Executives at NBC feel stuck between a rock and a hard place. The disappearance of Nancy Guthrie has shaken them and everyone at the network to their core. Nancy is the mother of Savannah, who hosts Today on NBC.
There has been speculation that they might do a Dateline episode about the mystery, but the higher-ups are said to be “uncomfortable” about doing that according to an insider. Nancy has been missing officially since February 1. Blood was discovered at her home, which belonged to the 84-year-old, while police believe she was taken. The FBI is offering a $50,000 reward for anyone with information on her whereabouts.

As much as a Dateline special on Nancy could be a huge ratings hit, NBC bosses don’t seem ready to green-light it. On Rob Shuter’s Substack Naughty but Nice, an insider says that executives at the network are deeply conflicted. “People are begging the company to do something,” the insider adds.
Fear, however, seems to be an underlying factor on many fronts. The executives consider Savannah family and don’t want to appear like they’re profiting off her grief. In addition, some of Savannah’s colleagues reportedly are pushing the network to pay the $6 million ransom. Bosses fear that doing so would set a dangerous precedent that could lead to this happening again.
A ransom note sent this week promised to return Nancy within 12 hours after receiving the money. Some believe the kidnapper or kidnappers may live in Tucson, just as Nancy does. The thought behind that is that many of the ransom notes have appeared on local news stations in that area. Police arrested a man earlier this week in connection with Nancy’s disappearance. The man known as Carlos has since been released, claiming he didn’t know who Nancy or Savannah were.
Savannah has been absent from hosting at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy and from anchoring during this ordeal.
