‘Survivor: Game Changers’ Exclusive Interviews with the TWO contestants voted out of Episode 1 – Spoilers!

Survivor Game Changers

Survivor Game Changers

Survivor‘s 34th season kicked off with an action-packed double-episode on Wednesday, as the first episode of “Survivor: Game Changers” premiered. It was also the 500th episode of the show overall since the series premiere back in the Summer of 2000. A double-ep meant that we witnessed twice the excitement, twice the back-stabbing and twice the torch-snuffing, as not one but two contestants were sent home.

Caution, as spoilers from this week’s episode are to follow! Turn back now! And if you want to get caught up, be sure to check out the full Premiere Episode Recap here.

The Stakes Have Been Raised

Yes, two recent major All-Stars of the game were sent home during the first episode of Game Changers, showing that nobody is safe this season. First out, it was Ciera Eastin, who had been playing for her third time in the past four years. Ciera became “Survivor-famous” as the feisty, strategic daughter of former player Laura Morett, competing with her mom on Season 27, Blood vs Water. When most “couples” that season were looking out for one another, Ciera was in it to win it, and she permanently etched her name in the history books when she actually voted out her own mother at a Tribal Council. That season, Ciera also famously forced the second rock-drawing tie-breaker in Survivor history.  She ended up finishing fifth overall, but was selected by fans to have a shot at redeeming herself on Season 31, Second Chances. That didn’t work out so well either, when Ciera ended up being sent packing midway through the game.

The Stakes Have Been Raised

This season, Ciera just didn’t seem to get any footing out of the gates. Her reputation was a bit too much for her to overcome, as some of the others were aware that if she was capable of voting out her own mother, what’s to stop her from doing pretty much anything? It was just too big a risk to keep her around, and she was too big a threat. She didn’t help herself any by throwing out a few names, which didn’t go over to well with the others that she perceived were on her side. Ciera‘s appearance this season was definitely a disappointing one, and she was unanimously voted out by her tribe, becoming the very first game changer to be sent home, long before having any real chance to save the game.

The Stakes Have Been Raised

Tony Vlachos, too, was fighting against a strong reputation. He previously won Survivor: Cagayan, playing a super-aggressive game that included lying, backstabbing and a Spy Shack that he built to gain intel on his opponents. Knowing that he would be a huge threat this time – and being only one of three previous winners to be competing in Game Changers – Tony came out “balls to the wall” once again this season, and within minutes of hitting the beach told his tribe that he was going off to look for a hidden Idol. Even still, he managed to survive the first Tribal Council, but another challenge loss saw him returning there sooner than he had planned. Tony had tried pulling together an alliance of big threats, thinking that if he surrounded himself with other big targets, that maybe he would be able to stick around for a bit. But his paranoia got the best of him, and when he lost faith in Sandra as an ally, his game was all but over…he never even got to finish his Spy Bunker. After trying to gain favor with the guys on his tribe and with Michaela, Tony ended up biting off more than he could chew going up against Queen Sandra, and was sent packing in a 7-2 vote.

The Stakes Have Been Raised

I had the chance to talk with both Ciera and Tony today, the day after their last episode aired. You can listen to the full audio of the interview and podcast here, but here were some of the highlights from each interview:

CIERA INTERVIEW HIGHLIGHTS:

About having played Survivor now three times in the past four years:

Ciera Eastin: I feel like I had a feeling before I went out to film this season that I sort of needed a break. But you don’t really know when the opportunity will come around again. So I didn’t really want to pass it up, but I was like, man, I need a break. My body hadn’t fully gotten back to what it normally feels like, my sleeping habits weren’t all the way back yet, let alone the time lost with my family, that definitely all played a role.

On pre-game scheming or forming alliances prior to a returning player season:

Not for me, I try to stay out of all the pre-season alliance crap. Because it never honestly works. Going into the season I talked with Brad Culpepper, and I’ve played with Jeff (Varner) before, and I’ve met Sierra and Andrea so I had built relationships with some of these people, but nothing like, hey, you and me are going all the way to the end. I’m sure it was going on with other people but honestly it never works.

On overcoming her reputation of having voted out her mom and forcing a rock draw:

I’m pretty good at building relationships and getting people to forget that stuff, I just didn’t get the opportunity to. So I think that stuff will always stick with me, but I don’t think it will hinder me in the game like it would a Tony or a Russell.

On the response from fans after being the first person voted out and how she’s handling it:

Really mixed responses. For the most part it’s been really kind and supportive, but there’s always those people that are just mean.  For me personally, my ego can handle being voted out first.  My parents and mom raised me to be a gracious loser, like, you lose in life and it is what it is, and I can handle that. But what really hurts is feeling like I let people down. I know that I have so many fans, and my family, and even Jeff Probst who had predicted me as the winner. I feel like I let people down. So trying to put in to words what I’m feeling, that’s what’s bothering me. Losing doesn’t bother me, I get over that pretty quickly. It’s the letting people down that sucks.

On how she feels this tarnishes her legacy in the game:

I hope it doesn’t. I guess I could understand why it would, but I really hope it does not. My head really wasn’t where it should have been. I feel like everybody messes up and I made a mistake, and I can own that as being is what it is. I hope I can come back one day after really taking a break and show people what I’m really made of.

TONY INTERVIEW HIGHLIGHTS:

When asked about the slow pace of the game, compared to Tony’s normal style:

Tony Vlachos: It was brutal man. Everyone acted like they had won a field trip…like Jeff would say, everybody felt like the shark was lurking in the water and nobody wanted to step out of line, nobody wanted to jump off the boat because they knew the shark was in the water. I just can’t. I just can’t sit there, I don’t want to talk about who’s favorite food is what, I want to play, you know what I mean?

About his reputation coming into the game and if he thought he could overcome it:

You know what, before starting the game, I really thought that. I thought these players would not want to work with me and they’d want to vote me right out. But after a few days on the beach, I was like, all right, I’m feeling it. These people are opening up to me, they know they can use me as a shield, or as a bartering chip later on in the game. And it was working, I mean I had Caleb, I had Malcolm, I had Sandra. It was happening until that turn of events with Troyzan and Sandra, where I heard my name, and that was the big turn of events for me.

On the Tribal Council that sent him home, and the exchange he had with Sandra as he left the game:

I knew 99% I was going home…at that point I was like Sandra has everybody wrapped and I’m done. I knew it was going to be me heading into Tribal. I mean with Sandra, I know she all upset, I guess she took it personal that I was going after her. But I don’t take nothing personal in that game, it’s a high-stakes game so when you burn people, it hurts.

On any regrets he may or may not have this season:

I just wish I didn’t hear Sandra and Troyzan talking about me. Everything else I did was fine, they just thought I was being a jokester or being a clown and just goofing off, which was exactly what I wanted. I didn’t want to go in and have everybody thinking I was scheming and plotting. I wanted them to think I was a happy-go-lucky dude just running around the jungle acting like a maniac.

On if he feels this performance tarnishes his Survivor legacy in the game:

I do, but most of my fans they’re saying that it doesn’t matter, that I was a huge target even before I got into the game. But at the same time, anybody can win the game, the stars can align, the luck can be on your side, which it was for me on Survivor: Cagayan. But if I’m a good player, I should have been able to avoid being voted out. Like Sandra, she got the best of me, because if I was better than her, I would have been able to get her out. But she got me out, that makes her better than me, as far as I’m concerned. That’s how I see it. She was able to get her troops together, I wasn’t able to get my troops together, therefore she’s a better player than I am.

Eden Sassoon Thinks Dorit Kemsley’s Shady Comments To Erika Girardi Were Unnecessary And Uncomfortable

Eden Sassoon Thinks Dorit Kemsley's Shady Comments To Erika Girardi Were Unnecessary And Uncomfortable

LOS ANGELES, CA - FEBRUARY 22: Eden Sassoon attends the OK! Magazine's Annual Pre-Oscar Event on February 22, 2017 in Los Angeles, California. (Photo by JB Lacroix/Getty Images)

Well, this is rich coming from the woman who’s consistently made nearly every cast mate (and viewer) of The Real Housewives Of Beverly Hills feel itchy and squirmy with her creepy, intrusive behavior for the past two months! Yes, our very own Kim Richards  interventionist herself, Eden Sassoon, is now calling out Dorit Kemsley’s  comments to Erika Girardi as inappropriate and “uncomfortable” to watch. Looks like battle lines are being drawn for the forthcoming Dorit verus Erika face off in Hong Kong!

Before she dissects that showdown, Eden comments on Kyle Richards’ party the best way she knows how: WITH A MILLION HASHTAGS. Sigh. “As you guys know by now, I love social media #LOL. I’m on it all the time. So I knew the Fat Jewish before going to the party at Kyle’s store. Her store is beautiful! I loved getting to shop while I was hanging out! But, even more than that, I loved watching Kyle get a lap dance from the Fat Jewish #Dying. I don’t think many could hear me in the background, but if you listen close, I was telling her to spank him. #EdenStyle ”

CLICK CONTINUE READING FOR MORE!

As for awkward moments at the party, Eden places Dorit’s treatment of Erika at the top of her list. She asks, “why does Dorit always have to make it uncomfortable between her and Erika? I was confused watching that. Erika so clearly gave Dorit a genuine compliment, and Dorit had to make it a big deal and try to make Erika feel bad. That wasn’t necessary.”

And although Eileen Davidson was “accidentally” invited along to Lisa Vanderpump’s Hong Kong trip, Eden claims that she received no such shady treatment! Her invitation was extended fair and square…as she sees it.

Eden explains in her blog, “How about Erika inviting Eileen on the Hong Kong trip? #Priceless. And I would just like to make it clear that when I walked over, I asked what they were talking about, and they all started joking about throwing all of the invitations out, because clearly the entire group was going to Hong Kong… Then when Lisa Vanderpump ASKED me if I wanted to go to Hong Kong, of course I said yes! Who would ever say no? That would be nuts! Hong Kong is amazing, just breathtaking. Like I said, I’ll buy my own flight, but let’s go! #Adventure”

RELATED: Lisa Vanderpump Appointed Editor In Chief Of ‘Beverly Hills Lifestyle’ Magazine

Next, Eden reflects on Erika’s trip home to Georgia, and says it gave her some new insights into her cast mate. “I enjoyed getting to see a different side of Erika in this episode. I always see this beautiful, confident girl at the events we go to, but it was really nice to see her being so vulnerable. The trip was emotional but very empowering for women!”

“Having to reflect on the past (her grandmother, how she was raised) and realize that’s why you were molded into the person you are today is very important,” continues Eden. “That type of reflection helps you understand yourself. She is searching, as are we… especially me! God, I’m always searching for something #TypicalEden. I just appreciated her honest conversations with her mother, because I can relate.”

Eden closes by informing viewers that there will be “Plenty of drama and adventure!” in Hong Kong, including Eden meeting up with some rando she found online. She teases that she doesn’t “want to give anything away, but guys this is my #LoveStory. I can’t be #Tamed. I just want to be free and open to anything when it comes to love.”

In a final touch of irony, Eden leaves us to ponder this mantra: “Note To Self: You never know someone’s past, so don’t judge their present!” Ermmm…perhaps that advice would have come in handy before rabidly trying to “save” the Richards sisters from themselves? Then again, maybe not. HASHTAG MISSION IMPOSSIBLE.

TELL US: DO YOU AGREE WITH EDEN’S ASSESSMENT OF DORIT’S BEHAVIOR TOWARD ERIKA? IS EDEN ALIGNING HERSELF WITH ERIKA AGAINST DORIT?

Sheree Whitfield Gives Her Take On The Drama Between Kandi Burruss & Porsha Williams

Sheree Whitfield

Sheree Whitfield

Thanks to Sheree Whitfield, all of the gossip Porsha Williams has spread about Kandi Burruss has come to her attention and now Kandi and Porsha are both out for blood. Phaedra Parks is actually the one who first accused Kandi of having a sexual relationship with Shamea Morton, but so far she has been sitting quietly while her best friend Porsha takes the blame. Kandi came at Porsha in full force during the last episode.

Obviously, Porsha and Phaedra were the ones who were dragging Kandi behind her back (and eventually to her face), but Kandi only found out about it thanks to Sheree, so I wonder how Sheree feels about all of this. Is she happy that her messiness resulted in an extremely dramatic story line for the show? Or does she actually feel bad about the accusations snowballing into Porsha accusing Kandi and Todd Tucker of attempting to drug her?

CLICK “CONTINUE READING” FOR MORE!

As a part of her latest Bravo blog, Sheree was asked if she was surprised after Kandi gathered the group to talk about her heated lunch with Porsha. “I think my reaction said it all! I can’t believe all of the tea that these girls are spilling about each other. Apparently, I’m not the only one carrying bones in this group! LOL!”

Really, Sheree? You can’t believe that these girls are coming at each other with accusations when they are already at odds on a reality TV show? That was exactly what we expected to happen, obviously not the specifics of attempted rape and drugging, but you can’t actually be surprised by how nasty things got between Porsha and Kandi.

Sheree was also asked about the messy dinner that went down during the first night of the group’s Hawaii trip. Instead of providing any real insight, Sheree stated the obvious: “There was just so much tension at the table. Kandi was still visibly very upset about the unsubstantiated accusations Porsha made.”

RELATED: Sheree Whitfield Embraces Her Role As The “Bone Collector”

Nevertheless, Sheree stuck to her story about how she feels like her messiness is good for the group since she also added, “I felt in order for us to have a good trip we should all just clear the air.” Yeah, I don’t think it’s actually possible for this group to ever have a “good trip.”

Aside from her typical meddling, Sheree and her ex husband Bob Whitfield have continued testing the waters to see if they can get their relationship back on track. Although next week looks like a terrible episode for Sheree since the preview shows Bob talking to Sheree about choking her in the past, it was all good between them this week (minus the buckets of sweat Bob was dripping as per usual).

When asked about how she felt about Bob coming on the group trip, Sheree admitted, “I felt optimistic about Bob coming to Maui. I looked at it as a natural progression in our efforts to rebuild our friendship.” It will be interesting to see what she says after the next episode. It looks like a rough one for her.

TELL US – DO YOU THINK SHEREE IS SO MESSY IN A GENUINE EFFORT TO HELP THE GROUP OR IS SHE STIRRING THE POT FOR THE SHOW? DO YOU WANT SHEREE & BOB TO GET BACK TOGETHER?

Lisa Vanderpump Appointed Editor In Chief Of 'Beverly Hills Lifestyle' Magazine

Lisa Vanderpump blog

Just in case her lifestyle wasn’t fabulous enough, Lisa Vanderpump is adding a little more glitz and glam to her repertoire! The restaurant owner, philanthropist, and star of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills has been named Editor In Chief of the luxury magazine, Beverly Hills Lifestyle.

Lisa, who’s been involved with the magazine for seven years, says she loves writing, “as my fans know from my blogs,” and that her tenure as Editor In Chief is “going to be a passion project for me.” Beverly Hills Lifestyle caters to a readership who are interested in the finer points of travel, food, fashion, and “luxury lifestyle” (hey, Kyle Richards – they stole your mojo!).

Lisa, who Beverly Hills Lifestyle thinks is a natural fit for the job, plans to bring s little Vanderpump swag to the already established magazine. Page Six reports Lisa saying she plans to cover “everything that is fabulous in traditional Vanderpump style!”

Magazine co-founder and president Mark Curian said in a press release that Lisa “embodies everything” his magazine is all about. “She is class, grace, and luxury personified and her personal touch will take Beverly Hills Lifestyle in an exciting direction,” he added.

Lisa, who opened Vanderpump Dogs Rescue Center just last week with husband Ken Todd, is also currently fighting to end the Yulin Dog Meat Festival in China. A long time animal and LGBT rights advocate, Lisa plans to highlight some of her charitable endeavors in the magazine as well.

“Each month we will highlight a different charity, as well as try and tie in a philanthropic aspect to all of our plans and events,” Lisa wrote in her first letter from the editor, adding that she hopes the opportunity to spread the word through Beverly Hills Lifestyle will “draw attention to some wonderful causes.”

If you’re wondering just how Lisa fell into this editorial position seemingly out of the blue, here’s a clue: Her daughter, Pandora Vanderpump Sabo, is the magazine’s Executive Editor. So, is this just another step in a master plan for the Vanderpumps to take over the world of all things fabulous in Beverly Hills? Or maybe just another reason for Lisa’s cast mates to be insanely jealous of her? Time will tell – but, no matter what, I’m here for all of it!

Jaclyn Shuman Explains The Story Behind Her Flirtation With Carl Radke & If There’s Anything Happening With Kyle Cooke

SUMMER HOUSE -- Season:1 -- Pictured: Jaclyn Shuman -- (Photo by: Virginia Sherwood/Bravo)

SUMMER HOUSE -- Season:1 -- Pictured: Jaclyn Shuman -- (Photo by: Virginia Sherwood/Bravo)

When I watched the episode of Summer House with Lauren Wirkus laying into Cristina Gibson for “accusing” Jaclyn Shuman of flirting with Carl Radke, I was wondering what Lauren would think watching the previous episodes because it did come across like Jaclyn was flirting with Carl. She kept talking about sleeping in the same bed with him, so I thought that was pretty “flirtatious,” but Jaclyn provided some back story to explain that conversation. Will it make the viewers look at their interaction with a different perspective?

Believe it or not, but her explanation does make sense. Do I still think she was flirting with Carl? Yeah, I do. It seems like Jaclyn flirts with everyone and the whole cast (except for Cristina) is okay with it. Still, I have to say that I was surprised when she shared some additional information about her conversation with Carl.

CLICK “CONTINUE READING” FOR MORE!

I’m not a fan of Cristina’s meddling, but without her pretty much nothing would happen in this show, so she is at least keeping things interesting. Nevertheless, I did agree with her when it came to her take on the Jaclyn and Carl interaction (based on what made the show). I would think the same thing if I saw two people talking about sleeping in the same bed for hours, but there was apparently more to the story.

Jaclyn did an interview on the Buttered Pop podcast and clarified the room situation in the house: “The executive suite was actually where Cristina, Carl, and myself were supposed to sleep because we’re guests.” This is in comparison to the other cast members who are renters.

Apparently the conversation we saw with Jaclyn and Carl talking about sharing a bed wasn’t the very forward flirt fest that came across on the episode. Jaclyn insists there was more said before that exchange. She says she told Carl, “I don’t feel comfortable sharing a bed with you, even if it’s platonic because I don’t know you that well. I know it’s childish, but I just don’t know you that well.”

Jaclyn continued, “Whenever I came back from Greece, one of my good girlfriends who has done a shore house with Carl goes, ‘Honestly he’s a good guy. He’s a lot of fun. He’s very respectful. I’ll let him know how you feel about the situation.'”

She explained that what we saw – them chatting about sleeping in the same bed – wasn’t a hookup initiation. Supposedly it was more of an apology fest for what Jaclyn said to her friend in Greece. “I pulled him aside and said ‘I wanted to apologize for saying, I wouldn’t share a bed with you. I just didn’t know you. I didn’t know if you were drunk something would happen or you would try something”

Jaclyn explained how she feels Cristina skewed the situation. “Cristina is listening to all this and the next morning I was like ‘Oh you didn’t get in the bed.’ He said, ‘I felt bad waking you. You looked so peaceful and I know you had a really hard week with work.'”

And then she talked about what we all ended up seeing on Summer House. Jaclyn said, “I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that conversation and the way it got back to Lauren was ‘Jaclyn told Carl that she wanted to sleep with him. And Carl said she’s so pretty when she sleeps.’ That’s not what happened at all and I think that’s why you saw me tell Cristina to shut the f–k up.”

Based on what was shown, Jaclyn’s “shut the f–k up” seemed to be overkill, but if this is all true, I can see why Jaclyn might be annoyed. It’s definitely a different account of events than the viewers got to see.

RELATED: Cristina Doesn’t Want To Speak To Lindsay Ever Again

Just like the rest of the cast, Jaclyn is pretty much done with Cristina, even though she kept trying to give her a chance. She recalled, “Being in the house at the beginning, I would see everyone getting annoyed or frustrated with Cristina or saying little comments about how she was meddling. At first I was like I feel bad that everyone’s getting upset with her. I don’t feel like she’s trying to do this on purpose.”

And now she feels a totally different way since she stated, “I think she’s just a shit stirrer.”  She later said, “I don’t see you as the victim anymore. You’re doing it to yourself and committing social suicide.” Damn. Apparently that is the case – at least in this clique.

Jaclyn added, “I don’t know that I feel a need to continue a relationship with someone who doesn’t understand that certain things that went on this summer were so lighthearted and nothing to make a fuss out of. She sees it her way and I see it my way.” Well, if there’s a Season 2, I’m sure Cristina will be on it since she is the one person who has drama with everyone in the cast, so Jaclyn might have to hang with her again.

Jaclyn made another interesting comment: “I don’t think that there’s true bad intentions, but I do think that there’s a screw loose. She’s stuck in her own world.”

Aside from referring to Cristina as a “shit stirrer,” using those exact words, and other phrases to convey that same thought, Jaclyn owned up to her flirtatious nature by saying, “I flirt with anyone. I practically would flirt with the door if I think the door is really beautiful.” She even admitted, “After watching the show, there are things that I can see how they can be taken. I’m going to take a little step back and be a little more aware.”

Jaclyn was also asked if she and Kyle Cooke have hooked up since making out on the party bus and she teased, “You’ll just have to tune in,” which makes me think that they have, or she’s just really getting good at hyping up a reality TV show. She was also asked if she was interested in pursuing a relationship with him. She giggled and said, “No comment,” which doesn’t seem like a lot in isolation, but this was after her adamantly declaring that she had “no interest” in Carl. So maybe there is more to her flirtation with Kyle?

Battle of two winners makes for an explosive Survivor Game Changers start

What the first seven minutes of Survivor Game Changers lacked in drama, the next 113 made up for over and over again. The show exploded out of the gate—starting immediately after that preview cut off, when the tribes started gathering supplies, and Ozzy flew off the boat to go for a floating toolkit and Tai fell overboard with a huge chicken crate coming crashing down on top of him as he hit the water. And that was before the real game play began. Read this story »

‘Survivor: Game Changers’ Premiere Episode Recap: There Will Be Blood

The Stakes Have Been Raised

The Stakes Have Been Raised

Not everybody is a fan of returning player seasons, and I get the reasoning. There are so many people out there just clamoring for an opportunity to play Survivor, why not give new faces a chance? And while that’s a fair argument, there’s a special joy in getting to watch your favorite players play the game again, or to watch legends go head-to-head. These sort of showdowns have produced some of the absolute best moments in the game’s history, and unarguably some of the very best seasons (Fans vs. Favorites and Heroes vs. Villains come to mind). As Survivor kicked off its 34th Season Wednesday night – “Survivor: Game Changers,” featuring 20 returning contestants – we were given another such epic showdown, between the self-proclaimed King and Queen of Survivor, which resulted in a somewhat shocking and satisfying start to what looks to be a promising season.

There’s a lot to get to, so get caught up first by reading my previous article, “Survivor: Game Changers – Everything You Need to Know” and then be warned that if you read any further than this very paragraph, that the events of the Premiere Episode will get spoiled for you. You’ve been warned! Now like a bug caught in Sandra’s hair, let’s let loose this Recap!

CLICK THE CONTINUE READING BUTTON FOR MORE, AND THIS IS YOUR LAST *SPOILER* WARNING!

The Stakes Have Been Raised

Jeff Probst had publicly stated that in his opinion, Game Changers got off to an odd start. Not necessarily a slow start, although that’s up for debate, but instead he described a very cautious “mood” that the game would start off in. 20 returning “game changers” were returning to compete, some of whom have won the game at least once (Tony, JT, Sandra), but strangely enough it seemed as if most of this group was a little bit nervous and hesitant to make a big move right out of the gate. This of course, does not include Tony Vlachos, winner of Survivor: Cagayan and recent inductee to the Survivor Hall of Fame, who within minutes of arriving at his tribe’s beach this episode, told his tribe-mates, “You guys play nice-nice, I’m going to look for an Idol.” You gotta love Tony, the walking-talking epitome of the moniker “go big or go home.”

But the “tentativeness” started even before the players hit the beach, when Probst kicked off this season the same way that he did the very first season of Survivor: By having the players scramble for supplies on a ship, before jumping on their tribe raft and rowing themselves into shore. There was one twist that wasn’t there in Borneo however, and that was that there was a buoy located a good ways away from the boat, and whoever could swim out to it first, would win a treasure trove of helpful tools. Only Ozzy even bothered taking the challenge, which was a bit surprising. Sierra uncovered an envelope containing the “Legacy Advantage,” which you may remember from last season gives the person Immunity when there is 13 or 6 players left in the game, and it must be willed on if the person holding it were to get voted-out prior to these intervals in the game. Sierra did gain the Legacy Advantage, but only after over-looking the envelope and trampling on it a few times first. Nobody else noticed it there either. To me, all of this boat action just showed me that this group was a bit nervous and maybe not as aggressive or attentive as we may have expected them to be. Come on you so-called game changers!  Get your **** together!

Tonight’s 120-minute Premiere Episode was less an over-stuffed premiere and more of a “back-to-back” regular episode. With returning players, they can jettison the usual introductions and the whole “get to know the tribe” segments. Instead, a lot of the first hour was spent sort of checking in with all of these players to see if and how they might have changed. Michaela for example, was looking to turn over a new, more relaxed leaf (it didn’t last too long, but as she said tonight, “Oh well, you can’t contain greatness.”). Zeke had to pinch himself knowing that he was playing next to many of his favorites, but kept reminding himself (and us) that he belongs there too. Sarah called herself the “silent assassin” and she may have been right, because we never heard from her again the rest of the night. Brad Culpepper adopted the motto “WWMD,” or “What Would Monica Do?” referring to his wife, the lovely Monica Culpepper. Caleb didn’t give us much confidence that he wasn’t going to be medically evacuated again, taking a nasty spill on some wet rocks and also getting his arm caught up during a challenge…Beast-Mode better take it easy, bro. Tai is still more concerned about chickens, and unable to tell a lie, as displayed when he was caught in Cirie‘s headlights. And speaking of Cirie, it appears that there is still some baggage remaining from when she played a hand in voting out Ozzy over eight years ago, as both of them seemed uneasy with the other. Yes, another key element to these returning player seasons is that you must always factor in the players’ previous seasons and relationships, and even though several other players this season have crossed paths before, I find it interesting that they chose to highlight the Ozzy/Cirie relationship. Could that be a seed of foreshadow for what’s to come this season?

SURVIVOR

The tribes, for the record, were as follows: Over at the “Mana” Tribe, you have Michaela, Aubry, Sandra, Ciera, Malcolm, Hali, Caleb, Troyzan, Jeff and Tony. The “Nuku” Tribe consisted of Andrea, Brad Culpepper, Sierra, Cirie, Sarah, Ozzy, Zeke, JT, Tai and Debbie. So that’s out of the way.

Of all of the players this time around, it seemed like Ciera was maybe the least aware of her own reputation. She was instantly targeted as a huge threat, and as Varner pointed out, she voted out her own mother and forced a rock draw…is there anything that this girl won’t do? Nobody seemed to want to give Ciera a chance, but she also didn’t help herself by being the first person on her tribe to blurt out the names of others. She perhaps felt a little too comfortable a little too early, having been able to “blend in” in the past. But not this time around.

The Stakes Have Been Raised

And then there is poor Tony, instantly up to his old tricks. You loved his Spy Shack in Cagayan? How about a #SpyBunker? You have to give him credit, because of this batch of 20, only Tony seemed to come in guns a’blazin.’ It proved to be a losing strategy, but Tony’s reputation preceded him. To his credit, once he settled down and began to play the game, he did have what seemed like a solid strategy. Knowing he is a major threat, his idea was to align himself with the other “biggest threats” on his tribe. He pulled in Aubry, Malcolm, Caleb and Sandra. It appeared to be a great move, but his own paranoia did him in this time. When Troyzan pulled Sandra aside to – yes – talk about voting out Tony, Tony perceived this to be Sandra plotting behind his back. In actuality, I feel like Sandra was actually on board with working with Tony, but what was she to do when Troyzan pulls her aside and asks for her ear? By this conversation, Tony was convinced that Sandra was against him, and the rest is history. Don’t you even begin to rile the Queen.

I’ve gone on record several times in saying that Sandra is the hands-down best Survivor player of all-time, by the mere fact that she is the only person to have won the game twice. You can bring every other argument in the world, and I’ll say yeah, but have they won the game two out of two times? Sandra deserves to call herself the Queen, and her “anybody but me” strategy has worked beautifully twice. This being said, there is a HUGE faction of Survivor fans that don’t agree with this, and think that somehow Sandra “got lucky” or is otherwise a sham. Dude, she won twice…that’s something Boston Rob, Richard Hatch, Kim Spradlin, Tyson Apostol, or any of the 498 people who have ever played Survivor can’t say. As lovable and as good as Tony may be, he aimed his “heat-seeking missile” at the Queen and he done got blowed-up.  Just add this to her list of achievements that no other Survivor can match: She took down Tony Vlachos.

The Stakes Have Been Raised

Sandra’s problem this season though may have been revealed by Tony. She is used to blending in and letting others pick themselves off, but she has rarely been the target and put out front this early in a season. But as sad as I was to see Tony (and Ciera) go home after just one episode, I was so happy to know that Sandra will be around at least for one more week. That exchange at the end too…my, my. Tony may have been right when he said, “sheep being led to the slaughter,” after being voted out, but Sandra summed it up nicely when she fired back, “That’s what you get for plotting against me.” She probably didn’t need to add in the “say hi to Ciera” but she did, in true Sandra fashion.

Of course in addition to the big showdown in the second-hour, and all of the check-ins with the contestants, there were also two epic challenges. It looks like there was beautiful weather this season in Fiji where the show taped last Summer, and the first two challenges involved land and ocean, and a 600-lb snake. Of course the “Nuku” tribe won the Immunity Idol both times, and kudos to the prop department in crafting the most unique-looking Idol I think the show’s ever seen (it’s basically a miniature scuba helmet, instead of some exotic doll as is custom). The 2nd challenge I might add, was pretty epic, as the Mana Tribe overcame a huge deficit to make it a nail-biter, only to lose by a thread when JT hit the winning ring toss. Malcolm had been the one to narrow the gap, much to the chagrin of Michaela, who was chomping at the bit for a chance to get in the challenge, but was denied. It seems Michaela is growing increasingly frustrated, mainly because she has not been getting much respect thus far…maybe because of her age, but probably mostly because of the fact that nobody knows who she is or what she’s all about (hers and Zeke‘s season had not yet aired when this season filmed).

There was also a great scene this episode between Deb and Cirie, and it reminded me yet again as to why I love returning player seasons. Deb and Cirie come from different seasons, but it feels like they come from two different worlds, and I loved how Deb handled herself after Cirie tried to offer up some friendly “advice,” which in actuality was just a comment dripping with condescension. Deb dropped a few more occupations on us that we didn’t know she had, and also let us know that her “BS” Detector is working beautifully.

The Stakes Have Been Raised

Episode Take-Away: So who seemed to get through the first two hours unscathed? Well we didn’t hear much from Andrea, or Nuku in general, simply because they’ve yet to go to Tribal Council. Varner – for being such a larger-than-life personality – also seemed to be blending in nicely through two Tribals. But honestly, as we saw tonight, nobody is going to be able to hide in a season with this caliber of players…just ask Ciera. But let’s just hope they all play as hard as Tony. Smarter than Tony yes, but just as hard. As for the season itself, I think we’re in store for a good one, but man will Tony’s energy and drama be sorely missed.

Strategic Move of the Week: I’ll have to wait until my exit interview with Tony to figure out just why all of the votes went his way, and why he ultimately cast his vote for Aubry. But I think the best move of the night didn’t happen at the Mana tribe at all, but over at Nuku. Those that know the magical powers of Cirie in this game, know that it wasn’t a coincidence that they had a segment tonight showing her approaching nearly everyone at her tribe. She made nice with Sarah and also Zeke, two of the more “low-key” players on the tribe. And even though she still may have an existing beef with Ozzy, and that she may have rubbed Deb the wrong way, I still think that Cirie made a subtle, but powerful play during tonight’s episode.

Voted out this week: Ciera and Tony

Won Immunity: The Nuku Tribe (twice)

Vote #1: No Idol played. 9 – Ciera (Sandra, Tony, Troyzan, Michaela, Varner, Aubry, Caleb, Malcolm, Hali). 1 – Michaela (Ciera).

Vote #2: No Idol played. 7 – Tony (Troyzan, Michaela, Varner, Aubry, Caleb, Malcolm, Hali). 2 – Aubry (Sandra, Tony).

Next Week’s Episode: It’s only been six days in the game so far, but Probst tells the tribes to drop their buffs! Game Changers is changing up the game already! We also see a few contestants chasing some goats, and it looks like the former “Hero” JT is up to some mischief, when he strands a few of his tribe-mates out on a raft so he can look for an Idol on the shore in peace.

Important Note! Remember that Thursday afternoon I will be bringing you my exclusive interviews with BOTH Ciera and Tony right here at Reality Tea. It will probably post sometime in the evening (EST). Then be sure to check back next week for my episode preview, recap on Wednesday night and new exit interview next Thursday. Also next week, I’ll have a special edition of the “FilmSurvivor Podcast” when I’m joined by Survivor guru Gordon Holmes of XfinityTV.com, who was actually out on the island during the filming of the first few days of this season. You won’t want to miss it!

I’m also the National Film Critic for AXS.com, and I encourage you to check out my movie reviews! As always, the easiest way to get all of my Survivor coverage and movie reviews is to follow me on Twitter – @tomsantilli – or on Facebook.
