According to a report from ESPN reporter Nick Wagoner, the San Francisco 49ers could move on from Brandon Aiyuk when the new NFL league year begins on Wednesday. The team spent about two months trying to find a trade partner for the wide receiver, but reportedly could not secure a deal that made sense. If the release does not happen right away, the move could still come later, possibly with a post–June 1 designation.
The situation marks a surprising shift for a player who once looked like a long-term piece of San Francisco’s offense. Aiyuk, now 27, delivered strong numbers during his first four seasons. He recorded 269 receptions for 3,931 yards and 25 touchdowns during that stretch. His breakout year came in 2023 when he caught 75 passes for 1,342 yards and seven touchdowns in 16 games. That big season helped him secure a four-year, $120 million extension in 2024 (via Newsweek).
Things shifted quickly for Brandon Aiyuk after his strong run with the San Francisco 49ers. The wide receiver tore his ACL and MCL in Week 7 of the 2024 season. The injury sidelined him for the entire 2025 campaign while he focused on recovery. Reports also pointed to some friction between the player and the organization. According to Jeremy Fowler and Dan Graziano of ESPN, the team later voided Aiyuk’s guaranteed money for 2026. The move reportedly came partly because he missed several rehab sessions during the offseason.
If Aiyuk does hit the market, a few teams could jump into the mix. One rumored landing spot is the Washington Commanders. This could reunite him with former college quarterback Jayden Daniels on a short “prove-it” deal.
