American forces in the Middle East reportedly could open a large new campaign against Iran. This can come within days of a go-ahead from Donald Trump. Most people briefed on the planning expect any order to come after the midterms.
How US forces are positioned for possible operations against Iran
The two officials told CNN that enough troops and equipment already sit in the region to act “within 96 hours of receiving” an order from Donald Trump. The campaign would look very different from recent months. Since the president ended full combat operations earlier this year, US strikes have hit radars, launchers, and similar assets that Iran can rebuild quickly. The next round would aim much higher.
Central Command and the Pentagon have built a broad target list that includes Iranian energy infrastructure, military sites, and nuclear facilities. The job will not be easy, because Iranian forces now understand US tactics better than before. “It will be a big effort,” one official alleged. A senior Pentagon official gave the outlet a statement: “The Department is a planning organization, and its job is to develop and execute military options ordered by the President.”
Several current and former officials call a strike a question of when, not if. They see a window before the end of the year, most likely after the midterms. Trump has not made a final decision, but he appears to favor major action. Officials add a warning: he has leaned toward military moves before and then backed away at the last moment.
After all, the Strait of Hormuz adds pressure. Adm. Brad Cooper, the CENTCOM commander, flew over the waterway on Sunday and met troops who cleared Iranian mines. The US military still blockades Iranian ports and escorts shipping through the strait. More tankers are passing, yet oil prices stay high, partly because Iran could attack.
One US official called the situation “untenable” for the long term. Without a diplomatic breakthrough, that could push Trump toward force. Additionally, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has lobbied for new strikes on Iran.
