Olympic figure skater Amber Glenn was protective of Japanese skater Kaori Sakamoto during the Winter Olympics in Milan. She shooed away camera crews from the emotional silver medal winner after her program on Thursday, February 19.

Amber didn’t let her own disappointment in not medaling keep her from the act of kindness toward her competitor. The skaters were competing at the Milano Ice Skating Arena.

After Kaori competed, she broke down after learning American competitor Alysa Liu won the gold medal. When Amber noticed her fellow skater breaking down, she quickly went over to protect her from the prying press. In the process, she kept the cameraman from capturing her emotional state, which was shown on a video a fan posted on TikTok.

When the video went viral, fans gave Amber kudos for being a good sport. She responded, “Dude I know it’s their job but they will get all up in your business even when you clearly need space,” she wrote, adding, “It’s wild.”

Following her silver medal win, Kaori told reporters, “I was aiming for the gold medal. The frustration of not being able to win it is really hitting me right now. I thought I might be able to finish with a smile, but instead I’m ending it with this sense of frustration. Still, I think feeling this way will be important for the rest of my life.”

Amber could relate to Kaori’s emotions, as her Thursday performance elevated her from thirteenth place to fifth place. Her Tuesday program received a lower score after she missed a triple loop jump. However, in Thursday’s free skate, she scored a high 147.52. This put her in first place for much of that competition. Upon completing her program, Amber pumped her fist in the air, saying to the camera, “Thank you for staying with me, believing in me,” she told the camera. “I love you, and I’m gonna keep saying what I need to say.”

Amber and her teammates, Alysa and Ilia Malinin, took home gold in the team skating event.
