It’s a devastating end to what was supposed to be her huge comeback to the sport. Lindsey Vonn suffered yet another crash weeks after her status at the 2026 Winter Olympics was very much up in the air.

At a World Cup downhill event in Switzerland, she suffered what appeared to be a serious crash having to be airlifted to the hospital. Despite the setback, she announced her intention to compete in Milan-Cortina for the Olympics, which officially kicked off on Friday.

She was competing at the Games for the first time since 2018. Unfortunately, her time there ended with yet another smash.

Lindsey Vonn’s highly anticipated Olympic return has ended in devastating fashion. The 2010 Olympic gold medallist fractured her leg after an accident in her first run on Sunday. She was taken to hospital with a broken left leg. Her shoulder clipped the course’s gate, sending her spinning over a jump and helplessly over her skis.

The three-time Olympic medallist could be heard screaming and writhing in pain. She was the 13th person out of the gate in a 36-woman field facing the intimidating 2,572-meter Olympia Delle Tofane course in Italy.

Her crash ends her Olympic dream, something many believe could have happened days earlier. Lindsey’s crash in Switzerland caused the 41-year-old to rupture her ACL, leaving her Olympics status in question. Ahead of the crash, many questioned her motivation to continue given the extent of that injury. She had come out of retirement in 2024.

Last December, she became the oldest person to capture a downhill skiing event at 41 in St. Moritz, Switzerland. That was her 83rd career win on the World Cup circuit and her first since 2018.

Lindsey had been expected to compete in the Super-G and Alpine combined events at the Olympics in Italy. American Breezy Johnson wound up taking the gold, with Germany’s Emma Aicher grabbing silver and Italian Sofia Goggia taking home bronze.

TELL US – SHOULD LINDSEY VONN HAVE COMPETED AT THE OLYMPICS GIVEN HER INJURY LESS THAN TWO WEEKS BEFORE THE GAMES?
