Natalie Maines has reignited a long-running political feud with a blunt swipe at Donald Trump. This prompted a personal attack from the White House. The exchange also brings renewed attention to The Chicks’ history of challenging presidents and refusing to stay quiet about politics.

What the White House said about The Chicks singer Natalie Maines

Davis Ingle, a White House spokesperson, responded to Natalie Maines’ criticism in a statement to Entertainment Weekly. He accused the singer of suffering from “Trump Derangement Syndrome” and attacked her intelligence, calling her a “despicable nobody” with a “peanut-sized brain.”

The controversy recalls the intense backlash Maines endured in 2003, when she criticized then-President George W. Bush while performing in London. At the time, she expressed opposition to the war and said she was ashamed that the president came from Texas. The comments triggered intense criticism, including demands that the country group’s members stick to music rather than politics.

During a recent Manhattan concert, Maines revisited that episode, saying she would never bow to pressure to “shut up and sing.” She also joked that she would now give Bush a “big wet kiss” before declaring that she was ashamed the president came from the United States.

The Chicks have turned Maines’ latest remark into merchandise, selling T-shirts bearing the line about being ashamed of the president’s American origins. Maines told The New York Times that the band knew its fans would embrace the design. She said it had become the group’s second-best-selling shirt, behind its tour merchandise. Maines also acknowledged that the 2003 controversy remains part of the band’s legacy, saying, “I’m fine with it. Still stand behind it.”

Bandmates Emily Strayer and Martie Maguire discussed how female country performers face reactions to their political views. Strayer pointed to Maren Morris as an artist who has faced ostracism over her positions, while Maguire praised Kacey Musgraves’ irreverent honesty and supportive fan base. “She’s so funny, and she’s always been irreverent in that way and honest in that way,” Maguire said.

Vicki Gunvalson Has a Real Problem on RHOC Season 20

Vicki Gunvalson returned to The Real Housewives of Orange County for Season 20. While fans expected her to whoop it up for the landmark season, Vicki has instead been labeled a “Debbie Downer.” Of course, she is dealing with severe knee pain, so she deserves some grace for her medical issues.

Besides being obsessed with her work and ignoring her RHOC co-stars, Vicki has also been making some unkind comments. Normally, fans enjoy some drama on Real Housewives.

However, when the comments escalate to mom-shaming, a line has been crossed. And the “OG of the OC” has vaulted over this barrier repeatedly during Season 20.

During RHOC Season 20 Episode 15, the tension between Vicki and Tamra Judge boiled over in Tokyo. Tamra was hurt by Vicki’s comments about her relationship with her estranged daughter, Sidney Barney. In 2024, Vicki went on her podcast and slammed Tamra as a mom.

And to make matters worse, Tamra claimed that Vicki never apologized to her. “That’s the lowest of lows that you can say about another woman,” Emily Simpson stated. When Tamra finally confronted Vicki about her mom-shaming comments, Vicki responded, “That was wrong. So, whatever I said, I’m sorry.”

An emotional Tamra replied, “You called me a horrible mom. You called me a mom that chose fame over my own daughter.” Unfortunately for Vicki, Tamra brought the topic up again. Vicki’s decision to double all the way down during a car ride was a choice.

“Tamra has a sharp tongue, and this is what Sidney was … talking about. All I know is what Sidney said publicly,” Vicki said in a flashback from the previous night.

Naturally, Tamra pointed out that Vicki keeps “going after people as mothers.” And, as usual, Vicki denied the accusation. She may want to watch Season 20, as she also repeatedly insulted Carmella Garcia’s parenting.

At one point, Vicki shaded Carmella for leaving her 14-year-old daughter when she was ill. Mom-shaming is never okay, and this behavior has tainted Vicki’s return to the series. As a mother, Vicki should know better than to insult someone’s parenting. And dragging co-stars’ children into the fray doesn’t sit well with some viewers.

The Real Housewives of Orange County airs on Thursdays, 8/7c on Bravo. It streams on Peacock the next day.
