Donald Trump is thinking of awarding himself a military medal. And not just any medal. Trump wants to give himself the the United States’ highest and most prestigious military decoration for valor in combat. He wants a Congressional Medal of Honor.
On February 19, Trump said he’d already tried to award himself the medal after visiting Iraq during his first term. Fortunately, his advisers talked him out of it.
“I’ve given out so many to guys that are seriously brave,” he said. “I mean, they come in with — the arms are missing, the legs are missing. The stories are so unbelievable.”
Could President Trump award himself the Congressional Medal of Honor?
“It’s a little stretch if I gave myself one of them,” he admitted. “Someday I’m going to try.”
Ironically, though he dreams of receiving the military honor, Trump never served in the military, so he’s not eligible. But he never lets a little thing like rules stop him. In December, he added his name to the John F. Kennedy Performing Arts Center, in violation of federal law.
“I flew to Iraq and was extremely brave,” he bragged. “In fact, so brave I wanted to give myself the Congressional Medal of Honor. I said to my people: am I allowed to give myself the Congressional Medal of Honor?”
Trump actually avoided serving in the military during the Vietnam War. He got his doctor to diagnose him with “bone spurs” to avoid the draft. In fact, no member of Trump’s family has ever served in the military, and he’s known to describe those who serve as “losers.”
Nevertheless, he added, “I’m going to test the law … Let’s give it a shot. Maybe I’ll win in court after everyone sues me.”
Predictably, he later excused his speaking of giving himself the Medal of Honor as him just “having fun.” Members of the military who have lost limbs or family members who have lost loved ones surely weren’t amused.
Later the Veterans of Foreign Wars released a statement. They pushed back on Trump’s comments as “asinine.” They also emphasized that the award is a “sacred” honor, as it represents gallantry and the sacrifice of self, often at the cost of lives. It should not be treated lightly.
