I mean, we’ve been together forever, but I’m with Gregg because I want to be with Gregg, don’t get it twisted. If I did not want to be with Gregg, I would not be with Gregg, and I would tell Gregg very openly. You know, I don’t hold my tongue about stuff.” Yes, we know!

RELATED: Nene Leakes Discusses Possibility Of “Open Marriage” With Gregg Leakes

After the last season of Nene openly struggling with caring for an ailing Gregg, viewers had conflicting takes on whether or not Nene was a long-suffering wife or a cold-hearted caretaker. While Nene was apologetically herself through the whole matter, she has come out of the proverbial woods with Gregg in remission and both of them becoming ambassadors for the American Cancer Society. Their marriage is stronger than ever and it seems like Nene is in a good place. Does that mean the drama will stop for Nene this season? Doubtful as Nene always seems to find a way.

Gizelle Bryant On Monique Samuels & Candiace Dillard’s Physical Altercation: “As Black Women, We are Better Than Anything Physical”; Ashley Darby Weighs In

Gizelle Bryant On Monique Samuels & Candiace Dillard’s Physical Altercation: “As Black Women, We are Better Than Anything Physical”; Ashley Darby Weighs In

Normally, I think of myself as a pretty patient person. However, that doesn’t apply to Real Housewives of Potomac Season 5. I need new RHOP and I need it now. Unfortunately for me, the season is still in production. However, it’s not as if all of the storylines are completely secret.

We have all heard about the “alleged” physical altercation that went down between Monique Samuels and Candiace Dillard. As Gizelle Bryant would say (a million times over), “the word on the street” is that it all started when Candiace hit Monique in the face with a wine glass. Then, Monique allegedly pulled her down by the hair. Well, Candiace was begging Monique to drag her all of Season 4, but Monique was pregnant. Now, I’m sure Candiace is shook. She took legal action and Monique countersued.  It sounds like such a hot mess and I can’t help flashing back to the Season 4 reunion. Monique and Candiace, cried, hugged, and vowed to repair their fractured friendship. Welp, that’s clearly out the window at this point.

In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Gizelle shared, “I was actually there, so I was super duper hurt, I was very sad.” Gizelle continued, “I felt like we’re better than this and this is really, really unnecessary.”

Then, Gizelle declared, “We are going to see it play out and I’m curious to see how it does play out. But always feel like we, as women, especially as black women, we are better than anything physical.”

In thar same interview, Ashley Darby revealed that she wasn’t present for the reported incident. Still, she did say, “And when you see how and why, it’s very — it’s crazy.”

Ashley told the publication, “Obviously I don’t want to see anything go down that’s controversial or physical between my friends, but it is what it is, and the way that it happened, unfortunately I didn’t see everything in the way it happened, so I don’t know all the details.” Alright, then, I’m gonna need more comments from Gizelle. Or anyone else who was actually present.

At the very least the “alleged” incident was filmed, so I am assuming we will all see what happened eventually. They have to show this during Season 5, right?

Kelly Dodd Says Her Daughter Has Never Met Fiancé Rick Leventhal In Person

Kelly Dodd Dishes The Details Of Her Engagement; Reveals Her Daughter Has Never Met Rick Leventhal In Person

Just in case you hadn’t heard, Kelly Dodd is engaged! The outspoken Real Housewives of Orange County star announced her engagement to New York based reporter Rick Leventhal last week after a whirlwind courtship. It seems like just yesterday that Kelly was dating plastic surgeon Brian Reagan, who has been featured numerous times on season 14 of RHOC. Maybe it wasn’t yesterday, but it was just a few months ago that they broke up!

We all know that Kelly does things her own way and in her own style. So, her lightning speed engagement should not be a surprise. She has already picked a wedding date of 10-10-20. Of course, Kelly being Kelly, she has not exactly worked out all the logistics of how she and Rick will incorporate their lives together.

In an interview with Page Six, Kelly revealed that one little detail–OK, one GIANT detail of her new relationship–has not yet come together. Surprisingly, Kelly admits that her daughter Jolie and Rick have not actually met in person. She admitted, “She hasn’t met Rick yet but she sees him on FaceTime.”

Such a small detail. Why in the world would you want your daughter to meet the man you are going to marry? Although 13-year old Jolie seems wise beyond her years–in fact, wiser than some of her mother’s co-stars, how could someone get engaged without their child meeting that person–in person–first? Many people don’t even introduce their children to someone they are dating in the time frame it took Kelly to become engaged.

Kelly went on to add, “So [Jolie has] met him, but she hasn’t properly met him.” This seems problematic on so many levels, but maybe I am just judgmental. Hopefully, Jolie will meet Rick in person before the wedding! Mama Kelly has a year to make it happen.

Maybe Kelly is just too caught up in her engagement to think through all of those pesky logistics. She told Page Six that the engagement was a big shock. “Yes, I was actually. Very shocked! I mean, I knew it was going to happen because I picked out the ring but I didn’t know when.” Kelly also said, “I thought it was Christmas.”

She insisted, “I didn’t know he was going to buy it. I just said, ‘I like that ring!’”

Kelly might not have a solid plan for Jolie and Rick to meet, but she has started to plan the wedding. She shared, “I wanna do Napa but he has a house in Miami or Delray or whatever … he’s doing his 60th there at the Wall in the W.” Miami, Delray, Boca, Fort Lauderdale, Key West…a house in one of those places. You might want to nail down the exact Florida address before you hire a band and a caterer, Kelly!

Lest you think Kelly completely has her head in the clouds of love, she is focused on Jolie’s education, revealing she is helping her daughter apply to private Orange County high schools. Which likely ties her to the OC for the foreseeable future.

“I wish I could [move to New York],” Kelly stated. “I feel like I’m always with Ramona [Singer] and Dorinda [Medley] and Sonja [Morgan] so I mean it would be a great transition. It would be kind of cool to have a job transfer. I fit right in.” Kelly recently teased she might like to become one of the Real Housewives of New York.

For now, it sounds like Kelly is staying put in Orange County. She and former hubby Michael Dodd have joint custody, so her options for moving are probably limited. Kelly and Rick will eventually have to determine if one of them will move or they will be bi-coastal. Just one more detail for Kelly to work on before her wedding. Taking place in Napa, Miami, Delray, the Everglades or wherever. The only thing for certain at this point is that Vicki Gunvalson won’t be throwing Kelly a bridal shower!
