Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the United States Secretary of Health and Human Services, reportedly underwent shoulder surgery on March 10. According to his spokesperson, he will resume work next week. The news about his medical procedure comes amid the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s dismissal of his autism drug claim.

RFK Jr. undergoes shoulder surgery, claims report

According to NBC News’ latest report, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. underwent shoulder surgery for an injured rotator cuff this week. While he’s currently in recovery mode, which doctors suggest could be “slow and painful,” he is set to resume his duties on Monday. After the surgery, patients are usually allowed to return to activities by wearing a sling and practicing physical therapy.

A rotator cuff is a group of muscles and tendons that support the shoulder joint. It securely keeps the upper arm bone in the shoulder socket, allowing your arms to conveniently move in any direction and rotate. The injury commonly happens to athletes who rely on shoulder strength. However, it can also happen to individuals due to aging issues. As said by Dr. Laith Jazrawi, chief of sports medicine at NYU Langone Health, if one gets an MRI done on anyone above 60, “some degree of rotator cuff pathology” would be detected.

According to Ortho Info, a surgery for the rotator cuff is usually recommended when its symptoms have lasted for 6-12 months. These symptoms include persistent shoulder pain, restricted arm movements, significant weakness in lifting and rotation, and others. It should be noted that it remains unclear which shoulder Robert F. Kennedy Jr. injured his rotator cuff in, as well as what complications or symptoms he experienced.

This news of the shoulder injury comes after RFK Jr.’s claim that leucovorin could be used for treating autism in children, which was recently disapproved by FDA officials. It clearly stated that the drug can be used for cerebral folate transport deficiency, but not autism.
