A CNN data analyst has warned that Donald Trump is facing a steep drop in public support. According to him, the president’s approval rating now compares unfavorably to Richard Nixon’s during one of the most turbulent periods in U.S. political history.

CNN’s chief data analyst, Harry Enten, described Donald Trump’s approval rating as plunging into “Death Valley,” meaning a sustained downward trend with little indication of recovery. According to him, Trump’s net approval rating has now hit a term-two low of -18 points.
“He’s now at a term 2 low: -18 pts,” Enten wrote on X, adding that independent voters are a major factor behind the drop. Trump’s approval among independents stands at -45 points, which Enten said is “the worst for any prez at this point in term 2. Worse than Nixon (-36 pts) at the height of Watergate!”
Enten explained that the decline is not tied to a single issue but rather a “slew of events” that have steadily weakened Trump’s standing. While he pointed to the ongoing Iran war as a contributing factor, he emphasized that multiple developments have pushed the numbers lower over time.
Providing a timeline, CNN analyst said, “He was at plus six points [in January], then minus three points a year ago [in April], minus seven points nine months ago, minus ten points in October 2025. January 2026, -13 points. And now all the way down to -18 points. A term two low.” He added that even if the Iran war ended quickly, any improvement in Trump’s approval rating would likely be limited.
The analyst further compared how Trump’s current approval rating numbers compare with those of past presidents. He noted that Nixon’s approval rating stood at -36 during the height of the Watergate scandal, while George W. Bush had a -37 rating amid the Iraq War. Trump’s -45 among independents falls below both benchmarks.
Summarizing the president’s standing, Enten offered a two-word assessment: “Death Valley.”
