The identity of the celebrity remains undisclosed, but the incident left an impression. She described exchanging a quick, knowing glance with Hudson, a silent “did that just happen?” moment. For Kaling, that brief interaction was enough to spark a thought that she wanted to be “friends with her.”
Kaling revealed that she eventually created a project, Running Point, that allowed her to work alongside Hudson. Through that collaboration, Kaling says she gained a deeper appreciation for Hudson’s range and approach to her craft. While Hudson has long been known for her comedic roles, Kaling said working with her revealed a more nuanced understanding of her talent. “I always knew she was funny, but I learned her timing comes from a place of humility,” Kaling noted. But it didn’t stop there.
Kaling also highlighted Hudson’s strength as a dramatic performer and noted her musical abilities, evident in projects like Song Sung Blue. She described Hudson as someone who effortlessly embodies confidence while continuously redefining her image rather than settling on a single version of herself. That willingness to experiment and follow instinct, Kaling suggested, is what makes Hudson stand out. “She keeps making it look like a very good idea to trust your instincts and go where the fun is. And somehow, she makes it all look easy, which is the hardest thing in the world,” Kaling said.
