Donald Trump has said that he expects to meet with King Charles “very soon,” just hours following the arrest of Charles’ brother, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor.
The former Prince Andrew was arrested on February 19, his 66th birthday, on suspicion of misconduct in public office. He was taken into a local police station for questioning for 11 hours, with full details not yet publicly available. Following his arrest, President Trump was asked by reporters about the news.
Speculation surrounds an upcoming state visit from King Charles to the US
“I think it’s a shame. I think it’s very sad,” Trump told reporters. He added, “I think it’s so bad for the royal family. It’s very, very sad. To me, it’s a very sad thing.”
The President was then asked about Andrew’s brother, the King. “It’s a very sad thing to see it and to see what’s going on with his brother,” Trump said. Then, it was his next statement that was news to reporters. He went on to say, Charles, “who’s obviously coming to our country very soon.”
“He’s a fantastic man, the King.”
Recently, it was speculated that the monarch was expected to make a major U.S. visit this year. 2026 marks the U.S.’s 250th anniversary of the country’s independence from Great Britain. The visit would symbolize a strong bond between the two nations, often referred to as the “Special Relationship.”
However, the palace has not yet formally confirmed a 2026 visit. Andrew’s arrest, as well as any subsequent news regarding a potential court date or sentencing, could affect this scheduling. King Charles has never made a formal U.S. visit as Head of State. The last time a reigning UK monarch visited the United States was in May 2007. Charles’ mother, Queen Elizabeth II, made a state visit to meet President George W. Bush.
