Ronda Rousey is speaking out against the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), accusing the promotion of underpaying its fighters. The Hall of Famer argued that the low pay has led some athletes to resort to OnlyFans for additional income.
Ronda Rousey slams UFC’s low pay
Ronda Rousey has stated that UFC’s inadequate pay structure is the reason why many fighters are turning to OnlyFans. The MMA champ slammed the organization’s low pay during a press conference on Tuesday, March 10, ahead of her upcoming fight with Gina Carano on May 16.
“It used to be that the UFC was the best place that you could come in combat sports to make a living and be paid fairly. Now, it’s one of the worst places to go,” Rousey stated. “It’s why so many of their top athletes are going to find pay elsewhere. It’s why their champions, like Valentina [Shevchenko], are selling pictures of their ti****s on OnlyFans,” she added.
Rallying for higher pay for the fighters, Rousey continued, “These people, a lot of them at the ground level, they can’t even support their families and are living at poverty-level fighting full-time. This company just got $7.7 billion. There is no reason why they can’t afford to pay their athletes at least a living wage.”
She further added, “They are bleeding talent because of their short-term greed. They are thinking about the next quarter. They are thinking about the shareholders.” Rousey concluded with a pointed remark, saying, “They are not thinking about their responsibility to be stewards of the sport.”
Rousey’s statement came in response to a question about Jon Jones and the allegedly low pay he was offered to fight at the UFC White House Card. Jones and UFC CEO Dana White have since been in a public back-and-forth regarding his status for the event.
