In a recent interview with PEOPLE, Kimberly Van Der Beek revealed that she and her husband, James Van Der Beek, renewed their vows just days before he passed away on February 11. The late Dawson’s Creek star had been battling colorectal cancer since 2023 and was just 48 years old at the time of his death.
“We decided two days beforehand and our friends got us new rings, filled our bedroom with flowers and candles and we renewed our vows from bed,” Kimberly shared. She described the ceremony as “simple and beautiful and moving,” with the couple’s family and closest friends in attendance. One of them was the popular multi-instrumentalist Poranguí, who performed the “most beautiful music” at the ceremony, playing a rendition of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.”
Kimberly announced the death of her husband in an emotional Instagram post on February 11. “Our beloved James David Van Der Beek passed peacefully this morning,” she penned. “He met his final days with courage, faith, and grace. There is much to share regarding his wishes, love for humanity, and the sacredness of time. Those days will come. For now we ask for peaceful privacy as we grieve our loving husband, father, son, brother, and friend,” Kimberly further wrote.
Notably, James Van Der Beek and Kimberly first met in 2009 during a trip to Israel. They tied the knot on August 1, 2010, in an intimate wedding ceremony in Tel Aviv. The couple shares six children, daughters Olivia, Annabel, Gwendolyn, and Emilia, and sons Joshua and Jeremiah.
