The Democratic governor’s office seized on the opportunity to highlight Donald Trump‘s well-documented struggles with swollen ankles. Basically, turning a lighthearted fashion observation into a pointed political jab.
The governor’s press office shared a photo on X showing Secretary of State Marco Rubio wearing what appeared to be ill-fitting Florsheim Oxfords on Capitol Hill in January. The shoes showed a noticeable gap at the back of Rubio’s right heel. Gavin Newsom‘s press office wrote on X, “Maybe Trump just assumes everyone else has swollen ankles,” a direct reference to the president’s physical condition.
The comment targeted Trump’s chronic venous insufficiency. It is a common condition among older adults in which leg veins struggle to pump blood back to the heart. At 79, Trump is the oldest person to assume the presidency. Now, his swollen ankles have frequently been photographed bulging over his dress shoes.
According to The Wall Street Journal, Trump has become so enamored with the $145 Florsheim Oxfords that he’s purchased pairs for members of his inner circle. Also expects them to wear them as a show of loyalty. A White House official quipped that people are “afraid not to wear them.”
Trump reportedly keeps a stack of shoes at the White House. The president told the outlet he briefly tried compression socks to help with his condition but stopped because he “didn’t like them.”
Furthermore, the president has begun guessing people’s shoe sizes to their faces, a move Derek Guy, a menswear writer, warned could be problematic. “If you have a suit that doesn’t fit well, you’ll just look bad. But if you have a shoe that doesn’t fit well, you can develop physical issues,” Guy told the Journal.
