Reportedly, Queen Elizabeth II had her doubts about Meghan Markle long before her 2018 wedding to her grandson Prince Harry.
According to a new book coming out April 14, the late queen was skeptical of the American actress early on. She suspected her of being calculated and highly image-conscious.
The book is called The Queen and Her Presidents: The Hidden Hand That Shaped History, by Susan Page.
The late monarch was cautious “from the start”
“Her Majesty had become wary of Meghan as an opportunist,” Susan wrote. “[She] was ‘on to her from the start’ … [An opportunist] with public relations skills that left the palace’s outdated press operation in the dust.”
Meanwhile, another royal expert, Hugo Vickers, weighed in with his own thoughts on the Duchess of Sussex. In his book, Queen Elizabeth II: The Remarkable Life of Our Nation’s Most Beloved Monarch, he claimed the Queen was more cautious with her grandson after 2020. When Harry and Meghan stepped down as senior royals, she became more guarded in her conversations with him.
Per Hugo’s book, “the dynamics between the late Queen and Harry changed significantly,” especially after the Oprah Winfrey interview. Harry and Meghan’s criticism of the royal family’s lack of support was not received well in royal circles.
On March 26, Tom Bower’s book Betrayal: Power, Deceit and the Fight for the Future of the Royal Family debuted. The book alleged that a courtier “reported to the Queen that Megan thinks that once she marries into the royal family, she’s going to be God.”
“Clearly, she thought … she, rather than Kate [Middleton], should be the next queen after [King] Charles … She hated the idea that she and Harry were relegated so far down the order. She got everything she wanted, and then knew what she wanted and couldn’t get, and that was a lot. That’s why, of course, she never intended to stay.”
Additionally, Tom’s book includes claims involving Queen Camilla. Allegedly, Camilla once told a friend, “Meghan’s brainwashed Harry.”
