A legal fight over ABC’s broadcast licenses has exposed how pressure from Donald Trump’s administration affected programming decisions. Disney attorney Beth Wilkinson told a federal judge that ABC changed what The View aired because executives feared FCC scrutiny and retaliation.

Disney’s attorney says the network limited political content amid concerns about FCC scrutiny and retaliation

As per Deadline, Wilkinson made the disclosure Tuesday during arguments in Disney’s First Amendment lawsuit against the Federal Communications Commission. She said “The View” dropped political candidate clips from its “Hot Topics” segment this election cycle because the network worried about the FCC’s “equal time rule,” which requires comparable airtime for Democratic and Republican candidates.

The FCC opened an investigation after “The View” hosted Texas Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico in February. In ABC’s view, the program qualifies for the “bona fide news interview program” exemption. Talarico is challenging Trump-backed Republican incumbent Ken Paxton (via Variety).

The concern reached beyond “The View.” Wilkinson said ABC News live-streamed Trump’s July speech after executives decided against airing it on television because they feared the president “would be angry” if the network did not broadcast it. Trump criticized ABC anyway.

Wilkinson summarized the situation with a blunt warning, saying, “We are watching everything we do.” She said opposing Trump can bring “anger in the administration and retaliation from the agency.” Losing ABC station licenses, she argued, would effectively be the “death penalty.”

In April, FCC Chair Brendan Carr ordered an unusual early review of licenses held by Disney’s eight company-owned ABC stations, including outlets in major markets. The FCC had not taken such action in more than five decades.

Disney has gone to court, arguing that the move amounts to retaliation for programming and coverage that Trump dislikes. The commission, however, says the review stems from a separate investigation into Disney’s diversity practices and the company’s response to document requests (via The Daily Beast).

Meanwhile, ABC’s late-night lineup remains part of the larger tug-of-war. Jimmy Kimmel Live! continues to feature Kimmel’s criticism of Trump, even after the president repeatedly demanded that ABC remove him. Network executives have also raised questions about Kimmel’s future, despite the show’s ratings climbing.

Donald Trump Flashed His Suit Tag at Nebraska Rally but the Label Is Raising Eyebrows

Donald Trump’s Nebraska appearance produced an unexpected detail when his suit jacket opened near the end of his rally. A visible tag prompted questions about the clothing choice, especially after the president used the event to promote an economic message centered on U.S. manufacturing.

Donald Trump appeared in a Jos. A. Bank suit as he promoted bringing manufacturing back to the US

The label identified the navy suit as Jos. A. Bank. Menswear writer Derek Guy noticed the tag in a photograph by Win McNamee and said the brand generally manufactures its suits overseas, including in China and Bangladesh.

That created an awkward contrast with Trump’s remarks in Grand Island, where he boasted about bringing manufacturing back to American soil. The wardrobe detail surfaced as he left the event after ending his speech and dancing to the Village People’s “Y.M.C.A.” (via The Daily Beast)

Jos. A. Bank does have an American-made connection through its Joseph Abboud label, but Trump’s visible tag named Jos. Jos. A. Bank is the subsidiary of its parent company Tailored Brands, which owns Men’s Wearhouse and K&G Fashion Superstores.

Guy questioned why the president selected what he described as a cheaper imported option instead of the U.S.-made alternative. “I wonder why Trump chose the cheap import over the US-made suit,” he wrote.

Trump’s suit choice also fits a longer pattern. During his first presidency, he frequently wore Brioni, the Italian luxury brand he favored while hosting The Apprentice, according to The New York Times. The Daily Beast also reported that Trump Store merchandise sold at Trump Tower has carried “Made in China” and “Made in Vietnam” labels.

Trump Mobile has faced another manufacturing contradiction. The service initially promoted a phone as “built in the United States,” but that wording later vanished. Afterwards, it was reported that the device closely replicated a phone introduced by a Taiwanese company two years earlier.

Donald Trump Says He’ll Speak With Putin ‘Very Soon’ About Russia Plague Case

President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that he has a call scheduled with Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss the pneumonic plague. This follows the death of a female staffer at a Russian anti-plague lab. The incident has sparked public health concerns worldwide.

Donald Trump and Putin are expected to discuss the possible pneumonic plague case

Donald Trump told reporters on the White House South Lawn that a call with Putin was “scheduled” and would happen “very soon.” He did not provide a specific date. A day earlier, the president said the United States stood ready to assist Russia, calling pneumonic plague “a rough disease.”

“I hate to see them having it,” he said. “Anybody that has that kind of a problem, we’re always willing to help.” The Russian Embassy in Washington has not commented on Trump’s remarks. For those unaware, a Russian health watchdog reported last week that Darya Shipilova, 28, died from a “pneumonia of undetermined” origin at the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Institute of Siberia and the Far East. Officials found no plague among her contacts, only two COVID cases and one rhinovirus.

The World Health Organization has requested more details from Russia. Russian officials continue investigating but say all contacts tested negative for pneumonic plague. Pneumonic plague is a severe lung infection and the most virulent form of plague.

Bubonic plague affects lymph nodes, while septicaemic plague affects blood. Pneumonic plague can develop from either type. Symptoms include shortness of breath, chest pain, and coughing blood. Global plague cases range between 1,000 and 3,000 annually, mostly bubonic, with occurrences in Africa, Russia, India, China, and the US (via BBC).

A State Department official said the US has been in touch with Russia about the incident since Friday. Secretary of State Marco Rubio urged Russia to share information but cautioned against speculation. “Maybe, you know, there’s nothing there. Maybe it’s bigger than we thought. We don’t know,” Rubio said in Iceland. “But I think it would be reckless at this moment, given the limited information we still have, to speculate about what this might or might not be.”

The CDC confirmed it monitors the “suspected case of pneumonic plague in the Irkutsk region of Russia,” adding there is no indication of a broader US threat.
