Survivor: Game Changers Recap: We, Me and Cirie

It's Not a High Without a Low

It's Not a High Without a Low

Michaela had a big night tonight, full of quotable one-liners. But her line at Tribal Council, that this is a “we” game until the moment it becomes a “me” game speaks to the underlying heart of this competition show. Jeff Probst reacted to this statement with a grin and a “wow,” knowing that this young spit-fire just pretty much summed up Survivor in a nut shell.

There were some beers, tears and cheers on tonight’s “loved ones” episode (and maybe even a few jeers), but before we get ahead of ourselves, make sure you know that there are spoilers to follow, so only proceed if you have seen Episode 12 of Survivor: Game Changers. And while we WILL hit on all of the important developments, remember that this is more of a discussion and analysis and not a blow-by-blow account of how the episode played out.

It's Not a High Without a Low

Yes, like the wave that snuck up on Jeff Probst and knocked him over (still one of my favorite moments of “Millennials vs. Gen-X“), this game continued its unpredictability tonight, as nobody can seem to find their footing this season (see what I did there?  Ahem…). Right after Sarah flipped the game by voting out Zeke last week, the tide seemed to turn for a minute…but it ended up being a classic Survivor fake-out. Michaela was at the center of it all, first angrily kicking the Reward Challenge itself after losing and then ultimately finding herself sitting pretty as the swing vote – along with Tai – by the episode’s end. Like Sarah did in week’s past, she faced a tough cross-roads in the game and wasn’t sure which way to go. But I’m here to explain that it appears she made the wrong move tonight in voting out Sierra instead of Andrea…it all started at the “loved ones” Reward Challenge.

The tried-and-true “loved ones” challenge usually brings forth groans or sobs, depending on how in touch one is with their own emotions. I’ll admit that I get a little…shall we say, “allergic”…sometimes when watching these emotional moments. I’m a family man and not one to hold back my feelings…add to that, that we were raised as huggers, kissers, talkers and criers (if you’re Italian like me, you’ll understand). I can only imagine what it would be like to be away – with no contact whatsoever – from all of my loved ones for over a month. The mere sight of a loved one after all that time…I’m just sayin’ I understand the emotion.

It's Not a High Without a Low

At the same time, I totally get the eye-rolls. Sometimes the “loved ones” challenge is pure cheese, or in some cases in seasons’ past, have led to uncomfortable exchanges or insights into certain players. The rarest of rare “loved ones” challenges actually impact the game strategically, as it did with the famous Jonny Fairplay “sick grandma” lie that led to him getting much further into the game than he might have otherwise. At its best, it’s a reminder to us at home that these are real people and often times it is very interesting to see these players act “real” around people they can be themselves around.

It's Not a High Without a Low

For some reason, tonight’s rendition didn’t strike me as cheesy at all…and in fact, it was pretty powerful. I for one, did not know that Andrea had lost a sister, and then moments later, seeing Aubry and her sister talk about the important bond between siblings…my allergies started acting up. Sarah broke down at the sight of her husband (which led to Sierra awkwardly announcing how hot she thought he was). Michaela cried at the sight of her mom, Candy. Sierra’s dad reminded her to remain thick-skinned in the face of adversity. We got to meet Tai‘s partner, Mark (now we know who that chicken was named after…). Troyzan embraced his older brother, Todd (Todd-zan?). We learned that Cirie missed her son, Jerry’s, graduation to play Survivor this time around. And Monica Culpepper! What a sight for sore eyes…speaking of sore eyes, there wasn’t a dry eye in my house at least when Brad seemed to melt into his wife’s arms.

It's Not a High Without a Low

But despite all of the love and emotion, the “loved ones” challenge didn’t seem to have much strategic impact on the game. Perhaps the only thing that can be pulled from it was a bit of foreshadowing, when Monica – a former two-time player herself who made it all 39 days of “Survivor: Blood vs. Water” – told her husband to pull in Michaela, whom she picked up on was not that happy with her place in the game (evident by her kicking the challenge). As we saw in the preview for next week, it looks like Brad and Michaela end up going to war against one another, instead of working together like Monica suggested.

It seemed the biggest development from the “loved ones” challenge was not who got to spend time with their loved one, but who was left behind. Tai, Sierra, Michaela and Troyzan looked like they were going to flip the game and vote out Andrea after they were left back at camp together. Tai you may recall, was basically back-stabbed last week when his allies Brad, Troyzan and Sierra all threw votes his way. If Tai and Michaela were to join forces, along with Brad, Sierra and Troyzan, they would have enough votes to take back control of the game. To me, it seemed to be a great strategic move for Michaela, but it seems like she was swayed by…who else…Sarah.

It's Not a High Without a Low

Yes Sarah. She’s been the power player and out-front this entire season and here again, her personal relationship-building paid off for her. Even though she voted for Sierra, Sierra still gave her the “Legacy Advantage” which she had found during Episode 1…it gives the person Immunity at six players left in the game. Sierra had told Sarah about this in confidence, but Sarah used this knowledge to sway Michaela to vote Sierra out. It was a win-win for Sarah because not only did she not have to create any waves this week by going along with the person that Andrea and Cirie were targeting (Andrea, after Brad won the Immunity Challenge), but she knew that Sierra would will her the “Legacy Advantage.” The rub with this is that now Michaela knows about this power, and she’ll know that someone must have it moving forward…if she gets to talking with Cirie, whom she has been shown as being close with, Cirie could surmise that it is Sarah who is now in possession of the Legacy Advantage and that could make Sarah an even bigger threat. Man I love this game!

Speaking of Cirie, let me get it out of the way once again: CIRIE IS THE MOST DANGEROUS PERSON IN THIS GAME. I’ve been saying it – in all caps no less – for weeks people. We saw tonight that she is safely tucked in-between the larger threat Andrea and the goat, Aubry (sorry Aubry, I love ya but you’ve done nothing this season). Now with eight players left, she is nearing the point in the game where others SHOULD be worried about sitting next to her at the end, although we have not heard even a peep about her from the remainder of the cast. The “Next Time On” revealed that she will face a critical decision next week, and I feel like this decision might be blindsiding Michaela…she is someone that has rubbed everyone the wrong way and who apparently has a huge blow-up with Brad next week. It’s just speculation, but I think the preview showed that Michaela could be in trouble next week…

It's Not a High Without a Low

Episode Take-Away: …That of course means another week that someone OTHER than Cirie will go home. We inch one week closer to the May 24th Finale, and it is looking more and more like Cirie’s game to lose. Don’t forget that there are still three Immunity Idols still in play (Tai with two and Troyzan with one), in addition to Sarah currently holding the Legacy Advantage. As the numbers in the game shrink, these advantages become more and more important moving forward. But tonight I think spelled things out nicely: You have Cirie who is subtly controlling this game with Andrea out-front to take the hits and Aubry tucked in her back pocket. You have Tai and Michaela who had a big chance to take control of the game but who continue to sit pat and do nothing. Then you have Brad and Troyzan who are nearing the point where they have to win challenges in order to survive (Troyzan’s Idol does give him room for a mulligan). That leaves Sarah, still a huge factor and threat to win this game, but who will find herself with no real allies the deeper she goes. My hope? That Sarah wakes up very soon to the reality that Cirie cannot be allowed to get to the end, and tries to lead a coup against her and Andrea. It may be her only real chance of going to the end, because let’s face it, there is no way Cirie is going to let Sarah get there.

Strategic Move of the Week: This goes to Sarah, for her persuasion of Michaela, leveraging the knowledge of Sierra‘s Legacy Advantage in order to convince her to vote Sierra out.

Voted out this week: Sierra

Won Immunity: Brad Culpepper

Vote: No Idols or advantages played. 6 – Sierra (Andrea, Cirie, Aubry, Tai, Michaela, Sarah), 3 – Andrea (Brad, Troyzan, Sierra)

Next Week’s Episode: It looks like tensions reach a breaking-point between Brad and Michaela, and Cirie is forced to make a game-changing decision. It’s the LAST regular episode of the season leading up to the two-hour Finale and Live Reunion Show on May 24.

Important Note! Remember to return right here to RealityTea for my FilmSurvivor Podcast Thursday, where you can listen to my full exit interview with Sierra. Ramona Singer Dishes On Almost Missing Her Surprise Birthday Party

Ramona.Singer.Blackhalter.Headback.RHONY

Ramona.Singer.Blackhalter.Headback.RHONY

Watching that last Real Housewives of New York episode, I couldn’t help getting vicariously nervous that Ramona Singer was going to miss her own birthday party. Sure, it was a surprise party so Ramona had no idea that she was messing up the plans by double booking that night. It was just pretty obnoxious that she couldn’t spend time with Dorinda Medley without having the backup plan of going out to dinner with a random whose name she couldn’t remember.

Nevertheless, she made it to the party, seemed genuinely touched, and Dorinda was able to pull off the surprise. I have no idea how Ramona didn’t see it coming after her conversation with Carole Radziwill, but Ramona wasn’t paying attention- as per usual- which was actually a good thing this one time.

Ramona didn’t get into too much drama during that last episode, so she didn’t have a lot to address in her Bravo blog entry, but she was pumped about the party. Needless to say it was far from a juicy read.

Ramona said, “I still can’t believe that I just celebrated such a major milestone birthday in my life! I am so fortunate to have friends that I love and that wanted to share that day/evening with me.”

She continued,  “Friends are so dear to me, and I cherish them so much. Dorinda really knew how to keep this secret going, even though Carole made a little faux pas! It’s a good thing that both of us are kind of clueless sometimes and speak the language of confusion! It worked this time…and I was totally surprised.” Well, yeah. Listening has never been Ramona’s strength, but thankfully it all worked out this time.

Ramona kept humble bragging about how sought after she was that night: “I really almost didn’t go, as I had this date. Yes, I do sometimes book more than one activity in the same night! Dorinda was late, and I was getting so stressed about traveling all the way to Chelsea! When I got off the elevator, I was shocked! Wow, surprise!” Oh, Ramona.

Kelly Bensimon Complains About Carole Radziwill Making RHONY About Politics – Says It’s “Tacky” and “Rude”

Kelly Bensimon

Kelly Bensimon

Did she or didn’t she? Vote for Trump that is! Kelly Bensimon frankly doesn’t give a damn who Ramona Singer voted for. Furthermore, she thinks Carole Radziwill making a big deal out of her co-stars politics is “tacky.” And we know how Kelly is up here with her head in the clouds, so what she thinks matters.

Pointing out the obvious, Kelly scoffed that Real Housewives Of New York is “not the New York Times” and has no business getting involved politics.

“I don’t know Carole at all,” Kelly added, “but I just think slamming anyone for their political views is tacky.” Instead Kelly suggested that Carole use this as a learning opportunity – not a judging one!

CLICK THE CONTINUE READING BUTTON FOR MORE!

“I think we all have to remember it’s reality TV,” continued Kelly. “It’s really not legitimate, so for us to be having those kinds of conversations on reality TV, I think that’s tacky. It’s just tacky.”

RELATED – DID Ramona Vote Trump?!

Kelly does make an exception, however – for charity. “Unless they were, like, doing something really amazing or they were making an impact, that might be a different story. But just to talk and argue about it?” she told Us Weekly. “It’s rude. It’s very uneducated.”

Since Kelly has been the victim of ‘systematic bullying,’ she is sensitive to anyone being harassed for their beliefs. After the election, a few tweets she made “about respecting our new president” earned her a tongue lashing. “So I really just like to keep my politics to myself now.”

Kelly’s advice for countering political opposition is to approach the situation with respect. “The only thing that I can really say and that I constantly repeat is that it’s about what you do every single day. You’re your own politician.”

RELATED – Carole Thinks It’s Important To Bring Politics Into Reality TV

While I want to say that Kelly should keep all her words to herself, I do think she makes a fair point in this instance. We are talking about women who can spend a season arguing about copycat hair styles. Or is this a relevant representation of life imitating art considering how contentious the election was and continues to be?

Personally, I prefer my reality TV to be tacky in the way of bad etiquette dramas or silly feuds about pinot and vacations and would appreciate if Housewives stayed out of ALL super personal issues like health detectives, drug and alcohol addiction, outing affairs, meddling with the law, accusations about rape, or well, Trump. I watch Real Housewives to get a break from all the drama of the ‘real world’.

Survivor: Game Changers Episode 12 Preview: ‘It Is Not A High Without A Low’

It's Not a High Without a Low

It's Not a High Without a Low

You always can tell we’re nearing the end of a season of Survivor when we get to the classic “loved ones” challenge. Well, we’ve reached that point as of tonight. Love it or hate it (I’ve felt both emotions in past seasons, sometimes simultaneously), the “loved ones” episode is always powerful and emotionally charged and usually acts as a catalyst for at least one Survivor to re-focus and will themselves to the end of the game.

To get caught up before heading into tonight’s new episode – you can access last week’s podcast here. You can also read last week’s recap here.

Reinventing How This Game Is Played

Yeah, last week – for me anyways – ended on somewhat of a bummer. As I was putting together my recap/reaction late Wednesday night, I was notified by CBS that I would not be getting my usual exit interview, because Zeke Smith had requested a “lighter” press day in light of all of the national press he received earlier in the season (you know, when Varner outed him as transgender on national TV). I pressed to at least be able to email him a few questions, to which CBS agreed to allow me to send over just one question. Alas, a week later, and I never got a response back even on that one question (for the record, I had decided to ask him a game question instead of bombarding him with another transgender-specific question, since I feel he pretty much answered all of those questions in his op-ed piece for The Hollywood Reporter…which by the way, is a great read if you haven’t read it already).

So long-story short: I guess I won’t be interviewing Zeke anytime soon.

It's Not a High Without a Low

The good news is that my exit interviews will resume this week starting with the person who goes home tonight, and with the way this season has been shaping up, it’s anybody’s guess as to whom that might be. Here is the official synopsis straight from the horse’s mouth (that horse being named “CBS“):

“It Is Not a High Without a Low” – An emotional reward challenge brings loved ones together and one castaway receives invaluable advice from their special visitor, on SURVIVOR, Wednesday, May 10 (8:00-9:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network.

Following up on last week, the first thing we may find out about tonight is how Tai took to seeing his name written down by the rest of his current allies. Tai, as we know, is usually over-sensitive and can be super-paranoid, so this may not sit well with him at all…and with two Idols to spend, Tai could become an important figure during tonight’s episode. Of course, the spotlight has been on Sarah quite heavily these past few weeks, so it continues to be interesting to see if her moves will push her to the end or reveal themselves to be the wrong moves for her game. Andrea and Cirie really sit in the position of power, with just nine players remaining, and if Sarah truly has picked their side to align with, the target tonight might be squarely on the backs of either Culpepper or Sierra.

It's Not a High Without a Low

Remember as I say every week: Be sure that you’re watching the Ponderosa Videos on CBS.com for additional insight on those voted out of the game thus far (who have made the jury). And please, check back here for my full recap/reaction to tonight’s “loved ones” episode. You won’t want to miss the newest edition of the FilmSurvivor Podcast right here at RealityTea on Thursday, where I will be speaking with the contestant (and fifth member of the jury) voted out of Survivor: Game Changers. The best way to get all of my Survivor coverage and movie reviews is to follow me on Twitter – @tomsantilli – or on Facebook.

TELL US – WILL TAI BE OK WITH HIS NAME GETTING WRITTEN DOWN? WILL ANYBODY MAKE A PLAY AGAINST CIRIE? WHOSE LOVED ONE WILL HAVE THE BIGGEST IMPACT ON THE GAME?

Porsha Williams And Phaedra Parks Haven’t Spoken Since RHOA Reunion; Porsha Says She Lost A Best Friend

Porsha Williams and Phaedra Parks

Porsha Williams and Phaedra Parks

Say good-bye to Frick & Frack because Porsha Williams and Phaedra Parks are officially on-record broken. Porsha confirms that she hasn’t spoken to Phaedra since to the Real Housewives Of Atlanta reunion, and doesn’t plan to anytime soon.

“Right now, I just can’t talk to her,” explains Porsha. Porsha feels she can no longer trust Phaedra after learning about the lies spread about Kandi Burruss‘ alleged intention to drug and rape her. Porsha claims she still hasn’t processed being used and manipulated by Phaedra, someone she considered “like my best friend.”

Phaedra was “someone I talked to on the phone every single day. And for me to feel like she had betrayed me like that, and the fact that I was sitting right there and watched her continue to lie on me about it, that’s the part I can’t get past,” shares Porsha, “and I don’t know if I ever will.”

Porsha admits she has a “soft spot” for Phaedra, and perhaps someday they can move past what happened, but it will take a while. There doesn’t seem to be an immediate need considering that Phaedra was reportedly fired from RHOA. “I may get to the point where I’m strong enough to where I can talk to her and maybe we can work it out,” says Porsha. But for fear that she may “get manipulated again,” she doesn’t “want to hear anymore of it right now.”

“I’m not throwing everything on Phaedra,” Porsha continues. “I apologized because I just hated to even play a part in it at all. I talked about some things. I said some things. Kandi said some things. So I apologized.”

Speaking of Kandi, Porsha doesn’t expect forgiveness or a friendship, but she does want to make sure Kandi knows how badly she feels. “Am I looking for a friendship? No, not at all,” she tells ET. “Some people you want to be friends with them again. Some people you are just like, ‘I’m going to let that stay where it’s at.'” Is that … a grown-up perspective there?! Where’s Porsha?

Below Deck Mediterranean Recap: Bruised Ego, Bro?

Below Deck Mediterranean Recap

Below Deck Mediterranean Recap

Despite all the drama Below Deck Mediterranean was teasing at the end of last week’s premiere, I still expected at least a few more episodes of smooth sailing until we saw anything major happen between the crew. But this week blew that assumption right out of the water as we were treated to Bobby Giancola’s weird game of cat and mouse with pretty much anyone who has a vagina.

Lord help you if Bobby has you in his sights because he will latch on like the overly tattooed python he is and attempt to squeeze every last ounce of refusal out of you and make you his woman. The only lady willing to stand up to this menacing goon is Chief Steward and defender of helpless female deckhands everywhere, Hannah Ferrier. Say what you want about Hannah being stuck up or annoying, when it comes to helping a sister out, she is right there, ready for battle like Wonder Woman (in a yachting outfit).

Below Deck Mediterranean Recap

But before I delve too deep in what that’s all about, we start this episode back at the lunch on the beach the crew has set up for their female empowered guests, The Tribe.

Captain Sandy Yawn is trying to do some empowerment of her own by showing Deck Hand/Coveted Prize of All Male Crewmembers, Malia White how to handle the dinghy. An impatient Hannah forces a grin and tries to speed this up so they can serve the guests but the truth is, she’s already on edge about how much Captain Sandy is micromanaging her and wondering how she will make it through the charter season. While Hannah isn’t interested making any impression, newbie Lauren Cohen is set on proving to Hannah that she isn’t just some bimbo Bobby picked up on the off season. Isn’t she though? Either way, Lauren wants to make sure Hannah knows she has more use than just being Bobby’s former fling. I’m still wondering what Bravo casting agent agreed to put Lauren on the ship after a recommendation from the guy who uses tickets to Watch What Happens Live as a way to get ass.

Speaking of, let’s talk about that for a second. Last week after the premiere, if you happened to catch Hannah and Bobby on WWHL, you were in for a real treat. A stunned Andy Cohen didn’t even need to orchestrate any shade as these two ripped each other to shreds – Hannah saying Bobby is a douche (he is) for hooking up with too many women and using invites to the show as a way to get more hook ups. Even Andy yelled at Bobby for bringing strange women to his set. In turn, Bobby lobbed the only thing back at Hannah he could think of – that she was holding a grudge because he rejected her romantically last season! HA HA HA! No really, I am SOL (snorting out loud) at this. If anyone is familiar with rejection, it would be Bobby, who was downright embarrassing himself last season on how many times he professed his love to Julia, who had a boyfriend (and still does).

Below Deck Mediterranean Recap

But I digress, so back to this episode. As the day wears on, the crew readies a themed night of belly dancing and ummm, tribal stuff? The Tribe uses makeup to paint tribe-y strips on themselves and one guest just gave up and face planted in glitter because she comes to the table with a big splotch of what I can only assume is lipstick and eye shadow smeared across her forehead. If these ladies wanted true tribal makeup, all they had to do was stare into one of Bobby’s arm tattoos for guidance.

In the kitchen, Hannah is sweating the fact that Chef Adam Glick overcooked the main fish course and threw it out to start over. Adam isn’t sweating at all, which unnerves Hannah further. While Hannah admits she’s happy they are getting along so well, despite the great offense of Adam wearing Crocs in the kitchen, she also says there is something she can’t put her finger on when it comes to him. Anyone who wears rubber shoes with no style must have a close eye kept on them!

Above deck, the Deck Hands are being kept more than busy trying to drop anchor by the rocks and Bobby messes up the anchor after his little pea brain can’t keep up with what five minus three is. The boat’s engineer is called in to fix the overextended anchor chain and Captain Sandy decides to cut Bobby a break for being a set of biceps with a head.

Below Deck Mediterranean Recap

Bobby’s inability to focus on his job was likely because he was busy using his other head to figure out how he can get into Malia’s pants. In his twisted mind, there is only one thing standing in his way and that’s Hannah. He assumes that because Hannah and Malia are sharing a room, they will do what girls do – you know, “bicker, chipper, girl talk” about him all night long! This is especially dangerous because in his mind, Hannah is hell bent on no one having him unless she can, so she is going to ruin all his chances with Malia out of jealous spite. In Bobby’s world, a woman can’t simply NOT be into him.

So, some more things happen on the boat with the guests, like jet skis and food and taking pictures doing the splits on the Croatian coast line, yadda yadda yadda, let’s get back to the drama.

The team manages to dock the Sirocco without issue. Well, almost – Malia was in her room and the escape hatch door fell into the shower door, covering her in glass shards. While they try and clean her up, Hannah gets Malia to another room to strip down so she can start showering the glass off her. Bobby, springing into EMT mode, insists on seeing Malia immediately to assess the damage, even though he just had in the kitchen.

Below Deck Mediterranean Recap

Before he can suggest CPR or something equally ridiculous, Hannah pushes back, telling Bobby she’s not dressed and he can wait until she is. Bobby bellows that he has seen plenty of naked women in the “field.” Even Malia says nice try and asks him to wait but Bobby (being the douche that he is) gets angry and blames Hannah and her territorial marking of him as the reason for not allowing him to treat a naked female crew member who is essentially suffering from a bad paper cut.

It’s time for The Tribe to leave and Captain Sandy counts the tip and invites the crew out to dinner as part of her tradition. She also asks to meet with Hannah privately and a grumbly Hannah heads upstairs, sure that she will be micromanaged some more. Instead, Captain Sandy is full of praise for how professional, elegant, and competent Hannah is at her job. Maybe now Hannah can roll her eyes a few less times?

The crew heads out to dinner in Croatia, while Wiz Wesley Walton stays behind to manage the boat (and his FOMO). At dinner, Bobby tries his best to start flirting with Malia while simultaneously ignoring Lauren and any attempt on her part to be friendly. Captain Sandy graciously takes leave back to the boat so Wiz can come and enjoy the fun. Now that the Captain is gone, they head to a club to take shots, have too many drinks and grind on each other. Hannah and Malia are on the dance floor, getting too close for Bobby’s comfort and he waits to the side, like the true creep he is, never letting Malia out of his sight. Hasn’t he ever heard of playing it cool? Damn, man, take a cold shower already.

Below Deck Mediterranean Recap

As the night winds down, everyone heads back to the boat and both Adam and Bobby literally take turns grabbing Malia from each other’s arms. Did these guys take dating tips from a caveman!? Why don’t they just drag her back to the boat by her hair?

Hannah and Malia continue bonding and Bobby is growing more and more worried about how that will affect his chances with Malia. The second Hannah is out of his sight, he demands to know what she was talking to Malia about. When Malia playfully say she knows all his secrets, Bobby blows up and storms off to find Hannah. He finds her, in the bathroom, and barges in anyway! Damn, is no place sacred!? She kicks him out and when she is done, goes to find him and see what the problem is. He freaks on her, saying she is always c*ck blocking him and accuses her of being an alcoholic. When Malia tells Bobby they really weren’t talking about him, he starts yelling at Hannah again.

Looks like if Bobby was so worried about his chances with Malia, he should have been less concerned with what Hannah had to say and more concerned with his own actions. Hannah didn’t have to give Malia the run down, she saw it with her own eyes and what she saw was definitely not a good look, bro.
