Music icon Cher delivered one of the night’s most talked-about moments at the 2026 Grammy Awards after mistakenly naming the wrong artist while presenting Record of the Year in Los Angeles. The “Believe” hitmaker took the stage to announce the prestigious category but briefly veered off course, appearing ready to exit before revealing the winner. Host Trevor Noah quickly stepped in, stopping Cher and reminding her to present the award before leaving the stage.

Cher, one of this year’s Lifetime Achievement Award recipients, took the stage to loud applause and began thanking the audience before host Trevor Noah interrupted to present her trophy, creating an awkward exchange as he walked off holding the award. “Can we get you to announce the nominees?” Noah asked Cher as she walked back to the microphone. Cher joked in response, saying, “You can see I wanted to get off the stage.”

Cher returned to the microphone and admitted she expected the winner’s name to appear on the teleprompter, saying, “And the Grammy goes to Oh! They told me it was going to be on the prompter.” After opening the envelope, she enthusiastically announced Luther Vandross as the winner, prompting instant confusion inside the arena. Moments later, she corrected herself, clarifying that the award actually belonged to Kendrick Lamar and SZA for their song “Luther.” Vandross, an eight-time Grammy winner with 33 career nominations, died in 2005 at age 54.

“This is what music is about. Luther Vandross,” Lamar said, turning to Cher and his fellow collaborators for a laugh on stage. A moment later, Noah joked about the mistake, saying, “I love live television.”

Cher has long ties to the Grammys, having earned a Recording Academy award for her 1998 megahit “Believe,” and she has sustained a music career spanning more than six decades since launching in the 1960s.
