Sister Wives Star Janelle Brown’s First Marriage: Everything We Know

Kody Brown isn’t the only one with multiple marriages under his belt. In the Sister Wives family, more than one Brown has been married more than once. Robyn Brown, the patriarch’s favorite, was married for years before becoming the fourth wife. And even Janelle Brown, arguably the most loyal of the bunch, had walked down the aisle previously. But who is the mother of six’s first husband? Let’s find out.

Who was Janelle Brown’s first husband?

Janelle married her first husband when she was 20 years old, Adam Clark Barber, in 1988. However, their marriage was short-lived and ended in 1990. The couple were married on December 8 at the Salt Lake City LDS Temple. For the two years that they lived in wedded bliss, they made their home in Sandy, Utah. The wedding announcement at the time also showed that Janelle had attended Bringham Young University. Adam was one of 26 siblings and was the brother of Meri Brown, which for a time meant the two women were sisters-in-law before Janelle joined the polygamous clan. Not much is known about Adam. Sadly, in October 2023, the brother of Meri passed away

His obituary read that he “passed away at home after a brave 10-month fight with pancreatic cancer on October 5, 2023, surrounded by family. He was born in Oakland, CA, to William “Bill” James Barber Jr. and Bonnie Joyce Ahlstrom. Adam’s childhood in California spurred a lifelong love for Mickey Mouse and the LA Dodgers; he loved building traditions with his family in Disneyland and watching baseball games.” During his life, Adam listed in the United States Air Force and retired at the rank of MSgt in the 419th Fighter Wing Security Forces at Hill Air Force Base

Adam Barber was married multiple times

Adam had worked as a manager at a Lehi Jimmy Johns location. After his divorce from Janelle, Adam found the love of his life, Tammy. The duo married on June 6, 2014. According to the obituary, “Their connection was a bond unbroken and spoke to the enduring power of love in the face of adversity.” Janelle wrote about her first husband in the Brown Family’s 2012 book Becoming Sister Wives. She noted, “Unfortunately, Adam and I had problems right from the start. We weren’t spiritually, emotionally, or romantically compatible.”

Janelle wrote, “We lived together for only six months before he moved out. Although my husband and I had separated, I remained close to his family, including Adam’s sister Meri (little did I know how close we’d eventually become).” According to the Sister Wives star, “Adam was not completely committed to his fundamentalist faith, and I was happy to welcome him to the LDS church. Not long after he converted, we began courting. Soon we were married in the temple, but my husband wasn’t really interested in either his new faith or the branch of fundamentalism he had been raised in. In fact, he had very little spiritual conviction.”

Janelle Brown speaks about her Sister Wives past

Last week Janelle spoke out on the Reality Life with Kate Casey podcast and opened up about her life with Adam. The host joked that the union might have been a “starter marriage” for both of them. And Janelle laughed replying, “It was very, very short-lived. It probably really qualifies.” The 55-year-old added, “it just didn’t take.” The mother of six was happy to be invited to join the Browns in 1993 and never looked back.

Janelle eventually married Kody in 1993. She shared, “I pretty much made the decision to join the faith….but I was not at Meri’s house all the time. I mean, I was there occasionally. I just happened to be there one time when Kody came. And I already was intrigued with the faith. It represented something a little more dynamic or something more robust than the traditional LDS faith I had.” And as they say, the rest is history. Cupid’s arrow found Janelle, as she shared, “When I met Kody just in passing, Meri introduced us. I go, ‘Oh,’ I had sort of a feeling. Like, ‘Oh, there you are.’”

90 Day Fiancé: The Other Way Season 6 Winners and Losers

After four long months, 90 Day Fiancé: The Other Way Season 6 has come to an end. The only episodes left this season will be those of the two-part Tell All. Season 6 featured six diverse couples, two of whom viewers had seen before. Shekinah Garner and Sarper Guven returned following their debut on The Other Way Season 5. On the other hand, Statler Riley and Dempsey Wilkinson switched to The Other Way following their time on 90 Day Fiancé: Before The 90 Days

James Solis and Meitalia Tantri Solis were one of four new couples this season, who attempted an unsuccessful move to Indonesia. Corona Blakey ran into similar troubles with her Icelandic boyfriend Ingi Hilmar. Joanne DiGesu also faced problems by hiding her marriage to her Irish husband Sean from her family. Finally, Josh risked it all to move to China for his wife Lily.

While some couples had successful stories this season, others didn’t. Two couples came out in the middle, and two emerged as the season’s winners, with two unfortunately as the losers.

90 Day Fiancé: The Other Way, Shekinah and Sarper – Winners

Surprisingly, Shekinah and Sarper emerged as one of the winning couples this season. Shekinah moved to Turkey during Season 5, however, she returned to America briefly to work. At the start of Season 6, she and Sarper had an emotional reunion. Despite a major fight that resulted in Shekinah temporarily moving out, the couple worked through things.

At the end of the season, Sarper decided it was time for him to propose to Shekinah. It was one of the most romantic 90 Day Fiancé proposals I’d ever seen. Sarper took Shekinah on a boat and projected her name onto the bridge between Europe and Asia. Shekinah happily accepted and the two ended the season with an engagement ceremony. While the couple may be slightly controversial at times, there is no doubt that these two truly love one another.

Joanne and Sean – Winners

The other winning couple of the season are Joanne and Sean. While they were the last pair introduced this season, their story quickly picked up momentum. Joanne explained that she had met Sean online and eventually traveled to Ireland to meet him. After meeting in person a few times, the couple decided to secretly get married. During the season, they revealed the news to their kids and loved ones, which received mixed reactions.

At the end of the season, Joanne revealed to Sean that she wasn’t ready to move to Ireland. She admitted she needed more time as her kids were still processing things. However, in the preview for Tell All, Sean is in America with Joanne. It seems like the pair found a way to work through things to make their marriage work. Joanne and Sean were also the only couple this season who didn’t really argue. They stressed over their living situation, but they never had any major issues with one another.

90 Day Fiancé: The Other Way, Statler and Dempsey – Losers

The first losing couple of the season are Statler and Dempsey. After leaving her home in Texas, Statler decided to buy a van with Dempsey to travel around Europe. This resulted in many problems for the pair, including multiple arguments over finances. Statler felt that she was contributing more than Dempsey, and worried that she was being used. Dempsey, on the other hand, felt frustrated dealing with Statler’s anxiety and was impatient with her.

The last we saw of Statler and Dempsey was their conversation deciding what to do going forward. Statler expressed that she wanted to put a time limit on things, to see if things could improve between them. However, as viewers now know, Statler and Dempsey have broken up. The two have been engaged in an online feud for months, with Statler claiming that Dempsey cheated on her. Neither woman will appear at the Tell All, which hints at them possibly having been fired by TLC.

Corona and Ingi – Losers

The second losing couple from Season 6 are Corona and Ingi. At the beginning of the season, a few things seemed off between these two. Corona revealed that she was giving up a spot in a prestigious midwifery program to move to Iceland. Ingi, on the other hand, emphasized that he wasn’t anywhere close to being ready for marriage.

Throughout the season, Corona and Ingi began to realize their differences. At the end of the season, Corona told Ingi that she was considering returning to the US for school. While Ingi seemed open to making things work, it looks like that unfortunately didn’t happen. The Tell All preview shows the entire cast including Corona hanging up on Ingi, implying that they’ve since broken up. While Corona seems angry at Ingi, he doesn’t appear to understand why she’s so upset.
