The Mirror reported Hugo Vickers’ recollection of Queen Elizabeth’s private reaction to Prince Harry stepping back from royal duties with his wife, Meghan Markle. Vickers, who wrote “Queen Elizabeth II: A Personal History,” made the comment while speaking on the Palace Confidential podcast.
He said, “Well, I do remember what the queen said at one point was, you know, one I’m not sure she’s use these exact words, but basically, you know, sort of, ‘One minute he’s captain general of the Royal Marines and the next minute he’s just a childminder’.”
Additionally, Vickers shared his own feelings about the fallout. He said, “One thing I will never forgive the Sussexes for is the stress they caused the Queen.” He added that he believes the Queen felt Harry “could have done more.” In his view, Harry “deserted the ship,” noting that “He was doing a good job before he left.”
The Mirror’s report referenced Markle’s past comments about the pressures of royal life.
