A new royal biography on Prince Philip reveals he suffered with pancreatic cancer for many years. The late Duke of Edinburgh’s cause of death had previously been described as “old age.”

The prince passed away in April 2021 at the age of 99. His wife, Queen Elizabeth, died shortly after in September 2022 at 96 years old.

A royal biography says the cancer was “inoperable”

In the new book, Queen Elizabeth II: A Personal History, historian Hugo Vickers reveals that Prince Philip was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2013. He spent time in the hospital, where it was discovered the disease was inoperable. “Doctors had detected a shadow on his pancreas, and had cut him right across his stomach,”  Hugo wrote. “The verdict was inoperable pancreatic cancer.”

There was speculation that Philip “might not be seen in public again. But, as ever, the Duke outwitted the pessimists,” Hugo wrote. Consequently, he stayed at Sandringham estate’s Wood Farm for a short time, before returning to his royal role in August 2013.

It wasn’t until 2017 that Philip retired from his royal role to live permanently at Wood Farm.

The prince did not want to reach 100 as he “disliked the fuss attendant at such events. On the last night of his life, he gave his nurses the slip, shuffled along the corridor on his Zimmer frame, helped himself to a beer and drank it in the Oak Room,” Hugo writes in the book. “The following morning, he got up, had a bath, said he did not feel well, and quietly slipped away. By this point, he had lived with pancreatic cancer for nearly eight years. Far longer than the usual survival time from diagnosis.”

Unfortunately, the queen was not with Philip at the time he passed. “There had often been times in earlier days when she had asked the staff to let her know when Philip was leaving, only to be told, ‘His Royal Highness left 20 minutes ago,’” Hugo wrote. Elizabeth “was ‘absolutely furious that, as so often in life, [Philip] left without saying goodbye.’”
