A Senate hearing meant to scrutinize Jack Smith’s Trump investigations veered into college basketball Tuesday after a Republican senator confused the Atlanta Hawks with the Iowa Hawkeyes, prompting the former special counsel to invoke Caitlin Clark’s name.

Sen. Eric Schmitt, R-Mo., opened his questioning during the Senate Judiciary Committee hearing by asking Jack Smith whether he attended a Golden State Warriors-Atlanta Hawks NBA game on February 3, 2024. Schmitt tied the date to Fani Willis’s acknowledgment of her relationship with Nathan Wade, the prosecutor in Georgia’s election case against President Donald Trump.
“What city would that be in?” Smith asked, appearing puzzled. “Atlanta,” Schmitt replied. Smith denied the claim outright. “I definitely did not go to a Hawks game. I’m sure of that,” he said, adding he did not believe he had been in Atlanta that day.
Schmitt pressed harder, claiming he possessed text messages placing Smith at the game. A staffer held up a poster board showing three messages, then quickly removed it. Smith objected that he never got a chance to read them. “I think you’ve already perjured yourself,” Schmitt said. He later branded Smith a “total dirtbag.”
Then Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., used her questioning time to let Smith respond. He recalled attending a Maryland basketball game against Iowa around that date, with U.S. Marshals accompanying him. Klobuchar checked the schedule. Iowa faced Maryland on February 3, 2024, in College Park.
The Hawkeyes won 93-85, and Caitlin Clark scored 38 points. Klobuchar then pointed out Schmitt’s apparent mix-up between the NBA’s Hawks and Iowa’s Hawkeyes, telling him the false implication warranted an apology; Schmitt refused. Smith also denied ever meeting Willis or Wade.
After the hearing, Schmitt told NBC News that prosecutors would decide whether perjury occurred. That evening, he posted on X (formerly Twitter): “Who knew Jack Smith was a Caitlin Clark fan?”
All in all, the Caitlin Clark moment overshadowed what was supposed to be a focused Senate hearing on Smith’s probes of Trump. Republicans have long alleged coordination between the Biden White House and local prosecutors, though Schmitt’s evidence collapsed under a simple team-name confusion.
