A new biography detailing the last years of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip’s reign has made claims about the latter’s final moments before his death at the age of 99.
Titled Queen Elizabeth II: A Personal History, historian Hugo Vickers alleged Philip was diagnosed with incurable pancreatic cancer in 2013. The royal apparently continued his public life despite his diagnosis until his retirement in 2017, living with the illness for eight years until he died in 2021. Additionally, the author makes an equally bold claim about Elizabeth’s absence in his final hours before his passing.
The late monarch didn’t get a final goodbye

While the Royal Family has a reputation for upholding the old-school British nobility’s stiff upper lip, the new biography will surprise many by claiming Elizabeth was not present at her husband’s deathbed.
The biography, as obtained by the Daily Mail, claimed Philip’s departure came to represent the pair’s 73-year marriage. The new book alleges Elizabeth asked to be informed “when he was leaving” by her staff. Upon his death in April 2021, the monarch was informed that “His Royal Highness left 20 minutes ago.”
Elizabeth was “absolutely furious,” Hugo wrote. Symbolically, “as so often in life, [Philip] left without saying goodbye.”
Taking place amid the COVID-19 Pandemic, only 30 mourners were permitted at Philip’s funeral. In keeping with his reserved, often hostile personality, the small gathering meshed well with the low-key affair Philip had wanted for his final send-off.
The prince’s cause of death was previously cited as old age, something this new biography disputes. The historian alleges that Philip lived with pancreatic cancer for around eight years before he ultimately succumbed to the illness. This prognosis is far longer than the average for the often-terminal form of cancer. This often-symptomless disease can lead to death within months, weeks, or even days of diagnosis.
