Donald Trump has slammed former President Joe Biden for allegedly neglecting the maintenance of the Lincoln Memorial reflecting pool on the National Mall. The businessman-turned-politician recently took to social media to criticize his predecessor and his administration for failing to keep the Washington, DC, monument clean and announced that he would take it upon himself to complete the job.

On March 31, the POTUS confirmed his plans to restore the Lincoln Memorial reflecting pool to its former glory via a social media post. He also revealed that he will be collaborating with Interior Secretary Doug Burgum to oversee the project that Joe Biden’s administration seemingly failed to fulfill.
“Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum and I are working on fixing the absolutely filthy reflecting pool between the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument,” Donald Trump wrote in his Truth Social post. “This work was supposed to be done by the Biden Administration, but Sleepy Joe doesn’t know what “CLEAN” or proper maintenance is — The President and Secretary do!”
Shortly after Trump’s online briefing, Doug Burgum also took to his X (formerly Twitter) to corroborate the President’s comments. “Unlike the Biden administration, @POTUS knows how to get things done! @Interior is working to Make D.C. Safe and Beautiful! Proud to work with you on this important task, Mr. President,” the Interior secretary posted, along with pictures of himself, standing beside the Lincoln Memorial reflecting pool.
Situated right in front of the Lincoln Memorial, the reflecting pool attracts a lot of pollutants over the course of a year, collecting bird feces, bacteria, pollen, and other contaminants due to the high volume of foot traffic, as per WUSA9. As such, the pool traditionally requires deep cleaning and refilling on an annual basis.
In February 2025, the National Park Service also posted a video on Instagram, showcasing a ‘Super-Scrubber’ cleaning the drained-out reflecting pool. “Our facilities team cleaning up a year’s worth of trash, algae, and goose poop in the Reflecting Pool,” they wrote.
