The 2026 Winter Olympics began on a rousing high note. Mariah Carey’s performance at the opening ceremonies is getting rave reviews.
In December, the Songbird Supreme was announced as one of the musical acts taking part in kicking off the showcase sports events. The five-octave singer did not disappoint audiences watching live or at home. She was among the big names to perform on Friday. Among the others lending their voices to the occasion were Italian singer Andrea Bocelli and Chinese pianist Lang Lang.
Mariah Carey sang in Italian, impressing Winter Olympics opening ceremony viewers

We already knew Mariah could carry a tune, but she revealed another one of her talents to audiences on Friday. The multiple Grammy Award winner sang the song Nel Blu Dipinto di Blu in Italian. Her diction wowed many along with her heartfelt performance. After that, she went back to English singing the tune Nothing is Impossible from her 2025 album Here for It All.
The crowd at the San Siro appeared to be in a frenzy, thoroughly impressed and enjoying her performance. Back in January, creative director Marco Balich teased that Mariah would potentially perform something in Italian for the big event, and he was right.
Friday may have been her first time performing an Olympic Games officially. That said, Mariah has long been tied to the Olympics in other capacities. Her song 100% was included on Team USA’s official soundtrack for the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver, Canada. The US team finished with 37 medals that year.
Mariah doesn’t just make headlines with her voice, though. In December, people were talking about her butterfly belt, which captured people’s attention while she was in Aspen, Colorado. The Milan-Cortina Olympics run until February 22.
