It’s easy to criticize Scheana Shay. Almost too easy. As such, it’s often hard to remember the things she struggles with. For example, the Vanderpump Rules star’s postpartum OCD which she opened up about in January last year.
As she explained on her podcast, “Up until the last six months, just being a new mom and dealing with these intrusive thoughts and feelings that I knew wasn’t postpartum depression, I didn’t know what it was, and I think therapy is really helping me, and I love it.”
How refreshing to see a reality star trying to address their issues with professional help rather than run away from them. Scheana still struggles, however, and understandably so. Last week, she reflected on her journey with the condition.
Scheana reveals her OCD brain treatment
At the Vanderpump Rules Season 11 premiere, Scheana spoke with PEOPLE about her postpartum OCD. She explained, “I feel like, especially as a mom, postpartum OCD is something that’s not talked about.”
PEOPLE quoted the International OCD Foundation in its explanation of postpartum OCD: “The obsessions and compulsions usually focus on the newborn (or unborn) infant. For example, there may be obsessions about the baby getting hurt, contaminated, or lost; and compulsive rituals involving checking, mental rituals, and seeking reassurance.”
Scheana went on, “It’s misdiagnosed. A lot of people don’t know what’s wrong with them. And so once I figured this out, I was like, ‘Oh my God. Now it makes sense.’” She added, “I’ve since had a brain scan. I’m on a whole brain and power supplement pack. And I feel like those have been really helping my intrusive thoughts and just overall how I’m feeling.”
Despite her strides, she also shared, “But I mean, it is, you know, a battle every day in my brain.” Scheana does have a point – conditions specific to women (and especially mothers) often don’t receive enough discussion. Just another symptom of the patriarchy.
Vanderpump Rules Season 11 hits Bravo on Tuesday, January 30 at 8/7c.
