The undying support of parents can take some to places few thought possible. Sam Darnold experienced a dream few get to have on Sunday, quarterbacking the Seattle Seahawks to a Super Bowl title. The former first-round draft pick had been labelled as a bust after some lean years with the New York Jets.
He’s rejuvenated his NFL career over the past two seasons and says it’s thanks to his mom and dad. After the Seahawks 29-13 win over the New England Patriots, Sam said that he and his parents had some emotional moments together. He says they believed in him throughout his career, and that’s how he was able to believe in himself.
Sam Darnold had a lot of praise for his Seahawks teammates
Along with his parents, Sam had a lot of emotions after winning the Super Bowl. He was especially thankful for his teammates. “Some people call me crazy for believing in myself so much,” he said at the post-game press conference. He says his parents and teammates in Seattle were a huge inspiration for him. “To do it with this team, I wouldn’t want it any other way,” Sam declared.
When Sunday’s game had ended, the Seahawks quarterback shared a warm embrace with his head coach, Mike Macdonald. In the moment, he thanked Mike for believing in him. Sam’s NFL journey has been a roller coaster of highs and lows.
The former third overall pick has won 14 games as a starter in each of the past two seasons, one of which was with the Minnesota Vikings. Only NFL legend Tom Brady has done that as well. Sam had just one winning season as a starting quarterback before 2024. Three-time Super Bowl champion Travis Kelce praised a Seahawks tight end following Sunday’s game. AJ Barner caught a touchdown pass from Sam in that encounter.
Sam became the first quarterback to lift the Lombardi Trophy from the 2018 draft class. He’s also the first USC Trojans quarterback to start and win a Super Bowl.
