Exclusive Interview: Survivor: David vs. Goliath’s Pat Cusack: “I Was Definitely In A Dark Place”
When it rains, it pours…literally, when speaking of the Premiere Episode of Survivor: David vs. Goliath. While going through casting, auditioning and all of the logistical considerations that one must go through in order to finally arrive on the show, it is often a dream come true for many, to FINALLY make it on Survivor. But too often, the show reminds players and viewers that while this is all for entertainment, it is definitely real. One contestant found this out the hard way in one of the most shocking exits the game has ever witnessed.

Yes, it didn’t end well for Pat Cusack, even though he was just getting started. Just based on appearances alone, Pat looked to be one of the stand-out characters on his David Tribe…he was larger, meaner-looking and more physically-threatening than any of the other nine “nerds” on his team. This 40-year-old maintenance manager from Watervilet, New York was used for contrast by Jeff Probst, when in the first minutes of the game, Jeff compared Pat’s story and upbringing with that of Alison‘s, on the Goliath Tribe. We quickly understood why Pat was labeled a David, as this man was no stranger to adversity.
And boy, adversity would come to Pat quickly. Even though he was instrumental in building his camp’s shelter, his loud demeanor rubbed a lot of people the wrong way. But when the torrential downpours began, man was his tribe grateful that they had Pat. His brute strength wasn’t enough to get them their first Immunity Challenge win, but leaving the challenge, Pat was seemingly one of two options for the first boot, the other being the crafty lawyer, Nick.
But Pat would never make it back to camp. The terrible weather brought with it rough waters, and Pat suffered a horrific accident while being transported back to the island where the David Tribe had set up their shelter. A large “crack” was heard when the boat slammed against an unusually large wave, and Pat was instantly in tremendous pain, so much so that the boat turned around and headed back to the challenge area. This was so unprecedented an incident, that there were not even cameras present during this normal travel period, where the contestants are on a total “lock-down,” unable to talk or communicate with one another.
The sight of Pat being carried onto shore on a gurney, surrounded by Doctor Joe and the Survivor medical staff, was also jarring to the audience, who was expecting to see the season’s very first Tribal Council after a fairly normal commercial break. I for one had to rewind my DVD thinking I had missed something or had accidentally skipped ahead. To everyone’s horror, especially his fellow cast mates who were waiting nearby, watching, Pat was in a real emergency situation. It wasn’t soon after that Jeff Probst showed up (never a good sign for one’s game) and after chatting with the doctors, announced that Pat had no choice: His back injury sustained on the boat was serious enough that he needed to be pulled from the game.
Pat‘s exit from the game was the quickest every by medical evacuation (tied with Kourtney Moon, who also exited on Day 3), and it was the first time an injury of this nature occurred. The final graphic on the episode told us that Pat was able to make a full recovery, but you can be sure that he has much more to say on the subject.
I had the chance to speak to Pat today on the FilmSurvivor Podcast (the full audio of which you can find and download at the bottom of this article). But here are some highlights from the interview:
PAT CUSACK INTERVIEW
On how he remembers the incident:
Pat Cusack: We were in the middle of cyclones and the seas were just rearing their ugly head, we were in 15-20-foot waves in a 20-foot boat, with 13 people on it…they’re light boats and we went air-born, and that’s pretty much all that I remembered until I woke up on a helicopter…I had a spinal compression…it ruptured the bursa sack between my second and third vertebrae.
On whether or not the producers and doctors made the right call by removing him from the game:
Pat: I believe they did, as much as it hurts to say that. But at that time, my long-term health and well-being is more important than the game…if I was able to convey what I was feeling, then it probably would have been different, but they have nothing but the highest of medical professionals there, they know what they’re doing, and being that I couldn’t express what I was feeling, they had to assume the worst. I’m grateful that they took the time and the care to assess the situation, but yeah I probably would have wanted it to be a different outcome.
On the toll that the evacuation had on him mentally once out of the game:
Pat: Initially when I was first brought in off the helicopter and into the hospital, yeah, it was a pretty dark place. I was definitely in a dark place. It’s not how I wanted it, or how I perceived it was going to happen. I would have been accepting had it of been a vote-out, but being out of the control of my hands and being a freak accident, there were a lot of questions. Why me? If something like this was going to happen, why did God even allow me to go and participate in this? But on the second or third day, Jeff called me in the hospital…and he was very concerned. And it kind of took me out of that dark place, to know that they do care about me, I’m not just somebody who got hurt…for Jeff to take time out of his busy schedule to call me and talk to me, it meant a lot to me.

Michael Darby Charged With Sexual Assault After Grabbing Cameraman’s Butt While Filming Real Housewives Of Potomac
The most scandalous drama really does happen behind-the-scenes on reality TV shows, or at least it does in this case- kind of, sort of. Real Housewives of Potomac star Ashley Darby’s husband Michael Darby was charged with sexual assault.
The claim is that Michael grabbed a cameraman’s butt and this supposedly went down while they were filming an episode of the show. So did anyone catch this one on camera? Will this become a story line on the show?
According to an article from TMZ, cameraman Orville Palmer says that Michael grabbed him and even threw a “flirtatious look” his way while doing so during the incident that took place on September 1. The cameraman told Michael to stop before going to a supervisor.
Gizelle Bryant Says Michael Darby Is “100% Messy”
He has been charged with a felony assault and a misdemeanor for improper sexual contact. The maximum punishment is 11 years in prison. There’s no doubt that there are several Real Housewives of Potomac group chats and in-person discussions about this incident. As of this moment, neither Michael nor Ashley has spoken out about the allegations.

Big Brother 20’s Tyler Crispen and Brett Robinson to Appear on The Bold and the Beautiful
Every year, The Bold and the Beautiful selects a few Big Brother houseguests to appear on the series. These houseguests usually start to make their appearances on the hit soap opera at the end of October, usually for the start of a Halloween special. During Big Brother 17, talk of who would appear on The Bold and the Beautiful was a major topic of discussion.
Since Big Brother 11, at least one Big Brother alumni has been selected each season. Past houseguests to appear on the Bold and the Beautiful have included Rachel Reilly, Jason Roy, Da’Vonne Rogers, Jeff Schroeder, Jordan Lloyd, Jessica Graf, and Cody Nickson. The list of Big Brother houseguests acting on The Bold and the Beautiful have gotten smaller as the years continue. Last year, only Jessica and Cody were asked on the series. Jessica also made history by having a regular gig as a waitress on the show for a few episodes.
This year, it appears that Bold and the Beautiful have become even more selective. Tyler Crispen and Brett Robinson are the only confirmed Big Brother 20 houseguests set to appear on the show. This may change in the future, but right now they’re the only two. During Tyler’s post-finale interview with Entertainment Weekly, it was revealed to Tyler that he was asked to appear on the soap opera along with Brett.
Of course, Tyler was ecstatic and in shock about this opportunity. Tyler and Brett’s episode airs on October 23, 2018. According to EW, in the episode Tyler and Brett play guys who “owned a high tech robotic startup, have sold their company, and now focus of philanthropic endeavors.”

Tamra Judge Does Not Want Gretchen Rossi & Slade Smiley To Testify Against Her In Jim Bellino Lawsuit
Sometimes the real drama happens away from the camera in the Real Housewives franchise. Case in point, Real Housewives of Orange County alum Alexis Bellino’s ex Jim Bellino is suing Tamra Judge and Shannon Beador for $1 million dollars in response to comments they made about him during a podcast interview.
As if that was not absurd enough, former Real Housewives of Orange County cast members Gretchen Rossi and her fiance Slade Smiley volunteered to testify against Tamra and Shannon, even though they have absolutely nothing to do with this case. At all. Although Gretchen now claims they were subpoenaed to do so.
Understandably, Tamra asked a judge to not allow Gretchen and Slade to testify against her and Shannon, according to court documents obtained by The Blast.
Shannon Beador Files Response To Jim Bellino’s Lawsuit Against Her & Tamra Judge
Tamra says that Jim’s case is based on “foundationless, conclusory hearsay” from Gretchen and Slade. Tamra also says that Gretchen has “no role in the case”- duh. This is just ridiculous. Jim is making this whole situation so much more dramatic than it ever needed to be.
Tamra and Shannon’s initial podcast comments did not gain much traction, but Jim is really making this whole thing a way bigger deal.

Gina Kirschenheiter Says Vicki Gunvalson Was “Beyond Insulting And Hurtful”
That last episode of Real Housewives of Orange County really got out of hand. The OG of the OC Vicki Gunvalson had the nerve to tell Gina Kirschenheiter that she has “no moral compass” because of their differing religious beliefs and Gina’s decision to divorce.
Vicki barely knows Gina, yet here she is completely assassinating her character while she’s embarking on the beginning of a divorce. Religious beliefs aside, it’s clear to anyone watching that Vicki really did upset Gina. She had to get up to go cry in the bathroom and call her ex-husband, of all people.
Gina opened up about Vicki’s antics in a Bravo blog post. Vicki had the audacity to say that Gina was “nonchalant” about getting divorced. Really, Vicki? Now Gina is sharing how she felt during Vicki’s verbal attacks.
Gina wrote, “Obviously opening up to Vicki has prompted a response of immediate judgment and ridicule. Not only is she non-understanding, but she doesn’t even try to see my standpoint at all. If the other women don’t understand my decision that’s their problem, not mine. If they want to believe something else is going on, so be it.” Why would someone be offended by a virtual stranger’s divorce? The whole premise of this show is to discuss each other’s lives, so I get why they were talking about the split, but Vicki’s judgments were over the top and unnecessary.
Gina continued, “I cannot be concerned with the negative judgments of others regarding on my life. I will make my own decisions for my own family, and I will stand by them. Vicki doesn’t understand my decision. It was super disappointing to not be heard.”

Then Gina addressed Vicki’s claim that she lacks a “moral compass.” She wrote, “I pretty much said what I had to say that night. She sounded like an idiot. It was a stupid thing to say. I mean it was obviously just on a basic level cruel to tell a girl going through a hard time that she has no morals. That’s just mean.” Yes, it is and Vicki probably doesn’t even realize, not after thirteen seasons of pulling these antics.
Gina explained, “I am here telling you I am making a decision for my family based off of love and respect and doing what I need to in order to keep that love and respect in my family life, and you’re telling me my morals are off. You would think that someone who has gone through several divorces would be the most compassionate for my situation.”Exactly! This could have been a bonding moment for Vicki and Gina. She could have provided some personal insight in a kind way. Instead, she went out of the way to insult Gina and make her even more upset than she already was.
Gina concluded, “I really thought Vicki would have been more supportive and understanding in this situation, and I was left in total shock. It was beyond insulting and hurtful.” Yes, it was. Vicki better apologize during the reunion. Or in her own blog post. Or on social media. Or in whatever medium she is comfortable with, not that Vicki has ever been comfortable with apologies.

Real Housewives Of Dallas Recap: Baby KangaRude
Every episode of Real Housewives Of Dallas is like a game of Fast and Furious – it’s action-packed, moves like a designer-dressed ninja squad (or Mean Girls the never grown up years) and by the end of the day they’re all friends and wearing monogrammed pajamas. At least no K-Cups were harmed in the making of this episode; baby kangaroos on the other hand…
Stephanie Hollman decided that after these girls smashed heavy artillery and saw what it was like to work for a living – I mean, can Jesus fix a broken nail?! – they all need a recuperating spa day. Also, she hopes to smash back down any bad feelings which popped up in their therapeutic bashing session.
I mean, nice idea, Stephanie but there’s no way Brandi Redmond is forgetting how LeeAnne Locken and Kameron Westcott called her a bad influence and warned D’Andra Simmons away from her. Besides, all that “talk” started at the rodeo with LeeAnne having a little pep talk with Kameron about the type of gal Brandi is!
The first thing on the spa party agenda is to hire hot male models to act as servers and distractions so these girls will be too blinded by six-packs to notice each other. Brandi and Stephanie lose their composure at the first twitching muscle and all shirts are off! Literally. Then came the cutest, most exciting reveal of all – a baby kangaroo (who was attached to a scrawny Pee-Wee Herman of a kangaroo wrangler. The biggest thing on his body were enormous white veneers. That guy was creepy but anything for baby kangas. Also, I am with LeeAnne that is SO NOT LEGAL. PETA, where are you?!)
While Stephanie and Brandi were hardly working, Kameron learned what “Net-Work-IIIING” is and is excited to tell Court about all her successes at the Global Pet Expo. Court patiently explains that people touching your pink kibble does not equate to a doggy delicacy distribution deal so time may be up on Kam’s dream of being a pink-tepreneur.
Kameron still sees herself as a visionary businesswoman who can inspire other women to take a chance on spending their husband’s money to start companies, which is why she goes to support LeeAnn’s photoshoot for the infinity dress of many sleeves. This multiple personalities dress is literally the clothing version of LeeAnne, and some of those um, personalities (like the random ONE red ruffled sleeve or the black with the red cape) look more like bad Halloween costumes than anything one might wear seriously. The color combo was way too generic casino hostess.
The real reason Kameron was at the photoshoot was to talk crap about Cary Deuber, who she thinks is two-faced and goes along with whomever she’s with. Like was Cary really trying to say Brandi isn’t a bad influence when she soooo clearly is! Whatever Kam – as Brandi herself said, you’re friends with LeeAnne, and D’Andra hasn’t turned batshit being around her! YET.
LeeAnne is miffed because she was trying to do some behind-the-back maneuvering and get Cary indoctrinated into the cult of personality that is LeeAnne, but instead, Cary told D’Andra that LeeAnne was gossiping about her finances under the guise of being concerned. Cary only did what LeeAnne asked – she talked to D’Andra to make sure she’s OK with being broke, but now LeeAnne feels she can’t trust Cary with important things. Girl – you can’t! You and Cary had one make-up coffee and a massage together, BFF and confidantes you are not until you share cheesecake on the lanai. I personally think Cary did the right thing in blowing up LeeAnne’s manipulation by doing exactly what LeeAnne suggested she do – reach out to D’Andra as a friend. Except LeeAnne predicted Cary would just go around and tell all the other ladies then LeeAnne could cry that she told Cary in confidence but was betrayed.
Like an errant cape attached to a dress of many polyester accessories, LeeAnne’s bullshit is blowing in the wind and going all over the place. However, for now, LeeAnne is going to apologize to D’Andra – publicly – and pretend she’s not upset with Cary.
Apparently, Brandi has a clothing like called Brandiland so she’s having pop up shows all over Dallas. Everyone marvels at how Brandi has time to raise THREE kids, plus design and sew an entire collection of clothing BY. HER. SELF. What is in that Jesus Juice?! Kam aspires to be such a success at both motherhood and business if only Court would stop treating her like their third child and accept that she can do things on her own. Like this one time, Kameron actually boiled water, you guys and no. one. died.
Even though Kameron supports Brandi’s businessland, she has hesitations about visiting Brandiland, because polyester makes her nose twitch, but she needs to talk to Cary about how Cary is a bad friend, so she sucks it up, buys a teal-colored muumuu and smiles politely while trying not to touch it too much. Good thing Kam wore her protective rubber suit underneath! It’s basically like the raincoat Cary put on her purse, which she kept referring to as “she” like it’s another child. D’Andra, who has seen A LOT of crazy in her day, even looked creeped out.
Brandiland is perfect for D’Andra though because after LeeAnne stole $4 from her piggy bank to buy Chinese hair extensions, she has only $196 left in her shopping account! LeeAnne is not impressed – she classifies all of Brandi’s clothes as “cuuuuuuuuute” with a sneer. What personality was up the sleeve of your wonder dress today?
While Brandi is bopping around pedaling “Mom. Wife. Boss” high-low tees to anyone with a pulse (including, I think, Cary’s purse), Kameron grabs Cary for a chat. It went like this “Giiiiirl, in beaver creek you said Stephanie was wrong for accusing me of bashing a baby, but then the next day said I drove her to it. And I DID. NOT.” Flashbacks show Cary agreeing that Stephanie shouldn’t have said “bash” and then the next day reiterating to Kameron that Stephanie shouldn’t have said “bash” but also reminding Kam that she kept bashing the baby point over and over and over until the only person behaving like a baby was herself.
While explaining this Cary starts mild finger-waving to illustrate her point and Kameron is aghast. Fingers have like GERMS which cannot be near Kam’s perfect plasticine Barbie skin! Hilariously when Kam starts arguing back that she thinks Cary was on her side until she went to talk to Stephanie and Brandi, she pulls out her own finger to wave in the air, but Kameron keeps hers lower – away from the face – so it’s safe and therefore socially acceptable. Cary throws up her hands in the air and calls Stephanie over for some support, but quick as one can move in 200lbs of flammable acetate maxi dress, Kameron canceled the discussion and walked away. Stephanie is confused and just wants to get back to her wine; Cary is confused and just wants to get back to reassuring her purse, and Kameron is running across the room to her safe space with LeeAnne and D’Andra, who are in a discussion of their own.
After D’andra jokes about being broke, LeeAnne starts tearfully apologizing that she would rather hurt herself with these WORDS THAT ARE JUST DAGGERS, instead of with these hands which are just covered by red and white gloves as part of her manic dress and therefore no one can tell she committed the crime. D’Andra is upset because she doesn’t want people like Kameron – socialites who know nothing of financial difficulties – knowing what’s going on with her business and, she expected LeeAnne, of all people to understand being embarrassed about your money straights. D’Andra isn’t buying LeeAnne’s crocodile tears either, just as LeeAnne doesn’t truly believe D’Adnra was upset she told people that her Starbucks account was running low!
Um, D’Andra needs to get over herself! What she really doesn’t want is people thinking she’s a failure and that Mama Dee is correct that she’s a spoiled little girl who’s done nothing but live off her parents’ success.
D’Andra Does Not Believe LeeAnne’s Apology Was Sincere; Slams Her “Career”
After witnessing LeeAnne’s apology Kameron is inspired to try again with Cary. This time she’s honest in explaining that she’s actually upset because she’s been friends with Cary for 8 years yet never feels Cary truly has her back – especially around Brandi and Stephanie. Like when they chased her around with a dildo last season and Cary laughed! Kameron is apparently still in therapy for PTSD over the incident. To prove to Kam that she is a good friend Cary throws Brandi under the bus reveals that Brandi planned to give Kam “Stressticles” in Beaver Creek (balls-shaped stress squeezers) but Cary talked her out of it. This is the most friendship worthy thing Kameron can ever imagine, and she is thrilled.
Later, in front of Brandi, Kameron teases that she heard all about the stressticle plan and is so relieved she has friends like Cary who understand decorum and class and were able to stop that travesty of a plan from becoming a reality. Brandi is shocked and hurt because she came to that decision all on her own, but now Cary is making Kameron think she’s responsible for being the morality police – and just when Brandi is trying to prove to Kam that she’s not a bad influence!
After the Brandiland event, Brandi confides to Stephanie that she’s really hurt by Cary and she’s tired of everyone making her out to be this redheaded stepchild they have to put up with, but don’t really like. Except for Stephanie – she may be forging a friendship-ish with LeeAnne and trying to get to know her on her own terms, but Brandi will forever be her soulmate.
Why do I feel like Stephanie is gonna get a hard wakeup call about what type of New LeeAnne she’s really seeing? I think that’s look #116, and ironically the Infinity Dress is not too different from the Harley Quinn Two-Faced costume LeeAnne wore to Stephanie’s Halloween party the previous year. A costume that was supposed to be her representation of Stephanie! Hmmmm… What we don’t like in others we often see in ourselves – LeeAnne has been in therapy for more years than I’ve been alive, so she should know that! But who knows -maybe LeeAnne is trying to turn over a new leaf, and D’Andra is sabotaging her?
Feeling victorious LeeAnne invites Stephanie to lunch with Kameron and herself. They’re probably trying to get Steph out of Brandi’s bad influence clutches and save her soul!
Only Brandi, Cary, and LeeAnne can attend Stephanie’s spa party, which was so cute. Stephanie had tiaras and monogrammed PJ’s for every woman and her bathroom literally looks like a 5-star hotel with a jacuzzi inside it and multiple rooms, including a sound-resistant toilet chamber. Stephanie doesn’t want Travis to know she goes poop, does she?
The highlight of everything though was the appearance of baby kangaroo. Which if, for a second, you can put aside the questionable use of animals was sooo exciting.
Stephanie and LeeAnne get massages to talk about why Kameron doesn’t like Brandi – apparently Kam feels judged by Brandi – and meanwhile, Brandi confronts Cary over manicures. First Cary apologizes for making it seem like Brandi is incapable of making good decisions when it comes to stressticles, but then Cary explains ho she was trying to prove to Kam that she also has her back. Brandi understands this, then they both laugh about how arguing about Stressticles is the stupidest thing ever. This is why I love this show. This is how real friends act.
Brandi is still upset about her relationship with Kameron though and believes the real reason Kameron doesn’t like her is because LeeAnne is putting thoughts in her head and trying to turn Kameron against her. Cary keeps her mouth shut and listens, but warns Brandi that she’s done keeping secrets.
I applaud Cary’s efforts at transparency, but um, she does realize there’s a difference between keeping secrets and just repeating everything everyone says to her, thus becoming both a gossip and an untrustworthy friend. I think Cary’s plan is gonna backfire and she’ll find herself on the outs with everyone.
I should also note I think LeeAnne’s dress is a great idea, but maybe out of 157 looks, 140 of them being ruffled isn’t so chic. Also the red, black, white combo gives me pause.
