Prince William and Prince Harry have been on shaky terms for a long time now, and nothing lately suggests that’s changing anytime soon.
The fallout really took off after Harry and Meghan Markle stepped away from royal duties in 2020. Since then, the monarchy itself has also been in a period of transition.
According to someone who once worked closely with Princess Diana, William’s future as king may be the biggest reason he’s keeping his brother at a distance.
Prince William aims to protect the future of the monarchy
Princess Diana’s former butler, Paul Burrell, believes the growing gap between the brothers is more deliberate than many people think. “I think William has distanced himself from Harry a lot more than people realize,” he told Fox News.
He said William’s focus has shifted as he prepares for the throne. “Because William’s path is very different from Harry’s. As he gets nearer and nearer to the throne, which will be in a few years, he has to remain isolated. He has to be in a world that is very tight and protected,” he explained. He also noted that William “can’t let things leak out” and “doesn’t want to live in a world with a leaky sieve.”
To Paul, that level of control just comes with the role. “[William] doesn’t want to live in a world that can’t be controlled because, to be a monarch, you have to control the environment. You have to look after the crown,” he said.
He did give Harry some credit, saying stepping away from royal life had to be tough. “I do applaud Harry’s move,” the former butler said. Still, he does not expect a reconciliation anytime soon. “But I don’t think there’s any room for reconciliation. I don’t think that is [happening] anytime soon, if ever.”
Paul believes the public fallout created lasting damage. “Because you see, too many words have been said, and too much dirty laundry has been laundered in public, really, for the royal family. That’s unforgivable,” he added. “Harry knew the rules.”
