Actor Billy Bob Thornton has opened up about his divorce with Angelina Jolie and why their marriage fell apart. In an interview with Rolling Stone, the 70-year-old star of “The Landman” on Paramount+ that had its season two premiere on November 16 reminisced about the multiple marriages he had throughout his life. He has been with his sixth wife, Connie Angland, for nearly two decades, with the pair marrying in 2014. The actor was married to Jolie from 2000 to 2003.
Thornton and Jolie had “different lifestyles”
Thornton told Rolling Stone that he still remembers his time with Jolie fondly.
“That was one of the greatest times of my life,” he said. “She and I are still very, very close friends. And that was the one that ended up being a really civilized breakup.”
On the reason behind their divorce, Thornton explained, “We simply split up because our lifestyles were so different.”
The actor has gone into further detail about what he means by them having different lifestyles. On a podcast with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) in 2018, he went into more depth about the mismatch between him and Jolie that became more apparent as their marriage went on.
“I remember our time together has really been great,” he said. “We just had different lifestyles. Hers is a global lifestyle and mine is an agoraphobic lifestyle. So that’s really, that’s the only reason we’re probably not still together.”
Agoraphobia is an anxiety disorder where a person fears or avoids places and situations that can cause them to feel panic or be trapped or embarrassed.
In 2002, Jolie was a Goodwill Ambassador for the United States and visited refugee tour camps in Kenya. The pair visited an orphanage in Cambodia where they had a brought a boy named Maddox to live in Thornton’s home in the States. It was learned later that Jolie had filed the adoption for the boy on her own, with the couple breaking up several months later.
Thornton also debunked rumors that he and Jolie shared blood vials.
