A parachute malfunction has led to a terrible tragedy. On Saturday, a Frenchman well known in the skydiving world lost his life. He was doing a free-fall jump in the southeastern region of France this weekend when the incident occurred.
The adrenaline junky jumped from a helicopter in a wingsuit for the daring freefall in the Mont Blanc massif in the French Alps. After several seconds of freefall the skydiver’s parachute reportedly didn’t open, leading to his demise. No word on exactly why it wasn’t working. He was a former world champion in skydiving.
Pierre Wolnik is dead age 37
The French Parachutisme Federation (FPF) is mourning the loss of one of its own. In addition to competing in skydiving competitions, Pierre Wolnik serves as a videographer for the FPF. French media outlet Le Figaro confirmed Pierre’s death.
Following the tragedy, the FPF released a statement about Pierre. When translated into English it states that he’ll be “remembered as a teammate whose presence will forever be etched in the memories of those around him.” They go on to say that the entire parachuting community mourns his loss.
Last November, Pierre expressed his love for the extreme sport. Sharing one of his freefalls, his caption read “Flying high, feeling free.” His post concluded with “Because up there, everything makes sense.” The President of the FPF, Yves-Maria Guillaud, released a separate statement about him. “May the memory of this exceptional parachutist fill our hearts,” he wrote on Facebook.
Skydiving is something Pierre was all too familiar with, but we saw an actress do it over the summer. A video of Sydney Sweeney skydiving came out in August. Some called the moment her coolest video yet.
Pierre is a two-time world champion in the sport. Earlier this year, he was a member of the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI) and a leader in wingsuit skydiving. His body was discovered in the village of Les Bossons in the Chamonix valley in France. Pierre was 37.
