Hollywood, and the world at large, has rallied behind the family of James Van Der Beek, following his death at the age of 48.
The GoFundMe page started by his wife, Kimberly Van Der Beek, has exceeded all expectations. As of February 13, two days after the Dawson’s Creek actor passed away, the fundraiser has exceeded $2 million in funds. The donors include stars such as Steven Spielberg and Zoe Saldaña, who gave $50,000 and a $2,500 continuous monthly donation, respectively.
The James Van Der Beek GoFundMe has surpassed $2 million

In an update shared with the public on February 12, James’ widow posted: “Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for showing up for James and his beautiful family. Your kindness has meant more than we can put into words.”
“In the middle of deep grief, your support has been a light,” she continued. It reminds us that love is real, that community is strong, and that James’s spirit continues to bring people together.”
The mother of the actor’s six children did add, however, that the family will not be appearing in public any time soon. “Right now, the family is taking time to mourn and be with one another,” she added. “We kindly ask members of the media and the public to give them space and privacy as they walk through this painful season. Your respect and understanding will give them the room they need to heal.”
“Please continue to keep James’s wife and loved ones in your thoughts and prayers,” she concluded. “Thank you for honoring his life with compassion, generosity, and love.”
James died following a two-year battle with stage 3 colorectal cancer. Before his death, the actor had to fundraise to pay for his extensive medical bills. He auctioned off props and costumes from his work on Dawson’s Creek and Varsity Blues.
