Ifunanya Nwangene, a rising star on The Voice Nigeria in 2021, has sadly passed away. She suffered a snake bite while resting in her apartment. And now, her loved ones are paying tribute to the incredible life she lived, while mourning the future that Ifunanya tragically lost.
Ifunanya Nwangene has died at 26
Ifunanya’s version of Rihanna’s hit song, “Take a Bow,” was so impressive that she earned herself two chair turns in Season 3. Then, following her stint on The Voice Nigeria, Ifunanya secured her next role as a soprano singer with the Amemuso Choir based in Abuja, Nigeria. Mournfully, this choir’s Music Director, Sam C. Ezugwu, confirmed her “sudden” death in a statement on Facebook.
As their official statement details, “A neighbor attempted to assist [Ifunanya], but her car failed to start despite several attempts. Ifunanya then ran approximately 500 metres to the estate gate, took a motorcycle, and went to Divine Health Hospital, the closest hospital to her residence in Lugbe, Abuja.” But “Unfortunately, the hospital did not have antivenom and referred her to FMC.”
When the director arrived at the hospital with Paschal, Ifunanya’s closest friend, the doctors were already attending to her. She was struggling to breathe, had been placed on oxygen, and was unable to speak.”
They continued, “One of the doctors confirmed that Ifunanya arrived at the emergency ward by herself and had explained what happened. She reportedly told them that she saw a grey snake that bit her.” But unfortunately, “the hospital had exhausted its supply” of Neostigmine, a much-needed medication to combat the venom in her bite. Friends found this drug at the nearby Skylark Pharmacy, but before it could land in Ifunanya’s doctor’s hands, she tragically succumbed to her injuries.
In the aftermath, a medium-sized cobra was inside Ifunanya’s room. So was another smaller snake near her doormat, plus a third snake in a nearby compound. But it was the cobra that provided this “fatal bite.”
