Survivor: Winners At War Episode 9 Recap: A 50/50 Chance

Somebody famous once said, “You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.” On tonight’s wild episode of Survivor: Winners At War, several players took some big shots, risking their games in the process, because really, why not? You win, or you lose, right? In the end, it really is that black-and-white. Sometimes, it just comes down to the flip of a coin.

As I do at the beginning of every recap, please heed the following: Remember that this recap assumes that you have already seen this week’s episode of Survivor: Winners at War. If you have not and don’t want to be spoiled, please come back later! It’s important to add that while we WILL hit on all of the important developments of the episode, this is not a linear “blow-by-blow” recap. It is more of a discussion and reaction of what we just witnessed together.

Thank you Adam! This season has been a wild ride in and outside of the game, and Adam was gold through-and-through. As recently as last week’s Recap, I called Adam’s game this season “reckless” and “all-over-the-place,” so it was only fitting that things went down the way they did tonight for Adam. I had started to believe that Adam might had started morphing into the perfect “goat” candidate (not “greatest of all-time,” but like, an actual goat), the guy who had burned so many bridges that maybe he’d be the ideal opponent to sit next to at the end. But for that to happen, Adam needed to get a few votes further into this game. The chaos and paranoia that his game brought this season was just too much to handle by these other all-stars, who are all looking to get control of things by eliminating as many of the wild-card candidates as possible.

Adam‘s paranoia came to a hilarious, uncomfortably awkward climax when he basically tried to play Jeff‘s Tribal Council podium as an Immunity Idol. It was a desperate move. A move that arose out of his astute attention to detail and awareness, two qualities that were virtues for Adam on his winning season, but here got the best of him. The move was at once memorable, an iconic moment that will be talked about and will most likely appear on lists of “Survivor moments” for the rest of eternity. But Adam’s attempt at finding a miracle Idol wasn’t idiotic, or on the level of other doltish moves this game has witnessed over the past 40 seasons. At that point, Adam’s name had already been written down by the majority, and he was going home. So why not go for it? You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take, right?

So no harm, ultimately. The bad part about it is that we learned at the very tail-end of the episode that Adam actually was playing a bit more aggressive and loose because of that Idol that he thought he had imagined was up there on that podium. Was Adam’s fate already sealed coming into Tribal, or did his actions and the actions of others during that crazy, whisper-filled Tribal Council actually cost Adam his game? We know now, looking back on this season, why they kept showing Adam investigating the voting booth and other areas of Tribal.

An Idol might not have been hiding in plain sight, but several major threats in the game still are. One of the most fascinating elements of this season of all-winners has been watching the dynamics form, and the powers shift, Tribal to Tribal, day to day, and even minute to minute. Remember when all the old-school legends were too big of threats to let play this game? Well, Tyson worked his way back into the game and suddenly is flying lower-than-low on the Survivor radar. And just ask Adam how deadly of an oversight this is…seemingly with no real power in the game, Tyson is the one that first pitched the game-plan to get rid of Adam, the plan that eventually stuck. Sometimes, being alone in the game, at certain key points in the game, is much more dangerous than having numbers, or several advantages at your disposal. Even the preview for next week didn’t show Tyson as a name that people were throwing around.

Speaking of names not being thrown around, how about the great Kim Spradlin-Wolfe? I know she had an Immunity Necklace around her neck tonight (as she tends to have), but Kim came into the game as arguably one of the biggest targets out there, old-school and new-school included. She’s not on anyone’s radar and looks poised to make a big move next week (judging by the preview). Plus, she can dominate challenges. But that’s what I mean, this season, everyone is a major threat, so it’s no surprise that nobody can make up their minds until the very last second!

Adam‘s ousting still leaves Nick and Michele in a precarious situation moving forward, and Nick more than Michele – perception-wise at least – is not going to be off the hot-seat. We enter next week with 10 left in the game, so there is still room for the others to go for the “easy votes” before they shore up their final pushes towards the end of the game. However, being that this is “Winners At War,” I don’t think these winners are going to be able to resist the “big move” and that’s only good news for Nick and Michele in the short-term. Long-term, I think this season is going to be very hard to win without a very strong strategic resumé…I mean, you have an all-winner jury looking to crown the “best of the best,” and you’re simply not going to get the win without having done something major. People on the bottom might be willing to make big moves, but they’re just given fewer and fewer opportunities to do so.

Michele‘s decision to trade four Fire Tokens for a “50/50 Coin” was also a debatable decision, but I say, again, why the hell not? Michele’s Fire Tokens are useless to her if she gets voted out, and she’s clearly on the outs. From the comfort of our couches, we may be screaming about how stupid it seems to give up four Fire Tokens for something that may not even give her anything at all, but when you’re on the bottom, even having a 50% chance of getting Immunity sounds like a game-changing opportunity.

Over at The Edge, just a day or two removed from the major let-down of not getting to get back into the game, we saw that the focus was on the group. Parvati and Danni found the advantage fair-and-square, and they successfully scored Michele‘s Four Fire Tokens. Using it to get some food for the whole camp is maybe just an act of camaraderie and bare survival, but I’m sure as we get closer to the end, we’ll see a more individual approach to living on The Edge from the ousted contestants.

Let’s not leave without commenting on Sarah‘s eyebrow-raising decision to give up her Chinese food reward to Nick, for his birthday, and claiming it was not done for any sort of strategy. This whole sequence didn’t seem right to me. First, Sarah is way too savvy a player to be acting naive as to how this might have looked to the other players. Second, EVERY action in the game of Survivor is strategic, and she knows that. Part of me thinks that this might have been an early bit of foreshadowing for Sarah’s story, a glimpse of just how comfortable she’s gotten in the game. Sure, her move might have been made with the purest intentions, but to not realize how it would be perceived was just out-of-character for Sarah, or it was a sign that she’s feeling like she’s in a position of power, and is oblivious to the fact that others would knock her down for what she did. With her name now publicly being thrown around and Sarah herself catching wind of it, I don’t think Sarah will repeat the mistake, but one mistake on this season might be all it takes to throw your game away.

Legacy Watch: Since the game of Survivor will forever be changed as this season rolls along, I’ve added a new segment where we’ll take a look at whose game legacy’s have taken a hit, and whose have risen, based on the actions of this week’s episode. We tend to forget that although this season is made up of all winners, normal Survivor biases still come into play. Adam Klein is the youngest winner in Survivor history, and at age 28, was the youngest player this season as well. His game this season was actually much like his winning season: He played with emotion but had a keen sense of awareness, and even though he fell on the wrong side of the numbers along the way, he kept re-positioning himself to get farther in the game. I thought that his bumpy relationship with Ben might have evolved into a working relationship much like it did with his in-game rival Jay during Millennials vs. Gen-X, but Ben is a different dude altogether than the more calm and cool Jay. I don’t think Adam’s legacy gets tarnished in any way based on his performance this current season. He was simply running with the big dogs and he got bit…but he went down scratching and clawing.

Episode Take-Away: It was another great episode, and I loved Tony‘s take on the season. With the old-school now out of the way, we no longer have the old vs. the new, now it’s the “lions” and the “hyenas.” The lions being the ones with the big targets, or big reputations coming into the game, and the hyenas being the other folk who lurk in the shadows and come in for the scraps once all is said and done. If the regular order of nature has its way, the lions will come out on top, but in the game of Survivor, it’s eat or be eaten. The lions got one of the hyenas tonight, but the battle is just beginning. Or as the cheesy new Survivor music claims, “They’re coming for you!”

Bethenny Frankel Says Real Housewives Of New York Premiere Was “Proverbial Middle Finger” Toward Her; Says Real Housewives Is Not “Inspiring Content Right Now”

We all knew that Bethenny Frankel quit Real Housewives of New York, but no one expected it to be addressed on the show. We all know how much these women (Ramona Singer and Luann de Lesseps) hate all of the attention that Bethenny gets. Not gonna lie, I was pretty shook when the season 10 premiere episode opened with a (staged) montage of the women reacting to the news.

Dorinda Medley and Sonja Morgan seemed genuinely upset, but Ramona and Lu couldn’t be more thrilled.

Now, Bethenny is shading the shit out of them and the show that made her a household name. According to Page Six, Bethenny told Extra, “The beginning of the show was the proverbial middle finger to me.”

She remarked, “The women have definitely had some unpleasant things to say about me … I wish them well.” Again, at least Sonja care. She even equated Bethenny’s departure to the loss she felt when her daughter left the house to attend college.

Bethenny didn’t mention any names, but she did come for the show as a whole. Bethenny began, “The ratings overall in television have never been higher and perhaps the ratings on ‘Real Housewives’ aren’t doing well because it’s sort of not maybe the content that is inspiring people to do what they need to do right now.” Oh. Damn. She went there.

She continued, “Or maybe they want to watch the news or something uplifting or some way to pay it forward.” Bethenny may have left the show, but she didn’t lose her ability to throw some shade. The woman still has it and she’s saving the world at the same time.

In that same interview, Bethenny mentioned, “We will have distributed over $16 million worth of aid this week and that will grow exponentially.” That is absolutely amazing.

This interview wasn’t the only recent dig Bethenny made against the show. She told UPI, “It’s an interesting time for me to have left my former show because I don’t think that represents who I am right now or anymore. I don’t think it represents my future. It’s not a reflection of all the values that are important to me.”

So much for my hopes that Bethenny would make a Bravo come back down the road. That ship has sailed.

Katie Maloney Says She Didn’t Exclude Kristen Doute From Wine Night As A “Personal Dig” Against Her; Kristen Says It Was “Childish & Cruel”

Yes, we all know that Kristen Doute isn’t the most rational person on Vanderpump Rules. Then again, who really is? Still, it’s so sad to see her excluded from cast events. Katie Maloney invited every woman with a pulse that lives in West Hollywood to girls’ wine night. Except for Kristen.

The extra salt in this wound? The night was all about drinking wine while Kristen, Katie, and Stassi Schroeder were at odds over their wine line. Katie invited Charli Burnett, who I think is hilarious, but she and Katie have zero relationship. Katie even invited Raquel Leviss, whose boyfriend she had been feuding with for years.

Kristen and Katie reflected on the snub (separately) during a recent appearance on the Vanderpump Rules after show. Kristen said what many viewers thought: “It’s so purposely mean and cruel and f*cking stupid and childish.”

Kristen rambled, “It’s one thing to have wine night with some of your friends and even with some of the new girls at SUR. But, to literally invite people you literally don’t even like that you purposely hate and leave me out when I live five blocks from you, I just think it’s like really childish. That’s where I stand.” No one could blame her for feeling this way.

However, Katie maintains her innocence, of course. Katie claimed, “It wasn’t supposed to be any dig at Kristen. It was just timing. Sorry.” Yeah, I’m sure Katie is so sorry.

Katie continued, “I can’t put my life on hold because I’m not friends with Kristen. I can’t be like ‘I can’t do any girl activities because I’m not hanging out with Kristen Doute and I don’t want her to take everything I do as a personal dig.’ I need to be able to still conduct my life and do things accordingly.” Such a martyr.

Carole Baskin Was Not Contacted To Be In Additional Tiger King Episode

There is no doubt that Joe Exotic is the breakout star from the Netflix series Tiger King. Then again, that’s not saying a lot among a cast with so many questionable characters.

Comparatively, there doesn’t seem to be a ton of Carole Baskin super fans out there. This is primarily because of the cloud of suspicion around the disppearance of her late husband Don Lewis. Many people believe that Carole fed him to the tigers or she put his body in a meat grinder. I mean, she did explain in the documentary how this would be plausible if the a human was dipped in sardine oil. Recently, her co-star Jeff Lowe said that Carole reported that meat grinder was stolen right after Don’s disappearance. While no one has been convincted of a crime, a lot of people are talking about Carole and her possible involvement in this.

Will Carole clap back at the haters during the bonus episode of Tiger King that’s on its way? Apparently, Carole and her current husband Howard Baskin will not be a part of it. At all. Carole’s representative told Entertainment Weekly, “We have not been approached about a new episode and would not participate if asked.”

Could that possibly mean that the Baskins just haven’t been approached yet and that there’s still a chance. How are we going to watch this show without hearing the phrase “hello cool cats and kittens”? Wasn’t this the main storyline? That seems like a major thing to exclude.

Since Joe is in prison, it’s unclear how he would participate. Presumably, he would come through via speakerphone. However, Joe’s husband Dillon Passage confirmed that he wasn’t asked to appear in another episode either. Entertainment Weekly reported on Dillon’s interview for Andy Cohen’s Sirius XM radio show. He said that he was aware of the episode, but no one approached him to appear.

Dillon told Andy, “It’s going to be like a live-based episode, I believe. Kind of like a reunion. But no, Netflix did not contact me to be a part of that.” Why not? Yes, Dillon wasn’t a principle character in the original episodes. However, he is married to Joe and talks to him multiple times a day. Wouldn’t he have some useful insight to provide?

Dillon elaborated, “I’m not sure completely on the details.” Weirdly, Dillon has been in touch with production though. They just didn’t invite him to partake, which, again makes zero sense. Dillon told Andy, “I only spoke with one of the producers a little while about it because I was asking her. I saw an article saying there was gonna be another episode dropped and I was kind of curious.”

Apollo Nida Says Kandi Burruss & Todd Tucker Snitched On Him For A Storyline On Real Housewives Of Atlanta

The Real Housewives of Atlanta drama between Phaedra Parks and her now-ex Apollo Nida was downright riveting. I will never forget their heated confrontation in the garage right before Apollo went to prison. The tension was real!

I’ll also never forget how the other RHOA cast members got involved in Apollo’s messiness. Kandi Burruss and Todd Tucker confessed that they were keeping Apollo’s motorcycle in storage at their ATL mansion. Who could forget when Phaedra hit peak level petty and called the feds to their house? Legendary television.

It seemed like Kandi and Todd were such good friends to Apollo by taking care of his belongings. Hell, Kandi basically gave up her friendship with Phaedra so Todd could continue to be friends with Apollo. However, it wasn’t that nice of a gesture. Or at least that is how Apollo feels about it.

Instead, Apollo thinks that Kandi and Todd used this favor to have a storyline on Real Housewives of Atlanta. Is this a shock to anyone? Minus Mama Joyce continually crossing the line with her insults aimed at Todd and promoting their businesses, their storylines are a little thin.

In a recent Instagram Live session with Cynthia Bailey’s ex-husband Peter Thomas. Hot New Hip Hop reported that Apollo declared, “They sold me out, come on. They wasn’t even supposed to talk about that stuff.” The Tuckers weren’t the only people storing Apollo’s belongings. The Feds went to Peter’s house too. Yes, that was a Phaedra-induced visit as well. Bow down to the queen of petty.

Apollo said, “If I came to you and said, ‘Hey put my stuff here, it’s hush-hush.’ You ain’t supposed to say nothing. You not supposed to go on national TV saying, ‘Hey, we holding this for Apollo’ just for a storyline! You sold me out!”

Are Apollo and Todd currently on bad terms though? Based on those remarks, it seems like Apollo is pretty bitter. However, Apollo and Todd did hit the strip club together a couple months ago… while Kandi was at home taking care of their newborn baby.

Stassi Schroeder Says Lala Kent Is “The Erika Jayne Of Vanderpump Rules”; Lala Kent Calls Raquel Leviss A “Peasant”

What is going on with Lala Kent on the current season of Vanderpump Rules? What happened to the underdog we all rooted for? Now, she is popping off left and right… against sweetheart Raquel Leviss, no less, completely unprovoked.

Hopefully, Lala has gained some perspective and learned some lessons watching the episodes back. However, it sure doesn’t seem like she has.

During an episode of the Vanderpump Rules After Show, Lala talked a big game about the fight she picked with Raquel (for no reason) during a girls wine night.

Lala said, “I don’t want to have to f*cking feast on you right now, but you’re making me do that again. It happens all th f*cking time. You walk into the lion’s den during feeding time and expect not to get feasted on.”

This girl did not start a fight. The only thing Raquel did was show up to the event that she was invited to with a bottle of wine to thank Katie Maloney for hosting. She was polite just like she normally is. And then, Lala started screaming at her to stay in her “lane” and even chirped at Stassi Schroeder when she dared to speak during her seemingly rehearsed monlogue.

Lala concluded, “Come on. Let’s remember who the queens are and who the peasants be.” Do queens attack people for no reason? Do queens try to out people on TV? I must have missed the memo.

During that after show segment, Katie and Stassi sat there silently, probably in shock that they’ve aligned with someone who says shit like this and actually believes it. Then, it hit Stassi. She had an epiphany.

Pointing at Lala, Stassi declared, “Erika Jayne. I’m telling you she’s the Erika Jayne of our show.”

I can see it. They both wear outrageous fashions. They’re both dating older men who fund their lifestyles. They’ve both used the Bravo platform to drop some music.

They both even have stage names. We all know about the Erika Jayne/Erika Girardi of it all. But, Lala Kent is actually Lauryn Burningham from Utah.

And, there’s another especially relevant behavior that they both have in common. They’ve both blown up on their co-stars completely unprovoked, i.e. when Erika told Eileen Davidson that she has no clue what she “deals with every night” during the cast trip to Hong Kong during season 7.

One difference that comes to mind is that Erika has two planes at her disposal. Meanwhile, Lala gives out “killer BJ’s” so her man can charter a rental in exchange for friendships with castmates who hated her.

Stassi Schroeder Would Give Up Part Of Her Salary If Alex McCord Returned To Real Housewives Of New York; Wants Mario & Ramona Singer Back Together

Just like the rest of us, Bravolebrities can be Bravo fans as well. Vanderpump Rules couple Stassi Schroeder and Beau Clark are Real Housewives of New York superfans. They love watching RHONY together, which sounds like the ideal relationship to me.

Stassi is so invested in RHONY that she’s willing to put her own Bravo paycheck on the line if she can make some casting changes.

During a Watch What Happens Live appearance, Beau told Andy Cohen, “This is my second time binging the whole series.”

Stassi spoke for most of us when she said, “It’s a national treasure. There’s nothing that makes me happier and there’s nothing that would keep me on the couch more than binge-watching RHONY. I just am obsessed.” That is just so relatable, Stassi.

So, of course, Andy asked the couple some RHONY-centered questions. He wanted to know, “Who do you miss more: Alex McCord or Kelly Bensimon?”

Stassi answered, “Alex McCord is one of my favorites. I would take a pay cut from Bravo to bring her back. When we’re working on our next contract, I’ll take a pay cut. Bring back Alex and Simon [van Kempen].” Beau chimed in, ‘Simon needs to come back too.” We need an encore performance of his song “I’m Real,” while wearing leather pants, of course.

For the record, Alex and Simon don’t even live in New York City anymore. They currently reside in Australia. But, maybe the Vanderpump Rules stars can take a cast trip to Australia next season. Picture this: Beau and Stassi on a double date with Alex and Simon. The SUR crew rotates between going to Las Vegas, Mexico, and Miami every season. Let’s switch things up for once and make this happen.

When asked, she named Sonja Morgan as the cast member who has “changed the most,” but emphasized that it was in a “good way.”

Stassi also named Ramona Singer’s ex-husband (and current quarantine buddy) Mario Singer as her favorite RHONY guy. She also shared, “I really want them to get back together.” SAME HERE.

Jennifer Aydin Has Tested Positive For Coronavirus

Real Housewives of New Jersey cast member Jennifer Aydin just revealed that she has tested positive for coronavirus. She is not the first Bravolebrity to face this struggle. Andy Cohen tested positive, but has recovered and is reunited with his son Ben. Jim Edmonds tested positive for both coronavirus and pneumonia.

She got access to a test through her husband Bill Aydin, who is a plastic surgeon. She opened up about her experience after her social media followers kept asking her why she wasn’t posting as much as she normally did.

On Instagram, Jennifer wrote, “Why I’ve been MIA: I’ve been sick for the past 10 days and Monday is when my test came back positive. But today is the first day that I’m finally starting to feel better.”

In a video that she posted Jennifer said, “I’ve been staying away from the kids. I’ve been quarantined in my room. Bill’s really stepped up the plate. I mean, he’s staying far, far away from me, but he’s helping out with the kids, which I’m grateful for.” She also shared, “Keeping my kids away has been the hardest and I’m grateful that I have no breathing issues.”

The Housewife shared, “My days haven’t been so bad, aside from a lot of fatigue and sleeping. At night is when it’s the worst for me because of the mix of sweating and chills. I’m taking my vitamins and drinking hot liquids. We’ll all get through this. #staypositive #stayinside.”

In her video, Jennifer elaborated on the situation. She told her followers, “My symptoms started last week on Monday, where I felt extreme fatigue, no fever. I was asking Bill to bring home a test for me, but he was reluctant because I didn’t have a fever or a heavy cough.” A couple days later, Bill came through and conducted the test himself.

Jennifer also revealed that she has lost her sense of taste and her sense of smell. She concluded her video by encouraging everyone to stay at home.
