It’s no secret that there is no love lost between Real Housewives of New Jersey co-stars Margaret Josephs and Danielle Staub. After dealing with Danielle’s bridezilla tantrums last season, Margaret decided that she had enough.
At a legendary dinner in Cabo, Margaret tossed a glass of wine at Danielle after Danielle brought up Margaret’s stepchildren. Then chaos erupted at the table with glass and insults flying. Thankfully, the table appeared to be bolted down, and flip-proof. (I’m looking at you Teresa Giudice!) During the RHONJ Season 9 finale, when Danielle’s then-husband Marty Caffrey insulted Margaret, Margaret and her husband Joe Benigno, “helped” Marty take a refreshing swim in Jennifer Aydin’s pool.
In a trailer for Season 10 of RHONJ, Margaret said, “These women would hold a bloody knife, stab you in the back and say they didn’t do it. I don’t trust anyone.” Then viewers see someone’s hand yanking Margaret’s ponytail hard.
In an interview with HollywoodLife, Margaret and Dolores Catania broke down how Margaret’s ponytail was pulled so hard that Margaret experienced whiplash. “We see my ‘unbeweavable’ ponytail pull right in the trailer. I had it a little rough this year,” Margaret remarked on the HollywoodLife Podcast. Dolores said, “You got assaulted.” So, who attacked Margaret’s ponytail? Someone who preferred her pig-tailed look from earlier seasons?
“We all know all our friend group, so I’m sure you guys could assume who it is, though I’m not going to say. But, it was a sneak attack from behind–The worst kind,” Margaret explained. “I mean I’ve got whiplash, I’m going to leave it at that. I definitely got a whiplash from it. No bleeding, thank God. But definitely a whiplash.”
Margaret credited Dolores for helping Margaret “clean up the mess” after the attack. Dolores had her back turned during the assault, so she isn’t the culprit. “I know she would have jumped in. I know she would have jumped in to save me,” Margaret stated. Dolores responded, “Yes, of course I would have.” It looks as though tension is high between Margaret and Danielle during the trailer, so it is obvious probably Danielle who pulled Margaret’s hair.
Margaret felt like she has dealt with drama since she joined RHONJ during Season 8. Margaret said, “I don’t think anything really gets me down. I’ve been trashed, I was called an anti-semi, homewrecker, this and that. But, I think if you believe in yourself and you’re confident in your being and stand by what you believe in and are authentic, you can survive anything,” Margaret added.
One former Jersey Housewife has her finger pointed at Danielle as Margaret’s attacker, and I will leave it up to your imagination which finger it is. Remember that crazy fight at the country club in Season 2, when Teresa chased Danielle through the building? Then Jacqueline Laurita’s daughter Ashlee Holmes pulled on Danielle’s extensions? Danielle promptly started legal action against Ashlee. Oh, and Danielle also brought a mannequin head, complete with hair extensions, to the Season 2 reunion so she could re-create the traumatic event.
So, this scenario is giving Jacqueline serious deja-vu, and she took to Twitter to share her thoughts. “It’s interesting to me that Danielle Slob prosecuted my 18 year old daughter for pulling her weave when she, as an ADULT, ripped out @MargaretJosephs hair in a tantrum. God I hope Margaret brings a mannequin head to the reunion to demonstrate the attack and sues her ass. #RHONJ,” she tweeted.
Time will tell who pulled Margaret’s hair, but the good news is that Margaret, like her hair, survived the sneak attack.

Ciao y’all! Teresa Giudice has had a whirlwind life. Real Housewives of New Jersey made her famous. Committing fraud made her a felon. After she served time in the slammer for her crimes, it was her husband’s turn. Joe Giudice has been away from his wife and family since his prison term began in 2016. When his sentence concluded, he was immediately transported to an ICE facility because he is not a legal US citizen. While waiting for the final deportation decision, Joe requested to spend the remainder of the period in Italy, so off he went.
This is the moment Teresa and Joe’s daughters have been waiting for. The bags have been packed, the airplane is flying, and Blake Schreck is hiding in baggage the ladies are winging it to Italy. Teresa has admitted she is nervous for the reunion, and she has every right to be. This meeting with Joe could make or break her 20 year marriage. Only time will tell if the Giudices will remain a united front or if Joe will receive divorce papers through international mail. Tre’s sister-in-law Melissa Gorga shared an update on what’s ahead for Teresa and the girls as they make this long-awaited journey.
The clock is ticking and the cameras will be rolling now that Teresa has finally joined her husband in Italy. Her father traveled there last week and has been spending quality time with his son-in-law. But all eyes will be on Teresa to see if Juicy Joe can once again dazzle her with his Jersey charm, or if she gives him the ‘ole, thank u, next treatment.
Melissa shared her feelings on the big event and why Teresa is experiencing great anxiety over this trip. According to Us Weekly, Melissa said, “At this point, they don’t know each other anymore. And they need to get to know each other again.” These two have a lot to work out. Teresa had remained relatively loyal to Joe during his prison stint, but when her mother unexpectedly passed away, her feelings of despair for Joe morphed into blame for the illegal activities.
Melissa went on to share, “It’s only fair to give her that minute to get back together and see how they feel. It’s been a long time. She’s on her way to Italy right now and we’ll see what goes down. That’s a long time to be away from your husband.” Teresa’s old-school values regarding marriage took a hike after she essentially became a single mother to their four children. That said, things change and people evolve, four years is a long time to be separated and clinging to feelings of resentment.
Melissa spoke on the rumors that have been affecting the couple since Joe’s “vacation” began. After being photographed multiple times with a younger man, Teresa has been facing her own cheating allegations. Recently, Juicy and Tre discussed the rumors with Andy Cohen. “And they had a lot of drama. There was a lot going on. There was a lot of rumors on both ends. So we have to see what unfolds,” Melissa said. Joe has previously stated he does believe Teresa has been unfaithful, she continues to deny she has had relations outside of her marriage.
While Teresa has admitted she will probably divorce Joe if he remains in Italy, love isn’t logical and it doesn’t care about anyone’s plans. Teresa and Joe could find they are better off apart and move forward sans drama but with the notion they will remain committed parents. Or Teresa could be struck by Joe’s epic weight loss and fancy MMA moves, and fall into his arms never to leave again.
One thing we know for sure, they won’t be dealing with it privately because they are famewhores cameras will be there to capture every moment. The moral of the story is, crime doesn’t pay, but Bravo will. The aftermath of violating the law is a guaranteed ratings bonanza, regardless of the family trauma involved. Hope the girls have fun seeing their dad and enjoy the time they have with him.

It is hard to believe that it has been three years since Heather Dubrow was a Housewife. The former Real Housewives of Orange County star left the show after five seasons. It is difficult to imagine Heather having any interest in the current casts’ lawsuits, sleazy sex talk, drunk driving charges, bitter divorces and general debauchery. What would Heather think? I bet there would be a lot of “Oh dears” coming from her mouth! And how would she perceive crass Gina Kirschenheiter or needy over-sharer Braunwyn Windham Burke?
Heather gave us many memorable moments on the show–from throwing Shannon Beador out of her house to having a melt-down when the perfect cake at her party was defiled by a guest. Since leaving RHOC, Heather has been focusing on a number of ventures, including co-authoring several books with husband Terry Dubrow. Heather has also hosted her own podcast Heather Dubrow’s World and the fashion-oriented Heather’s Closet on YouTube. Most notably, she has continued her skin care line with Terry, Consult Beaute. Now, Heather is ready to conquer the fashion world.
Yahoo Finance reports that Heather is starting her own fashion line, which will be launched by ShopHQ this spring. They are also offering a special capsule collection that will be out on December 14th, according to the press release. The new line is called Heather’s Closet.
Heather is one of the rare Housewives who has been become even more successful after her time on the show. ShopHQ reports that Heather and Terry’s skin care and supplement line is their most successful health and beauty product. You have to pay for that 22,000 square foot mansion somehow!
Per the press release, “Heather’s Closet is a collection of luxury items designed and curated by Heather Dubrow. Heather truly believes that you shouldn’t have to spend a fortune in order to look and feel your best. Attention to detail, luxury finishes and not compromising on quality are the cornerstones of the brand and what sets it apart from others.”
There is no word on price points, but I would imagine prices would be reasonable as the collection is being sold on a shopping network. Maybe if you wear a Heather outfit, you can imagine that you also live in a huge mansion with Pacific Ocean views–just like Miss Fancy Pants!
The new collection sounds like it will be launched on a rather grand scale. Heather’s Closet will be comprised of a full line of apparel, footwear, handbags and accessories. I don’t think anyone would expect Heather to start a product line with a few tie-dyed polyester t-shirts and rubber flip-flops. I am pretty sure all of her clothing will be perfect for sipping champs while basking in luxury–real or imagined.
Congratulations to Heather on her new business endeavor. It is always nice to see a former Housewife doing well and being successful. And avoiding divorce court, criminal charges and bankruptcy!

On last night’s Real Housewives Of Dallas LeeAnne Locken tied the knot to Rich Emberlin and treated her wedding ceremony like the sideshow act at a carnival. She then treated her wedding guests like they needed to pay for their own corndogs.
LeeAnne also insulted her own mother from the altar, because what better opportunity to say your piece to your mother when she can’t interrupt than during your own wedding vows?!
LeeAnne’s mother, Margaret, did in fact make it to the wedding. Right on time, in fact, and wearing a gold sequined dress. LeeAnne then proceeded to spend the entire ceremony and reception ignoring her. Margaret even had to beg for a photograph with her own daughter!
LeeAnne and Rich wrote their own vows so naturally she took the opportunity to complain about feeling “unloved, unwanted, and abandoned during her childhood” while her mom sat, front-row, eyes shining with happy tears. LeeAnne did all this while wearing a 2 foot tall over-compensating crown on her head with hands as bloated looking as the latex gloves filled with ice the hospital has you put on your vagina after you have a baby. Afterwards Queen Of Delusion breezed right past her family to hop in a Rolls Royce for drive-thru corndog. You can take the girl out of the carnival…
Unloved, unwanted, and abandoned at the church, LeeAnne’s mother told family members that she just wants LeeAnne to realize she was loved and get the f–k over herself! Um, LeeAnne’s entire identity is wrapped up in this fabricated illusion that she was abandoned at the carny like some sort of Little Orphan Annie, so… Also LeeAnne never talks about the grandparents that saved her anymore, so were they deleted from her story too?
With five hours to kill between the ceremony and the weeding LeeAnne wants to get herself some wienie! She means a foot-long chili dog, which she ate standing up so it wouldn’t spill on her $10k dress. Rich wouldn’t let her eat in the car. Who wants hot dog burps, farts, and bloating on your wedding day?
Well, can’t blame her given that she knew that other than the world’s largest charcuterie platter no food would be served at her reception. I guess LeeAnne burned some major bridges with the Dallas catering scene and no one was willing to comp a meal for 1,000?
None of the guests knew this detail, however. Or at least not Stephanie Hollman, Kameron Westcott, and Kary Brittingham who were the only housewives who made it to LeeAnne and Rich’s big day. Cary Deuber was also there. The reception was carnival on acid themed, like think Carnivale in Rio. It featured lots of people dancing in costumes (including LeeAnne), girls doing acrobatics on air-born saddles, and Rich ogling all the women like he didn’t just yoke himself to LeeAnne and her 5 personalities for um, the remainder of the time she’s on Real Housewives Of Dallas.
The only thing this wedding didn’t have was LeeAnne’s gracious attitude and dinner. (Kameron also dished that the bar ran out of water and people had to get it from the bathroom). But it was the happiest day of LeeAnne’s life – a selfish reflection of all the love and adoration LeeAnne craves and feels entitled to, thrown by her for her, at the expense of everyone else. And to those who don’t stay on script about how LeeAnne deserves this after her harrowing childhood, well they get to sit at home and cook their own damn gourmet supper!
I’m talking about D’Andra Simmons and Jermey Lock, who are thrilled to forgo celebrating LeeAnne’s marriage in favor of celebrating their own with a little homegrown Iron Chef competition. Apparently this is foreplay for them. D’Andra loves food more than anything and if Jeremy puts a donut round his unmentionable she will lap it right up. Now we know why he gave her 50 donuts for her birthday!
The theme for the evening is seafood. And D’Andra wins by a point for deep-fried crabs and prawns in curry. For dessert she gets Jeremy. Covered in powdered sugar.
Brandi Redmond was also happy to miss LeeAnne’s wedding and instead spent a blissful weekend at the NFL Draft pick. But now it’s back to reality and reality includes 3 kids who don’t behave with the threat of another one on the way. Brandi and Bryan are conflicted about whether or not to consider adopting Bruin’s future sibling. Bryan, who was the oldest of 4 and remembers a childhood of his mother being too busy with babies to pay attention to him, is firmly against it citing allllllll the practical reasons: two babies at once, they’re already overwhelmed, they’d need a bigger house and car, and Brooklyn is on the cusp of tween, acting out like crazy, and needs A LOT more attention than any baby.
Unfortunately, Brandi’s heart is telling her this the right thing to do. Well, I haven’t seen a baby pop up on her instagram so either she’s hiding another baby from Kameron, or they went with the sane choice of staying in close contact with the other adoptive family so they can get these biological siblings together without having to take on a fourth child.
Over at Stephanie’s house, we learn that Travis has a jacuzzi in his bedroom and likes to sit in there to fart unnoticed and inoffensively. Of course he does. Travis is heading to Thailand to check on his ailing father and the Hollman companies they also have there, and pretends this is the peeeeeeeeerfect opportunity for Stephanie and her girlfriends, the women he loves and adores, to join them! I wonder if this is about the time Cary D found out she wasn’t making the cut? Sptehanie is like OMG – what a super idea, we’ll leave right after your 50th birthday party which we’re also pretending we haven’t planned at all even though hahahahah it’s happening tomorrow.
Stephanie calls up all the girls, including LeeAnne, and miracles of miracles they can ALL go in two weeks time with zero regard to kids, failing businesses, new marriages, floundering marriages, and Global Pet Expos. Seriously what is Kameron going to eat in Thailand? Noodles, I guess? She should bring some boxes of Kraft Mac N Cheese just in case. Remember that crazy chef Mila from Below Deck Mediterranean? Kameron would be thrilled if they chartered a yacht and she was there to make them boxed pancakes and put Hidden Valley ranch on a chicken tender sandwich.
Kameron is frankly surprised she was even invited given all her issues with Stephanie, but counts this as an important step forward in Stephanie proving her worth to Kameron, aka sucking up until Kameron’s mental image of Stephanie is no longer the word “surface” with grime smeared on it.
Stephanie, too, has her doubts that this trip will help her reconnect with Kameron, but there will elephants and maybe they like pink dog food? Stephanie also thinks LeeAnne and D’Andra will be getting along like donuts and jelly on this trip. After being starved and held prisoner at LeeAnne’s wedding, she is clearly suffering from lack of food affecting her brain functioning.
Lastly, Kary and Eduardo go out to dinner and oh boy is this a marriage that is one step away from a vow renewal followed by a divorce. All Kary wants to talk about is her pretend jewelry line and act like it’s a legit business, but Eduardo is like ‘I am not here to be your free ad campaign for a fake company…’ so he keeps interrupting to discuss things that actually exist. Like his mother, who happens to presently be hiking across Spain. Kary does not care at all, and tells Eduardo as much, but I actually really wanted to hear more about the mother’s trip. So thanks Kary for ruining everything: My voyeuristic dinner, Eduardo’s actual dinner, and probably your mother-in-law’s opinion of you!
Kary and Eduardo bicker over feeling unheard and disconnected from their marriage and he is clearly annoyed that she up and decided to go to the Real Housewives of Dallas cast trip without discussing it with him first. I mean, we know she probably planned this months ago, but we’re pretending the phone call invite from Stephanie happened as they were standing on the steps of the restaurant. Where Kary said “YES” immediately without even acknowledging that Eduardo exists. When he presses her on all the girls’ trips she’s taking lately, she smirks that she can’t live without them because they are “like therapy” to her. With all LeeAnne’s meltdowns and suicide threats and histrionics over her childhood, she is not wrong. They are exactly like group therapy. Especially since Stephanie used to be a counselor.
Eduardo does not look convinced. Kary feels trapped in her marriage, with Eduardo holding all the purse strings, but he sure lets them out when she decides she wants to do last-minute international travel! I wonder how far her jewelry line would get her?

Brace yourselves! The Real Housewives of New Jersey are BACK! Teresa Giudice, Melissa Gorga, Dolores Catania, Margaret Josephs, Jackie Goldschneider, and Jennifer Aydin are ready to stir up more drama. Don’t worry, Jersey’s favorite villain Danielle Staub is back too. The Jersey ladies had a banner season last year, so this is likely to be the most explosive yet.
A lot of drama is rumored to surround the marriage between Teresa and Joe Giudice. What a crazy ride it’s been between those two! It’ll also be interesting to see what happens next between Danielle and Margaret. How do you move on after you push someone’s husband in a pool? Jackie and Jennifer were great additions last year, so hopefully, they bring it this season yet again.
It’s cool that Margaret is a cool enough boss to let her employee bring her child to work. A lot of employers would scoff at that idea. Kudos to the powerhouse in pigtails!
How weird is it that Dolores and her boyfriend David Principe are actually spending time together? It’s great for their relationship, but it was getting doubtful he was real. Being busy is fine, but they’re like never together.
It’s a little strange that Frank Catania is going to build a house for him, but modern families are all the rage. Dolores has the best of both worlds with these two men in her life.
It’s so crazy how old Melissa’s kids have gotten! We’ve seen them grow up so much over the last seven years! It’s also so inspiring how Melissa has transformed into such a boss at business. Envy has grown so much since its inception.
Joe Gorga talks with Melissa about the cheating allegations facing Teresa. Obviously, Melissa and Joe don’t believe that Teresa and this man are just friends.
Melissa reveals that Teresa called and apologized for how she behaved at the reunion. That’s good to hear because Teresa came in so hot at the reunion for no reason.
I want to not like Jennifer, but she’s kind of fabulous. She says that her husband is coming around more and being more romantic.
He seemed really distant last season, so it’s nice that he’s making an effort. It’s unsettling to hear her call herself a trophy wife, but nothing about their relationship is conventional.
They’re planning a patient appreciation party for his business. She has the most over the top events, so it’ll be incredible. Hopefully, she invites all of the ladies and we get this drama going!
How old does it make you feel that Gia Giudice is going to college? WILD. Joe only has a week left of his prison term, but he’s going into ICE custody right away. That’s rough.
If you commit a crime and aren’t a citizen, you can be deported. He’s choosing to stay because if he goes to Italy now he can never come back. Gia says if Joe gets chooses Italy, she will sever ties with him.
That’s so sad that a family is being torn apart by this. Gia is taking no prisoners when it comes to her father. He missed out on so many milestone moments of her life, so this is tough on her. SO emotional watching the toll this has taken on all of them.
Jennifer gets so excited about plastic surgery. I want to be that excited about something. All of the ladies are coming to the party, but Jackie might skip. UH OH. TROUBLE IS ON THE WAY.
Jackie versus Jennifer round 2! I’m here for it! Teresa filmed a video of Jennifer mocking Jackie, and the peace is over. They’ve become close friends over the last few months, and now all of the progress is derailed.
Jackie accuses Jennifer of cyberbullying which is probably taking it a little far. It’s rude, but I’m not sure it would cross until the bullying category.
Jackie believes that Jennifer is desperate to be Teresa’s friend. The topic turns to Teresa’s alleged new boyfriend, but Melissa shuts it down. She doesn’t want people to be gossiping about her sister-in-law at the table.
Honestly, that’s for the best. It took Teresa and Melissa YEARS to get to this good place they’re in. Melissa is smart to avoid any new conflict. The last thing that family needs is more drama.
However, it’s interesting to note how quick Margaret was to bring up all rumors about Teresa. Foreshadowing some future issues between the two? Time will tell.
Teresa’s building a beautiful new pool for her daughters. She knows it won’t take their pain away, but it will help them feel better. Dolores looks GREAT. She is absolutely slaying lately. LOVE.
Gia says she picked a college close to home in case her father might be coming home. Joe’s appeal is costing Teresa a ton of money, but she wants to do anything she can.
Her connection with Joe is nonexistent at this point. Dolores notices it as well. The love is just not there anymore.
Dolores tells Teresa that Margaret reached out to her about the rumors regarding cheating. She pinned it all on Jackie, but Margaret definitely mentioned it as well. That’s not really fair to throw Jackie under the bus like that. I LOVE Margaret, but that was sketch.
It’s party time! I wonder if Jackie is actually going to show up. Hopefully, no glasses get thrown at this event.
Jackie’s in the car, so obviously she’s going. If she can go in calm and collected, they might be able to resolve the issue. Jersey tempers are usually the worst, so it’ll probably be a disaster.
Teresa’s livid that Melissa hasn’t reached out to her about the rumors Jackie is spreading. These women are allowing Jackie to get in the way of their peace. Why though? Don’t let random Jackie drama ruin the progress.
Dolores points out that Teresa is ready to come after Jackie, and something’s going down. Maybe glasses WILL be thrown tonight after all. At least Danielle isn’t around. That would be the ultimate form of adding fuel to the fire.
Margaret tells Teresa the video making fun of Jackie came across “mean girl.” Teresa is still harping about the random comment about Joe being in jail from last season. Let it go, sweetie. It wasn’t even a bad comment. HE WAS IN JAIL. That’s a fact.
Jackie and Jennifer are finally facing off to address the video, and they both have an attitude. If two people approach a situation with this mentality, it’s not going to go well.
Jackie feels like Jennifer did the video as a way to impress Teresa. Things go left quickly with Jackie and Jennifer when Jennifer puts her finger in Jackie’s face.
Jackie was smirking so it’s easy to see why Jennifer found her condescending. However, things would be so much easier if Jennifer just apologized for the video. Don’t offer up a million excuses. Just say “I’m sorry” PERIOD.
It’s when everyone adds the extra stuff that drama blows up tenfold. Jennifer follows Jackie around the party trying to continue the fight. Teresa flips out on Melissa for not shutting down Jackie, but Melissa explains that she did. Jennifer doesn’t feel as if she did anything wrong.
Margaret thankfully diffuses that situation, but now Jackie has to face Teresa. They both accuse the other one of talking about the other, so no progress was made.
If THIS is how The Real Housewives of New Jersey is going to be all season, WOAH is the only word I have.
JOE IS FREE. He calls Teresa to say that everything at ICE is HORRIBLE. This is bad. Very very bad. Cheers to a new season I guess!

Survivor paid tribute to one if its own on Wednesday, Nov. 6 episode. In the installment, the long-running CBS reality competition series featured a memorial card dedicated to the late Rudy...Kellee started a conversation about sexism on Survivor and upended the game with her Island of the Idols immunity idol—and that was just the beginning.

With tonight’s episode in the books, Survivor: Island of the Idols has reached the merge…and by nearly all measures, this has been one heck of a pre-merge season. This last pre-merge episode in particular was a pretty entertaining one to watch, culminating not only in a surprising Tribal Council, but a thoughtful and meaningful one that encapsulates everything that has made this show relevant going into its 20th year on the air.
Like a worm on Jack‘s head, we’re going to slowly slither into this one, because there’s a whole heck of a lot to get to…so get comfy.
As I do at the beginning of every recap, please heed the following: Remember that this recap assumes that you have already seen this week’s episode of Survivor: Island of the Idols. If you have not and don’t want to be spoiled, please come back later! It’s important to add that while we WILL hit on all of the important developments of the episode, this is not a linear “blow-by-blow” recap. It is more of a discussion and reaction of what we just witnessed together.

Before we get into this week’s episode, I think it’s only appropriate that we take a moment to remember one Rudy Ernst Boesch. The original Season 1 break-out cast member and former Navy SEAL died this past week at the age of 91, reportedly from complications stemming from Alzheimer’s Disease. Without Rudy, it’s undeniable that Survivor’s inaugural season would not have been the success that it was, which in turn launched the entire Reality Competition Show genre of television. He could have damn-well been the show’s first winner, with only a momentary hand-slip at the final Immunity Challenge costing him the assured million bucks he would have won had he made it to Final Two (Kelly Wigglesworth ultimately voted Rudy out at Final Three, to sit next to eventual winner Richard Hatch). When he returned to compete for a second-time for Survivor: All-Stars in 2004, he became – at age 75 – the oldest contestant to ever play Survivor, a record he still holds today.
It’s almost impossible to imagine his gruff, blunt personality on TV today…the cultural landscape has shifted so much that I wonder how some of his comments would be seen nowadays. But he was and is one of the icons of Survivor, one of the most beloved contestants to ever play the game, and a true American hero and patriot. Rest easy, Rudy.
Being reminded of Rudy‘s gameplay this week really made me think about how far the show has come, and how great it still can be as a social experiment and microcosm. It’s fitting that tonight’s newest episode was exciting, funny, suspenseful and ended with an incredibly poignant conversation about gender bias in the wake of things like the #MeToo movement that are happening out in the real world. For the second time in as many weeks, Jamal found himself in the center of the conversation, addressing an important topic in a way that was respectful, thoughtful and tonight, even humble. Kellee and then Janet made some fantastic points about gender biases that exist, some within the game of Survivor, which of course, reflects the greater society at large. I hope everyone was listening and paying attention during Tribal Council. For me, I welcome these types of conversations and I’m not sure there’s any other reality show on television that can so seamlessly address these vital issues facing our current culture.
But there was also a lot of game to be played. What do you all think of Kellee‘s decision to keep Dean around by giving him her hidden Idol? Risky – or “a calculated risk” – doesn’t even begin to describe this decision for me…it seems like there was a much easier way to get out Jack if that’s in fact what Kellee had wanted to do. I understand the disappointment of not getting to play an Idol (being that it would have expired after tonight’s Tribal), but that isn’t reason enough to do what she did. Now, mind you, it made for great TV and it was fun to watch play out. In some ways – just like on Big Brother this past season – I don’t really like that there is some sort of connection between Dean and Kellee outside of the game that led her to want to protect Dean in the game (that seems unfair to me). But I feel like her move was a bit short-sighted, and honing in on what Boston Rob and Sandra were trying to teach this week, it wasn’t a very good risk/reward.
Think about it. So Kellee saves Dean, which on the surface would mean that Dean must owe Kellee something. He doesn’t. Even if it does buy Kellee some loyalty, Dean has now been given the power over Kellee, in that he knows that it was Kellee’s Idol…a fact that Kellee probably wouldn’t want others to know. For example, what would others think of Kellee if Dean were to tell them that the Idol he played was given to him by Kellee on the down-low? It even was suspicious immediately when he played it…Noura questioned out loud why, if Dean had an Idol, didn’t he play it the previous Tribal? Kellee weaved a lie that she didn’t need to make, all to save Dean? It just doesn’t seem to make all that much sense.
What made even less sense, however, was Jamal playing his Idol at all. What in the heck was he trying to accomplish with that play? Once Dean was safe, Jamal at the very least should have feared for himself, so why play it on Noura? Even if he would have “guessed right” and the other votes had been put on Noura, it would have erased all of the votes, which means they would have entered into a re-vote situation, with both Noura and Dean having safety. That would have then left Jamal exposed during that re-vote. If anything, it may earn Jamal some lasting trust with Noura and his alliance, but that trust is nothing compared to what it might have meant for his game moving forward had he held on to that Idol.
All of this, of course, comes back to this week’s theme of making “calculated risks. Kudos to Janet for becoming the first player to turn down an offer at the Island of the Idols…that power did seem interesting, but especially because it’s one that we’ve never seen before on the show (“power without safety,” allowing her safety at a Tribal but having to leave Tribal with no vote as well), it made her choice all the more risky. Plus, considering she is in a pretty good spot at the moment, it was probably best not to rock the boat…although if she keeps flashing her breasts at the local boat captains, they might have trouble keeping things steady…
Some other seeds that were planted and nurtured tonight? Lauren loses trust in Missy, which might end up being important come the merge, and we also learn that Lauren and Tommy are an extremely tight duo. But to Missy’s credit, she sees right through them when they try to throw Dan under the bus. I’m continuously impressed with Missy’s in-game awareness…not that she’s playing the perfect game, but she is definitely one to watch, and it appears from the previews that she may have a tough road ahead if she’s already popping up on everyone else’s radar. Oh, and Dan’s “creepiness” continues to be an issue
Episode Take-Away: It was another good one! We learned that Jack is our first jury member, which means we’ll be seeing all of these faces each and every episode all the way through the Survivor Finale, which by the way was officially announced this week as being on Wednesday, December 18th (mark your calendars!). There are now 13 players left in the game, with a 7-6 split in favor of the original Vokai (purple) tribe…8-5 if you consider that Karishma‘s former tribe is dead to her.
The Island of the Idols may start to becoming a major factor, and as we know from history, the first vote after the merge is often times the most exhilarating of the entire season, with the merge episode itself usually ranking as the best episode of the season as well. We’ve seen some wild, unpredictable gameplay, but we have yet to see anyone show off some “great” gameplay…will this be a sloppy, unpredictable ride to the finish line or will some puppet-master step up and start orchestrating his/her own fate?
