Between the movie’s box office numbers and the scandal surrounding its director, Melania: Twenty Days to History has made headlines in more ways than one. And, now, there’s another … accusations of stolen music.
Paul Thomas Anderson’s film score was reportedly used in the Melania doc without his approval
The makers of the Melania documentary – those being director and producer Brett Ratner, along with Amazon and MGM – have been accused of using music in the movie without the right permissions. Director Paul Thomas Anderson and Radiohead lead guitarist Jonny Greenwood are demanding answers about a piece of music pulled from their 2017 film, Phantom Thread.
“It has come to our attention that a piece of music from Phantom Thread has been used in the Melania documentary,” the pair said in a joint statement. The statement was released on February 9, per The Daily Beast.
It continued to say that the film’s creators had “failed to consult” on the third-party use of the music score. “[This] is a breach of [Johnny’s] composer agreement,” the statement added.
As a result, Johnny and Paul have requested that the piece of music be removed from the documentary. So, what is the music in question? The excerpt is from the song Barbara Rose, which made up Phantom Thread‘s Oscar-nominated score.
The film, a psychological period drama, starred Daniel Day-Lewis. Phantom Thread told the story of a celebrated dress designer who took a young waitress as his lover and muse. It was the fourth of seven collaborations between Johnny and Paul.
Now, the Radiohead guitarist is seeking another Academy Award. This time for his work on Leonardo DiCaprio’s One Battle After Another.
