Survivor: Island Of The Idols Episode 13 Recap: Another ‘Incident’ Overshadows The Game
Please, make it stop. This season of Survivor has been a painful one to watch from an entertainment standpoint, with controversies involving inappropriate touching (among other heavy topics) clouding what should otherwise be a fun night of weekly escapism. Instead of discussing strategy or simply enjoying ourselves, we’ve been pulled into the terrible circumstances, and like it’s stuck in some sort of quicksand, the more Survivor tries to rise above the mess, the further down it seems to go this season.
Tonight was one twist ending for the ages, and we’ll get to it all. We’ll also set the stage for next week’s Finale Episode, a day that – at this point – I think we’re all looking forward to.
As I do at the beginning of every recap, please heed the following: Remember that this recap assumes that you have already seen this week’s episode of Survivor: Island of the Idols. If you have not and don’t want to be spoiled, please come back later! It’s important to add that while we WILL hit on all of the important developments of the episode, this is not a linear “blow-by-blow” recap. It is more of a discussion and reaction of what we just witnessed together.
CLICK THE CONTINUE READING BUTTON FOR MORE, AND THIS IS YOUR LAST *SPOILER* WARNING!
Tonight we mourned the exit of fan-favorite Elaine Stott, who wasn’t able to save herself from getting her torch snuffed, and we also mourned the absolute death of this season…a season that was hanging on by threads to begin with. With all the situations involving Dan Spilo this season, I was holding out hope that the show would end with a constructive discussion that took up the entirety of the Live Reunion Show…I imagined Jeff sitting down with Dan, and Dan perhaps using his actions as a positive learning moment for those watching. I thought maybe the victims – including contestant Kellee Kim – would confront Dan face-to-face in a constructive setting, to perhaps get the closure they deserve, or at the least, have their moment to confront Dan and tell him directly what damage he’s done. I say “hanging on by threads” because with all that has happened, I foolishly kept holding on to the slim possibility that maybe there was some sort of silver lining to all of this, that maybe there was some impossible outcome that might have led to everyone leaving this season feeling not that they “liked” the season, but that it didn’t completely tarnish the legacy of the show.
I’m sad to report that I think that ship has sailed now that Dan was removed from the game, for yet another “incident” on the island. I know that I wasn’t alone it audibly gasping when the show didn’t end with Tribal Council…I quickly checked my DVR to make sure that this wasn’t some two-hour episode that I had forgotten about. That little scene at the end – the morning of Day 36 – started with Jeff Probst coming to the camp, which in and of itself is NEVER a good sign. He then told the remaining five players that Dan had been removed from the game completely…out of the game, not on the jury, do not pass Go, do not collect $200. The episode ended with the following graphic on the screen: “Dan was removed from the game after a report of another incident which happened off-camera and did not involve a player.”
Well it sure as hell didn’t involve a coconut, or a fish, or a machete. The fact that they use the word “another” in this graphic means that it was clearly an act of “inappropriate touching” or perhaps worse. And that it didn’t involve a player can only mean that it involved a member of the crew, as there is simply nobody else out there that it could have been.
If you’re like me, you quickly jumped to the internet for some answers. What the heck did Dan do? When did he do it? What was said? How did Dan react to his ejection? Like many of you, I also am a fan of the show and I do read a select number of other Survivor columnists, and EW’s Dalton Ross is of course the Roger Ebert of Survivor journalism. His weekly question-and-answer article with Jeff Probst is a must read, and I’ll save you some time if you haven’t already sought it out: Jeff Probst basically says nothing to Dalton about this “incident” even when pressed for some more specifics. He’s either limited in what he can say due to pending litigation (which seems the most likely to me) or he’s saving any and all official reaction for the Reunion Show next week (less likely, but plausible). Either way, the viewers are left to scratch their head and wonder what went on, if everybody is OK and what this means moving forward.
By the way, I say “Reunion Show” and not “Live Reunion Show” because it was announced earlier today that for the first time in the show’s history, the traditional Reunion Show following the two-hour Finale Episode will not be aired live, but instead will be shot “live-to-tape” several hours earlier in California. The decision not to have the show aired live was due to the sensitive topics that have been raised this season in addition to security concerns. To the viewer at home, you may not notice much of a difference, because it will still be shot in the same format as before, only we now know that what we are watching occurred much earlier. This is just another bad look for a show that should be on the verge of celebrating its 20th Anniversary, and instead it has many of us wondering about its future. So where does Survivor go from here?
The short answer is that this is one ugly spell. If Survivor is a “microcosm” of society as it is often referred as, then put in baseball terms, Season 39 could be considered the “steroid era”…a brutal and disgusting stretch of history that doesn’t reflect the overall game as a whole, but whose damage to the game’s legacy cannot be undone. Island of the Idols will forever be a black-eye on the “sport” of Survivor, and does anybody even care at this point who comes out on “top” of all this?
First and foremost, you care about the real people that were affected by Dan‘s actions. Moving to a game level, if you’re a mega-fan of Survivor, you care about the game’s integrity. Someone will technically “win” this season, but the stink is already on everyone and it won’t easily wash off. At this point it seems attractive to just want to turn the page and cleanse our palates, and I assure you, Season 40 is right around the corner and will be well-received to put it mildly. But this is seriously damaging, and my hopes that somehow, someway, this show would be able to pick up the pieces and make something of itself this season all went away following that final graphic. I do still hold out hope that some good can come of all of this, and here’s hoping that next week’s Finale and Reunion Show lands as a positive, and not yet another negative.
Adding insult to injury, we lost one of the most endearing and charismatic contestants of the past several seasons in Elaine tonight. Her send-off was maybe one of the most clearly orchestrated in the show’s history…once she started crying and getting into her personal life at Tribal, pretty much everybody knew that she was a goner. You don’t get air-time like that and stay in the game. Watching Elaine go was a kick in the teeth, but then to find out that Dan was pulled soon after just seemed like a punch to the gut.
For those that still care, Dan‘s removal has major consequences in the game moving forward. Not only does his removal rob us from Dean being able to play his fake Legacy Advantage at six (there is no longer a “six” now that we skipped ahead to five), but it throws off the entire dynamic of the remaining contestants…which simply put, isn’t fair to them or their game (thus, the steroid era comparison). We know that at Final Four the Immunity Challenge winner gets a ticket to the Final Three, and gets to essentially pick who makes fire and who gets seated next to them. We also know from tonight’s episode that Tommy, Dan and Dean had forged a Final Three alliance, but that’s now shot. The duo of Tommy and Lauren still are the season’s power couple, but no one is going to want to sit next to Janet. Janet will 100% play her Idol at the next Tribal (she has to or it goes away), but now that Dean has an Idol Nullifyer, the game is really in Tommy’s hands: You have to think that both Lauren and Dean wan to take him to the end, and with knowledge of Dean’s Nullifyer, Janet could be toast. Tommy has the physical advantage in challenges, and even if Dean were to win over him and was interested in breaking up the power couple, it’s likely that he’d vote out Lauren, not Tommy, who he is closer to and let’s face it, has a better shot against.
So we assume there’s no way Noura can win the final jury vote, and we’re assuming there’s no way Janet even gets there. So basically Tommy and Lauren got this in the bag, right, with Tommy having slightly better odds given his physical dominance and his close alliance to Dean?
And oh yeah I almost forgot…does anybody still care given all the crap that’s gone on this season outside of the normal game?
So what does two-time Survivor legend Erik Reichenbach have to say about tonight’s penultimate episode? Check out his artwork below, featured here exclusively on RealityTea, and visit his site, Dabudoodles.com.
Episode Take-Away: Well I’m a bit miffed on a personal level, because it is becoming clear as day to me that I was misled by CBS this season…their ruse that they were “cutting back” on exit interviews this season clearly had nothing to do with staffing, and everything to do with the terrible controversy and PR nightmare that this season has become. It was made even more clear when a few other prominent Survivor writers “retired” recently and they didn’t fill their spots with two new press members. Would it have been so bad to just – in a very generic way – tell me that I wasn’t getting interviews this season because Survivor was going to be hitting on some extremely sensitive topics this season? CBS should shoulder the blame for much of this mess, with how they handled the incidents inside the game and how they handled dealing with it outside the game as well. And let us not forget too that this cast and season marks the first time Survivor was without their long-time Casting Director, Lynne Spillman. Coincidence, that the show would blow up like this after losing her watchful eye for on-air potential?
I guess it’s good news that Dan will not be winning this season, but as far as I’m concerned there are no winners this season. It takes a lot to turn me off to Survivor, and at this point I wish I could just pull the plug and wake up from it all. We’ve got three more hours to go…next week’s two-hour Finale Episode and Live…er…just Reunion Show, and I’m certain there will be lots more to discuss. But man has this season been depleting.
Voted out this week: Elaine. Also Dan was removed from the game following “another incident.”
Won Immunity: Dean (1)
Vote: No Idols or advantages were played. 5 – Elaine (Noura, Tommy, Lauren, Dean, Janet), 2 – Noura (Elaine, Dan)
Next Week’s Episode – Season Finale: It finally comes to an end. Let’s keep staring at the train-wreck and see if there’s anything worth pulling from the wreckage.

Waiting for new Vanderpump Rules episodes is killing me. Is it January 7 yet? Unfortunately, it is not. However, fans can fill the void by watching Pump Rules repeats and by reading Tom Sandoval and Ariana Madix’s new book. And by “reading,” I mean trying out every single drink recipe and making some questionable decisions after. Tom and Ariana even included some hangover remedies in the book, so they really do provide you with everything you need.
Yes, the cocktail book that the couple argued about a few seasons ago is finally here. Fancy AF Cocktails: Drink Recipes from a Couple of Professional Drinkers is the perfect gift for your fun friends… or yourself, which is actually also a gift to others if you make a batch of cocktails from Tom and Ariana’s recipes. The duo has been all over the country promoting their book and it all culminated with last night’s launch party at Skybar at Mondrion Los Angeles.
Tom and Ariana’s co-author Danny Pellegrino was there, of course. And so were some of their Pump Rules co-stars. Tom’s other life partner Tom Schwartz and his wife Katie Maloney were on hand for support.
Tom’s ex-girlfriend and Ariana’s former nemesis Kristen Doute attended the event. Who would have ever thought that these three would get along so well? That just goes to show you that you never know what to expect on Vanderpump Rules. I’m still a little bitter that viewers never got to see Kristen and Ariana become friends, but anyway, moving on.
RELATED: Tom Sandoval
Fellow Pump Rules author Stassi Schroeder and her fiancé Beau Clark went to the launch. Lala Kent, Brittany Cartwright, Scheana Marie, and Peter Madrigal were at the party as well.
Former Vanderpump Rules cast member Billie Lee was there, even though she doesn’t want anything to do with the show. Still, Tom and Ariana are two of the nicest people in the cast (and pretty much the only people who haven’t argued with her), so if she was gonna support anyone, it makes sense that it’s them.

Even some of the new SURvers went, including Danica Dow and Dayna Kathan. I’m not gonna lie, I am having a lot of trouble telling these two apart. They’re both new, blonde, and have names that start with the same letter. This will take me a while to get used to.
Other Bravolebrities came through for the party, aside from the Vanderpump Rules stars. Shahs of Sunset cast members Mercedes “MJ” Javid and Nema Vand sipped on some cocktails with the Vanderpump Crew. Real Housewives of Dallas star LeeAnne Locken celebrated the launch

Tom Sandoval Claims Lisa Vanderpump “F–king Hated” Filming Real Housewives Of Beverly Hills
It’s been nearly half a year since The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills wrapped up Season 9, yet Lisa Vanderpump and her SURvers are still finding ways to talk about her unceremonious exit from the series.
Vanderpump Rules stars Tom Sandoval and Ariana Madix are in the midst of promoting their long-awaited cocktail book, Fancy AF Cocktails, and used the opportunity to dish about their boss’s constant and unending victim mentality while filming RHOBH last year. Well, that is, before she up and quit.
“You’ve got to understand, Lisa fricking hated filming Housewives,” Sandoval told Us Weekly. “She f–cking hated it. I’d be having a conversation with her, and I could see in her head that she’s stressed. She’s like, ‘I have to go film Housewives after this, and it’s really making me miserable.'”
While LVP spent the back half of Season 9 drowning in her own martyrdom, it’s hard to say what made viewers more miserable as she refused to film with the other ‘Wives: suffering through a multi-episode arc of her kitchen renovation or her performance of a well-rehearsed, utterly biased (and don’t forget transphobic) lie detector test to garner sympathy in front of Bravo’s cameras?
RELATED: Tom Sandoval & Ariana Madix Dish On Lisa Vanderpump’s Departure From Real Housewives oF Beverly Hills
However, Tom naturally sided with the boss who signing his TomTom paychecks when it came to the drama in the 90210. “When you’re stressed out about something, you can’t really care about anything,” he said. “It can overtake you.”
For her part, Ariana chimed in to add that Lisa‘s energy felt markedly different while filming the upcoming season of Pump Rules (ahem, you mean the show she has control over as an executive producer?). “On our show — or at least this summer — she was so giving of herself and so open and so willing to kind of put herself out there with us more, with our cast more,” Ariana revealed. “I think that people are really going to enjoy.”

A Lisa Vanderpump that’s so giving? So open? So willing to put herself out there? In the immortal words of Mariah Carey, “I don’t know her.” But since LVP no longer has chess pieces, I mean friends, like Kyle Richards and Dorit Kemsley to lord over as the show’s calculating sniper from the side, it seems fans will have to get used to seeing the self-described queen of hearts slumming it with her employees in the name of good reality television. At least we’ll always have SUR?

Below Deck Star Tanner Sterback Says Rhylee Gerber Was Interested In Everyone But No One Wanted To Sleep With Her
Falling under the category of “No One Asked You,” comes Below Deck’s Tanner Sterback. Who has decided to weigh in on resident bad girl Rhylee Gerber’s interest in Brian de Saint Pern. And like the ass class act he is, he takes it to a juvenile level.
I would expect nothing less from a man who brags about his conquests with Simone Mashile to the other guys. Who knew high fiving after a hook up was something guys did in real life? I thought it was just made for TV douchery.
This season on Below Deck, the deckhands have been struggling to keep up on their workload. They lost Abbi Murphy, who realized in the middle of a charter she hated working on a yacht. Then they had to deal with Brian injuring his knee. Which resulted in him having to endure a gruesome procedure where they had to cut into his knee.
Yet, the biggest upset has been the arrival of Rhylee. Ashton Pienaar can’t stand her because the only women he understands are the ones throwing dollar bills at him. When Rhylee made her entrance, she checked out the male meat market available to her. Her sights landed on Brian who is currently trying to woo Courtney Skippon. Courtney, for her part, is making the menfolk work for her attention. During the last episode, Rhylee made it VERY clear she was more than willing to give Brian a night he won’t forget. Should Brian be afraid?
RELATED: Below Deck Star Brian de Saint Pern Thinks Rhylee Gerber Brings Drama On Purpose; Courtney Skippon Says Everyone Got Along Well Until Rhylee Arrived
Last season Rhylee was successful in her conquests. So, where do things stand this season? Brian and Tanner sat down for the Below Deck After Show to share their thoughts. When asked if he knew Rhylee was interested, Brian began to answer with, “Oh 100%” before Tanner interjected. “She was interested in everyone.” Really? Because so far I have only seen her express an interest in Brian. Is Tanner jealous that he wasn’t in the crosshairs of our redheaded huntress?
“I just think she wanted to get laid,” Tanner said, continuing to answer Brian’s question for him. “But no one wanted to sleep with her. No one was attracted.” Such a gem of a man. Brian jumped back into the conversation to talk about a scene from the show. “She cornered me while we were washing the windows,” Brian explained, “I was like ‘No, I’m with Courtney. I’m not going to do that.”
RELATED: Captain Lee Rosbach Says It Was “In Extremely Poor Taste” When Tanner Sterback Shared Details About Hookup With Simone Mashile On Below Deck
Maybe Brian was trying to soften Tanner’s diss by explaining he was interested in pursuing something with someone else. And wanted to respect that. But Tanner wouldn’t understand that concept. At least we know Rhylee is tough enough to handle anything the men can dish out. And I think we all know she could snap Tanner like a twig.

Real Housewives Of Orange County Recap: Some Fences Are Made To Be Broken
The Real Housewives of Orange County are in Key West, and the drama is off the charts! The Tres Amigas are likely never going to be on good terms with Kelly Dodd ever again. Kelly “made up” with Tamra Judge on last week’s episode, but how long will that really last? Vicki Gunvalson has been reaching out to a woman that Kelly allegedly attacked. OOF.
For some reason, Shannon Beador took it upon herself to tell Kelly what Vicki was doing. Gina Kirschenheiter wanted to do it first, but Fun Shannon beat her to the punch. Emily Simpson is also on the trip. She’s not really making an impact of any kind, but she’s there. Braunwyn Windham-Burke probably didn’t expect all this chaos when she planned the trip. Fun times are not allowed. Kelly and Vicki are about to go to war once again.
Vicki is injured. What a shock. Once again, the biggest drama queen of all time (besides Shannon) has been hurt. OKAY, VICKI.
Kelly, of course, doesn’t believe Vicki is as hurt as she claims. Emily makes a hilarious dig about Tres Amigas being senior citizens, and I’m dying. SO FUNNY.
Braunwyn, Emily, and Kelly take a tour of the Hemingway House, and it looks beautiful. Who knew there was so much history in Key West? Very cool.
Vicki “falls” trying to walk on her crutches, and her need for attention is annoying. Someone is trying a little too hard to earn back her orange. Grow up.

Gina and Kelly have the same bathing suit and Kelly’s oranges are loud and proud. Sorry Gina, but Kelly wins a who wore it best contest this time. There really was no competition.
Watching how scared Gina is of water shouldn’t entertain me as much as it does. If she is that scared, she should stop putting herself in positions like this. Going on a jet ski is probably not the place for someone with crippling water anxiety.
Honestly, watching Shannon do water sports is just as entertaining as watching Gina. Shannon doing athletics of any kind is never NOT going to be funny. Her facial reactions and body language are way too hilarious.
While in the water, Gina spots a shark, and now her life may be over. What a year. First, she was arrested, and now she’s going to get eaten by JAWS. What a way to go though! Everyone out of the water!
I know the guide says nobody has ever died from a hammerhead, but damn. If I saw a HAMMERHEAD SHARK in the water, I’d be fleeing for my life. Someone put my back on land.

Gina is crying, and Kelly hands her a starfish for good luck. LMAO. Alright. Hey, I know a shark is coming to eat you, but here is Patrick.
Braunwyn tells the Tres Amigas that Kelly admitted to having an anger problem. Here she goes again. Being the bone collector. She is SUCH a flip-flop.
The women are going out to a group dinner, so things are about to heat up. There’s almost no chance of this event going off without a Kelly and Vicki showdown. Someone’s going overboard on this booze cruise!
Braunwyn has the weirdest energy. She also looks panicked and frazzled. I’m not sure if this group is the best environment for her.

Vicki has personalized hats for everyone, and the Kelly hat says “Krazy AF”. Apparently, doing it with a “K” is not shady. However, being shady doesn’t make it not true. I think Kelly is very aware she’s crazy, and she owns it for the most part.
Emily opens up to Kelly about her children mimicking her fighting with Shane Simpson. Kids pick up on everything, so that’s not surprising. If their environment is toxic, they’ll act out.
Kelly issues a very heartfelt apology to Tamra, and they exchange “I love you”s. Unfortunately, Tamra can’t let that be it. She tries to initiate a peace treaty between Kelly and Vicki as well. LET IT GO.
How can Vicki honestly think she’s doing nothing to Kelly? She’s done so many low down dirty things to Kelly. Pretending not to be self-aware isn’t cute.
The ladies are back in Orange County after an intense Florida trip. Hopefully, being back home will knock some sense in them. The Tres Amigas cannot dominate this group forever. It’s a clique that needs to come to an end.

Tamra, Shannon, and Braunwyn meet up for dinner with their significant others. They discuss Kelly and Vicki’s never-ending feud and how they always go low.
When you lay it all out there, they really are very similar. That could be the reason why they end up clashing.
They’re inviting Kelly to Vicki’s engagement party. Oh, man. I don’t know how great of an idea that is. It’s the happiest day of Vicki’s life, and you’re inviting her biggest enemy. Pot stirrers!
Kelly and her boyfriend Brian Reagan go to a batting cage, and he’s horrible when it comes to athletics. Kelly actually can hit the ball really well! They talk about Vicki’s engagement party, but she has no interest in going to that. I feel that. Vicki’s been horrible to her.
Kelly shuts down Brian when he asks what the next step is for them. He wants her to move in, but she doesn’t want to move in without an engagement. Fair enough. Although, we all know the real next step…

Gina calls her mother and talks about the status of her marriage. She needs to figure out what she’s going to do next. None of this is healthy. She wants to make the marriage work, but COME ON.
Her mother says “it’s not just sex” and says it shouldn’t be the only priority. Thank you, momma! Preach! Gina is willing to stick this marriage out for all of the wrong reasons.
I feel like Tamra put her sons together in the room without telling them just to get a storyline. That’s not okay at all. She’s really forcing this situation.
However, the conversation turns to Tamra’s behavior. She’s been snapping at everyone lately. She’s projecting her financial issues onto the entire family.
Spencer Barney says that Tamra doesn’t really listen to him, and told him to get over a breakup. He claims they’re all wired by everyone. So many people in the family aren’t speaking to one another. What a mess.

Emily and Kelly are actually going to this anger management. I love that Emily is self-aware enough to realize she snaps too quickly. That’s such a good step.
Kelly had a better childhood than Emily, but the girl still has some issues. Although something went wrong in her life for her to get in the place she’s in now. Most people don’t react the way she does at the drop of the hat.
The therapist has them envision the people they find hardest to love. Naturally, Kelly’s top name was Vicki. She finds it hard not to punch Vicki in the face.
I mean, surely that’s a common feeling. There’s so much hurt between the two. They might not ever be able to FULLY make up.

Emily wants everything in her life to be perfect to combat the chaos of her childhood. Stuff that happens when people are kids really sticks with them. It can be really rough.
Kelly doesn’t want to hate Vicki. I actually believe that. I think she reacts really quickly to things. However, that doesn’t mean she wants a blood feud. She’d probably prefer peace because at the end of the day nobody wants to fight forever.
Unlike Vicki, I don’t think Kelly wants this to keep blowing up. Kelly’s going to the engagement party, so evidently, she is open to peace. Instead of fighting, this could be a new beginning for the two. I guess we will find out soon.
