The world has lost another beloved star. Dawson’s Creek heartthrob James Van Der Beek has died at the age of 48. A rep for the Travis County (Texas) Medical Examiner’s Office said it was reported to them at 6:44 AM this morning.
Though no cause of death was given, the actor died following a hard-fought battle with cancer.
James Van Der Beek was diagnosed with stage 3 colorectal cancer in 2024
James’ wife Kimberley Van Der Beek shared the sad news of her husband’s death shortly after TMZ broke the story. She posted a tribute to her husband on Instagram. She wrote, “Our beloved James David Van Der Beek passed peacefully this morning. He met his final days with courage, faith, and grace. There is much to share regarding his wishes, love for humanity and the sacredness of time. Those days will come. For now we ask for peaceful privacy as we grieve our loving husband, father, son, brother, and friend.”
Though he was diagnosed with stage 3 colorectal cancer in August 2024, James still felt optimistic about his future. In a 2025 interview with Good Morning America, he became emotional when talking about how Kimberly had cared for him since his diagnosis.
Despite his plans to join his fellow Dawson’s Creek castmates for a reunion in September 2025, he had to cancel the appearance due to his health.
After exploding onto the pop culture stage as Dawson Leery on Dawson’s Creek, James continued his acting career with Scary Movie, Varsity Blues and Pose. In 2019, he competed on Dancing with the Stars Season 28, partnering with Emma Slater. The couple became very close friends, while finishing in fifth place.
In addition to his acting career, James was a doting father. He leaves behind his and Kimberly’s six children: Olivia, 15; Joshua, 13; Annabel Leah, 12; Emelia, 9; Gwendolyn, 7; and Jeremiah, 4.
