Bad Bunny delivered one of the most-watched TV moments in the world when he took over the Super Bowl LX halftime show in February 2026. The performance was historic, career-defining, and massive in scale. Still, despite months of preparation and global attention, the Puerto Rican superstar won’t earn a traditional performance fee. Here’s the reason why.
Bad Bunny won’t receive a paycheck for Super Bowl halftime show for this reason
As strange as it sounds, the reason is actually pretty simple. The NFL doesn’t cut a big check for halftime performers, said NFL spokesperson Joanna Hunter in 2016. That’s been the rule forever, and it applies to everyone who’s ever been to that stage, from Beyoncé and Rihanna to Kendrick Lamar and Lady Gaga. Instead of a payday, artists get union-scale pay under SAG-AFTRA rules, which comes out to just around $1,000 per day.
Bad Bunny, born Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, was revealed as the Super Bowl LX halftime headliner in September 2025. The Apple Music–backed show will go down at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California, airing live on NBC, Telemundo, and Peacock on February 8. Reacting to the announcement, the singer said in a statement that the moment means more than fame, calling it a celebration of his people, culture, and roots. “It’s for those who came before me and ran countless yards so I could come in and score a touchdown … this is for my people, my culture, and our history,“ he explained.
Even though there’s no appearance fee, the NFL isn’t leaving artists to foot the bill. Big-ticket costs like travel, stage design, tech setup, and crew are all covered. Reuters once pegged the 2020 halftime production at around $13 million. Still, some stars go the extra mile. The Weeknd, for example, reportedly invested $7 million of his own money for his 2021 show.
The artists say yes because of the exposure it brings. After the 2020 halftime show, Shakira’s Spotify streams shot up 230%, while Jennifer Lopez saw a massive 335% boost. Kendrick Lamar felt the same wave in 2025, with reports claiming his album GNX exploded in sales by over 10,000%.
