Alysa Liu, the Olympic figure skating champion, made a conscious decision to keep her skating return under wraps. She deliberately kept her dad out of the loop, craving a sense of normalcy and a pressure-free zone in their relationship.
The 20-year-old made a solo decision to return to figure skating in 2024, aiming for the 2026 Winter Olympics. Her dad, Arthur Liu, had previously disagreed with her decision to retire, a memory that lingered as she stepped back onto the ice.
“I didn’t want him to be mad that I was coming back,” Alysa Liu opened up to Rolling Stone in a video interview on March 7. “I just didn’t want him to care, like, at all. It shouldn’t affect him as much as it did the last time.”
She further revealed that her father’s happiness about her return didn’t sway her. Instead, she was almost irritated by it, feeling he didn’t deserve to be happy given his past reaction to her retirement.
Alysa Liu made history at the 2026 Winter Olympics by becoming the first American woman to win a gold medal in figure skating since 2002 and the first to medal since 2006.
However, she has openly spoken about the grueling training she faced as a teen skating prodigy, which led to burnout and drained the fun out of the sport.
“It was so bad. I just didn’t want to remember,” she recalled. “Every day was the same for me. Practice was so serious. I would cry after falling on every jump.
