The investigation of the shocking assassination of Charlie Kirk has taken a new turn after the defense lawyers of the accused, Tyler Robinson, introduced a fresh perspective in the case. The latter’s legal team has brought up a recent analysis, conducted by a federal agency, which suggests that the bullet recovered during Kirk’s autopsy may not belong to the rifle that ties the 22-year-old to the murder.
Charlie Kirk alleged assassin’s lawyer says bullet doesn’t match the rifle
Recent reports reveal that lawyers representing Tyler Robinson have appealed to the court to postpone a preliminary hearing scheduled for May.
As per The Independent, the defense has requested an extension to thoroughly examine the angle that claims the bullet fragment found in Charlie Kirk’s autopsy wasn’t fired from the rifle recovered from the assassination scene.
The latest court filings submitted by Robinson’s team allude to a report from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF), which failed to conclusively tie the bullet that killed Kirk to the suspected murder weapon. As such, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has initiated a fresh investigation into the matter, with more tests to follow as a result.
Meanwhile, prosecutors making the case against Tyler Robinson in the Charlie Kirk assassination are seeking the death penalty for the accused. They have noted that the DNA found on the rifle’s trigger, the fired cartridge casing, and two unfired cartridges did correspond to Robinson’s.
However, the defense team has argued that the concerned items had multiple people’s DNA on them and has requested a more rigorous forensic analysis. Robinson’s attorneys have also mentioned in their motion that they could try to clear their client’s name from all blame by using the ATF’s analysis in the preliminary hearing itself.
Currently, the next hearing lined up in the Charlie Kirk assassination case will take place on April 17 to address the defense’s motion to ban cameras from the courtroom.
