Colin Jost built his punchline around an unlikely awards comparison. He joked that Donald Trump had done so much fighting that the country was running short of missiles. Yet, Trump still imagined the Nobel committee would reward him. Jost added that it is similar to expecting an Oscar for appearing in the widely criticized 2021 film Tom and Jerry (via The Daily Beast).
The segment followed Trump’s attack on Nobel Peace Prize winner Navi Pillay at a recent rally. Trump dismissed Pillay as a liberal United Nations figure whom, he claimed, “nobody had heard of.” Jost said the president appeared “genuinely angry” that the committee had chosen someone else, besides him.
Jost also returned to criticism of Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s proposed Department of War branding. He said the new logo has an angular eagle resembling Nazi imagery, then mocked Hegseth’s attempt to gauge the controversy. Jost raised his arm in a gesture reminiscent of a Nazi salute before pleading with those watching, “Don’t GIF it, guys.”
Co-anchor Michael Che tackled another contentious announcement, joking about plans to livestream the execution of the Fort Hood shooter. His reference to the last public execution in the United States drew groans from some audience members. Che acknowledged the reaction, saying, “I ruined the fun.”
Che soon won louder laughter with another joke, this time about ICE agents reportedly preparing to make use of shock gloves. He quipped that the devices could cause painful consequences for an agent who “forgot to remove them before using a urinal.”
